Transformation of the Primitive Hut Exhibit by the Architectural Exploration Program
Currently On Display
CAED Z Gallery (Mezzanine Level)

Transformation of the Primitive Hut is a concept that explores the origins of architecture and its practice. The concept explores the anthropological relationship between human and the natural environment as the fundamental basis for the making of architecture. The idea of The Primitive Hut deals with the ideal architectural form embodies what is natural and intrinsic. Laugier states that architecture’s true founding principles are demonstrated in what has become known as “the primitive hut,” created by the world’s first architect. Laugier’s book goes on to outline what he describes as the six general principles of essential architecture: column, entablature, pediment, building story, windows, and doors.

Transformation of the Primitive Hut is a design process of transforming through making of architecture. Transformative learning occurs when there is a modification or alteration of beliefs or attitudes and a change of perspective of the designer. Only in this state of mind, a new form of architecture can be explored through the investigation of the discipline of making.

Printed Matter, CAED Faculty Exhibition
On display Aug. 19 - Sept. 6 in the Armstrong Gallery.

"Printed Matter," showcases the largest collection of CAED faculty-authored publications in one space, highlighting the depth of our faculty's writing, research, and creativity across various disciplines. It covers themes ranging from modern architecture in Spain, urbanization around the Great Lakes, and the impact of technology mediation on spatial design. Located in our college's most communal space, the exhibition is like a pop-up blocker for our attention, inviting viewers to become readers. "Matter" refers to both the substantive topics discussed and the tangibility of print media, encouraging exploration of the interdisciplinary discourses propelling our thriving college.

Support for this exhibition is generously provided by the College of Architecture and Environmental Design at Kent State University.

Last week Cleveland Urban Design Collaborative Senior Urban Designer Elizabeth Ellis sat on local Ideastream Sound of Ideas Community tour to talk about the past and future of Akron's Innerbelt. The public event invited local experts and those historically displaced by the Akron Innerbelt project to share about their own connection to the now vacant 30-acre piece of highway. This event comes before a new City of Akron 15-month planning process for what to do with the space. High School Parents! Do you have a student interested in Architecture? The Kent State University's CAED is offering a summer high school program for students to experience Architecture firsthand – gaining valuable knowledge of the field while exploring their creativity.

The Architectural Exploration Program (AEP) was developed to introduce college level design education for high school students. The intensive two-week program offers rigorous individual instruction by CAED faculty. The explorations developed during the summer provide individual students with high quality design projects.

The focus of the program is the Design Studio experience that challenges high school education and responds to creativity investigation into studio culture for passion in design discipline. The program constructs confidence and imaginative aspirations that transform each student’s understanding of the built environment. During the two-week course the student will learn to draw and model their ideas through the intellectual process of making.

The studio will take field trips to some of the best museums and historic sites in the city and explore the dynamic art and design scenes of Cleveland and Akron: Award-winning architecture firms, Cleveland Art Museum, Contemporary Art Museum of Cleveland, and the Akron Art Museum.

Students from our Integrated Design Studio and their families were invited to attend a reception and awards ceremony as the culmination of the spring course.

This studio investigated the relationship between architecture’s various modes of performance. These included material assemblies, structural design, environmental systems, and less technical issues such as compositional systems and aesthetics. Particular focus was given to the physical integration of components and systems, visual integration of materials into the composition of the built work, and performance integration of shared functions. The outcome were students using a more holistic approach to building design by integrating technical systems with aesthetics and ecological performance.
