The survey is part of a needs assessment project titled Voices of Pride, and will result in current, actionable data that can inform changes in the local community.

LGBTQIA+ mentors offer support around identity development, academics, coming out and campus and community engagement. The mentor program pairs LGBTQIA+ graduate and professional students with other LGBTQIA+ students. Mentoring relationships are active during the academic year, from August to May.
Mentors and mentees meet with the coordinator for a brief intake interview to help with pairing. Matches are made based on similar identities, experiences and interests.

Dominique Lucious, a 26-year-old Black transgender woman, was shot and killed on April 8, 2021 in Springfield, Missouri. According to her Facebook account, Dominique was a fan of the TV show “Empire.” On social media, many of Dominique’s friends expressed their love for her and how much she will be missed. We have tragically lost at least 45 TGNC people to violence in 2021. TGNC people experience disproportionate rates of violence and harassment in every setting, with the highest rates experienced by TGNC people of color and transfeminine people.
•35% reported harassment and bullying, 5% physical assault, and 2% sexual assault in college settings
•19% reported domestic violence occurring because of TGNC identity
•22% reported police harassment; much higher rates reported by TGNC people of color
•28% experienced harassment and 2% experienced violence in healthcare
•90% reported harassment or mistreatment at work

Thursday, November 18 at 4-5:30pm, University Playhouse (Inclement weather location: Jazzman's Coffee Shop)
Honor and remember the lives lost over the last year due to anti-transgender violence at our annual candlelight vigil. Participants will be invited to walk to Jazzman's Coffee Shop with us afterward for light refreshments and resources. In collaboration with the UMKC Women's Center.
