Yesterday you got the MFT Listen Local weekly music roundup. If you don't see it in your inbox, be sure to visit our website and get on the mailing list.
Our team had a meeting yesterday and there are some exciting things in the mix. Stay tuned!
My buddy (and maybe yours as well!) John P. Strohm writes a great music industry Substack, "Ready For Nothing". It's one of my go-to reads, I highly recommend checking it out. This week he covered Musical Family Tree aka MFT, a music nonprofit I founded 20 years ago, and the upcoming festival we have planned for October. First, a little background...
John and I go back to 90s Bloomington, IN. I was an IU student skipping class to play music and John was exploring new directions after his post-Blake Babies band Antenna wrapped up their run. I looked up to him and he seemed to take a shine to me. Our friendship has weaved its way through many seasons and changes. As an attorney and record label president, John has stayed active in the music business. And he is still releasing music including his excellent solo album "Something To Look Forward To" last year. John is a great heart and head kind of guy.
As MFT gets ready to celebrate our 20th anniversary in October, I am looking forward to reconnecting with my Bloomington music family including John who will be playing the 20th festival along with over a dozen other bands. Many of the bands will be playing their first show in decades. I'm sure I'll get on stage a time or two myself.
I'm really happy MFT exists. I listen to the music archive all the time. There are over 1000 artists/bands and over 100k songs. A vast majority of the songs and artists are not available anywhere else. When people ask me about my legacy, my first thought goes to MFT. I struggle with feelings of pride, they make me uncomfortable, but I'm proud to be the founder of MFT.
Thank you John for telling your MFT story and spreading the word.
