School anxiety is normal. 💥However, if you feel your child or teen would benefit from learning a few additional coping skills for the new year, now is the time to start.

The transition back to school can be a stressful period for many students, making mental health support crucial. Addressing anxiety and other mental health concerns early can help prevent long-term issues and ensure a smoother adjustment. By fostering a supportive environment and equipping students with effective coping strategies, we can help them thrive both academically and emotionally.

Exciting news! We are expanding our groups to provide support for our Parents/Guardians this September.

We know that although we are the therapists, parents are the experts when it comes to their children. To assist our parents, we take their expertise and rework it into something that parents can use to feel more connected to their children. And what this looks like might vary for each child...

With summer here, kids may have more time to spend on screens. Here are a couple of ways to help combat overuse.

Discuss the use of technology openly. Designate device-free zones/times to encourage intentional time spent together. Ensure you are a role model for your kids and mindful of how you use technology.

Have a safe and Happy 4th!

Some people don’t find traditional meditation helpful, but the time spent in your creative state can be extremely mindful. You might find it’s reassuring to have time set aside to just create instead of thinking all the time. Even if you don’t consider yourself an artist, you can express your creativity. You might find something that surprises you! Art is a fantastic tool for self-expression and self-discovery. Art can help bring what you’re going through to light. It makes the invisible (your emotions) visible (art).

The 4th of July is wonderful, but it can be challenging for highly sensitive kids who struggle with loud or unexpected noises, crowds, and flashes of light.

‌To help in these stressful situations parents should explain beforehand to the child what to expect. Parents also may provide solutions such as:

Headphones to help drown out the noise.
Bring fidgets, stuffed animals, and other tools for comfort and security.
Try counting, deep breaths, allowing the child not to attend or be distracted.

‌It is important to remember that fears are normal. Parents and guardians are their safe space. So keeping the child close during or before fireworks or stressful activities is important to prevent another layer of fear.

Reach out to learn more about how we can help provide you and your child with coping mechanisms during the holidays.

It means learning to self regulate your emotional responses, rather than letting your emotions take control of your behavior. When you have time to feel and process your feelings, you can show up for your teen without projecting your fears, shames, or concerns onto them–and really get into what they're asking for or telling you.

Remember, it’s also not about being perfect. No parent is ever going to be perfect! But your child will see the difference if you are mindfully trying to pay attention and respond to how they’re feeling, and if you make the effort to be a safe place for them to turn to in times of trouble. You might not get it right every time, but creating an environment where these things are prioritized is enough to help your child develop secure attachments.

Never underestimate the power of a book.

At The Center for Family Empowerment (CFE), it is our goal to create a safe space for your child to navigate their big emotions. Our therapists use these Inside Out books as a way to introduce children to emotions. Using a familiar theme lightens the mood and encourages kids to learn, work, and want to come back. This is especially true for younger children, Strong Kids groups, and Strong Girls groups.

When these components are met, and children know their caregivers will be both physically and emotionally available and responsive to them, secure attachments are able to form.

06/24/2024

Last Thursday, we sponsored an event at the Hiway Theater showcasing the movie Inside Out 2. It was a wonderful experience and a great day had by all!

A special thank you to The Hiway Theater for partnering with us and providing the use of their space! They were fantastic hosts and we look forward to future ventures. We would also like to thank the community, clients, friends, and family who attended. Stay tuned for more community events! Great things are happening at CFE!

We know how hard it is to struggle and wonder if things will ever improve. We have dedicated our lives to helping children, teens, parents, and individuals feel more connected, feel more empowered, and find their light - the light that makes them shine as the amazing person they are.
We also know how hard it is to reach out and ask for help. Schedules are busy, commitments take over, and therapy can feel like just one more thing. We promise to do everything we can to make this journey as stress-free as possible.
Having hope that things can get better is one of the biggest reasons why therapy is successful. If you or your child are feeling hopeless, we will carry the hope until you can do it on your own.
We know that things can get better, and we're so glad you're here.
