Natalie Pilsbury ’07, M.P.A. ’23, came to Kent State as a first-generation biology student, but soon found her true passion – journalism. After graduating, she joined AmeriCorps VISTA in Chicago, sparking her love for nonprofit work. A lifelong fan of NPR and PBS, Natalie recognizes the value of public media, and as the new CEO of PBS Western Reserve, she is driving the strategic vision for the station, building community connections and exploring new opportunities for the future! Ina Black, ’24, landed her dream job, a role in the first North American tour of the musical “Back to the Future” during her final semester at Kent State. Dance has always been a part of Black’s life, as she grew up studying ballet and seeing Broadway tours with her mother at a young age. Now, she’s excited to experience a full-circle moment by being a part of the Broadway scene herself. From double majoring at Kent State to serving as vice chancellor at CU Boulder, D’Andra Mull, ’02, M.A., Ph.D., and her career showcase the impact of mentorship and dedication. A pivotal talk with Nancy Scott, Ph.D., shifted her path from law to student affairs, leading to a 20+ year career in higher education. As a Ronald E. McNair Scholar and active student leader, D’Andra’s experiences at Kent State prepared her for her role today. Alumnus Pacifique Niyonzima, M.Ed. ’19, is creating new opportunities for students through a partnership between Kent State and his home country, Rwanda. During his internship with the vice chancellor of the University of Rwanda, he envisioned a collaboration with Kent State’s Office of Global Education. Asher Haddock, ’96, was a softball student-athlete during his time at Kent State and then channeled his passion for the sport as a coach at Northern Kentucky University. After two years, he switched gears to pursue a degree in law enforcement. He graduated from the Kentucky Department of Criminal Justice in 2007 and is now acting as the diversity liaison for the Henderson Police Department in Nevada.
In 2018, Asher transitioned with the support of his partner, department, coworkers and city. He worked with the human resources department to help create new policies and guidelines for trans/nonbinary employees. Asher shows his passion through teaching an LGBTQ+ for Law Enforcement course to the new academy recruits and other officers across the valley. He is also a generous supporter of the Kent State LGBTQ+ Center. “I firmly believe that diversity is having a seat at the table, equality is sharing your voice at that table and inclusion is having that voice heard!”
