ETSU to host ‘Upper East Tennessee Domestic Violence and Sexual Assault Summit’
JOHNSON CITY – East Tennessee State University’s second annual “Upper East Tennessee Domestic Violence and Sexual Assault Summit” conference will be held Wednesday, October 9, 2024 at the Carnegie Hotel.
The conference aims to train and educate members of the community in the prevention of and response to sexual assault and in advocacy and treatment for victims. It is intended as an initial effort to eliminate misconceptions and create an environment in which victims/survivors will be better cared for.
“This conference began to further the conversations that would benefit both new and experienced domestic and sexual violence advocates, professionals and activists on the front lines of violence prevention and survivor services,” says Ruth Taylor Read, Program Manager for the Office of Professional Development at ETSU. “Amplifying voices that have been historically silenced around domestic and sexual violence is key to survivor-centered advocacy and program capacity building for resources for victims and survivors.”
Conference speakers include Tennessee Coalition to End Domestic & Sexual Violence, Legal Aid of East Tennessee, ETSU Dr. Patricia Robertson Pride Center, Quillen College of Medicine and more. Featured will be narratives from sexual assault and domestic violence victims and survivors and art from renowned soft sculpture artist, Melissa Vandenberg.
The registration fee of $89 ($55 for students) includes breakfast, lunch and breaks. CEUs will be offered. ETSU employees may use their employee audit benefit to pay for registration.
For registration or more information, call the Office of Professional Development at 1-800-222-3878 or visit www.etsu.edu/coe/professional-development
For disability accommodations, call the ETSU Office of Disability Services at 423-439-8346.

Last year, the Tennessee General Assembly created a unique support for aspiring educators called the Tennessee Future Teacher Scholarship. This financial support program offers qualified college juniors and seniors the equivalent of public university tuition and required fees in exchange for the student committing to teach in a high needs subject area and/or distressed county in the Volunteer State for four years after graduation.
TACTE believes strongly in the power and promise of this scholarship program, and we would ask member Deans to please send an e-mail message to your qualified candidates encouraging them to apply for the Future Teacher Scholarship by the September 1st deadline. Suggested language for this correspondence can be found in the “tool kit.”

Launched in 2019 in honor of the late Dr. Chris Dula, a well-known and beloved faculty member, the inaugural Dula Day of Service was created in tribute to Dula's dedication to the university and his passion for community service. In its first year, the Dula Day of Service offered students, faculty, staff, and community members the opportunity to give back to the region through direct, hands-on service. This annual ETSU tradition, now known simply as "Dula Day," has expanded to include not only opportunities for service and volunteerism, but music, celebration, and education in the heart of ETSU's campus.

When Matthew Kinsler came to East Tennessee State University, he could easily answer the question so many college students are asked: What do you want to study?
The “what” was simple for Matthew. Since he was in second grade, he knew he wanted to be a math teacher.
However, a mentor helped the ETSU junior realize the importance of another part of the equation to make the most of his college experience.
“My mentor, Timothy Lewis, told me that finding your ‘why’ is the most important thing you can do,” Matthew said. “I discovered that I enjoyed building up the connections around me, and that the people are part of my ‘why’ and my experience here at ETSU.”
Finding his ‘why’ at ETSU As a POLO intern and Expedition leader, junior Matthew Kinsler helps new students discover their place at ETSU.
