2020 Fire Prevention Month kicks off this week!
"Serve Up Fire Safety in the Kitchen"
National Fire Prevention Week is October 4- 10, 2020. Alaska extends the week to include the entire month of October.
Capital City Fire Rescue would like to remind everyone that cooking activities are the leading cause of home fires and home fire related injuries. Life gets busy, and the demand to multi task has never been greater. However, when we multi task there is a greater chance to forget what we are doing. Unattended cooking is never a good idea.
Cooking is a very necessary task in our life. It provides fun, relaxation and time to bring family and friends together. Cooking can also bring devastating concequences if left unattended, even for just a minute or two.
Here are some helpfyl tips about home cooking:
1) Before you turn on your stovetop, be sure that all combustible materials like plastic bags, dish towels, boxes are all removed away from the surface to help avoid ignition.
2) Use a kitchen timer to help remind you that you are cooking so if you get distracted, the alarm will bring you back to the kitchen. Don't have a timer? No problem, take a large wooden spoon or spatula and put it in you pocket. This will also help remind you when you sit down that you have food on the stove.
3) Frying food is the greatest risk for a home cooking fire. If the spattering of grease or oil ignites, be sure to use a lid or metal cookie sheet to cover the pan. NEVER use water! This will have a violent reaction and only make the situation much worse!
Captial City Fire Rescue wants you and your family to enjoy cooking safely. Please do not leave food unattended on a stove!
