SMS Tip of the Week ...

It may only be the start of the semester, but your computer could still be slowing you down. There's an easy way to find out what is taking up the most space on your computer. On a Windows computer, open the Settings app and navigate to System > Storage. After the computer combs through your data you can click on folders like "Installed Apps" or "Other" and delete what you don't want. On a Mac, open your System Settings app then navigate to General > Storage. It will list which parts of your computer data is taking up the most space (like "Applications" or "Messages"). Click on the "i" icon next to one of the top space hogs and then you can pick and choose what you would like to delete.

An exciting new service is taking up residency in the SMS this year - the Adobe Creative Commons! An initiative led by Information Technology at Kent State University and in partnership with Kent State University Libraries, this tutoring and Adobe information corner will be a valuable resource for students, faculty and staff! Stop by this Thursday morning at 10 a.m. for a ribbon cutting and light refreshments to celebrate the opening.

SMS Tip of the Week ...

Did you know that you can print in the University Library from your own personal laptop? To do so, log into the Flashprint website (https://flashprint.kent.edu/myprintcenter/) using your Kent State Flashline credentials. Then click on the "Upload" button in the top corner and locate the file on your computer. (Note, the file must be in a common format, such as Word, Excel, PDF, JPG and PNG.) Choose printing options such as color vs b&w, quantity, etc. Then approach one of the public printers and swipe your Kent State ID to pull up your queue and send the file. This Flashprint site should work in other public labs across campus as well!

If you want to watch a YouTube video without interruptions try this quick hack. In the address bar, add a dash "-" symbol between the "T" and "U" in YouTube (like "yout-ube"). Then hit enter on your keyboard. the video will likely open in full screen view and should play without ads. Give it a try!

SMS Tip of the Week ...

Did you know that there's an easy way to show photos from your phone on your Smart TV without needing special cables? Try using Screen Mirroring! First, make sure that screen casting is enabled in your phone settings (possibly under Display on Android and AirPlay on iPhone). Next, check that your phone and TV are on the same wireless network. Then from your phone's homescreen swipe down from the top to bring up your control center. Look for the mirroring, AirPlay or similar tool and press on it to locate and select the TV. It may require a few more clicks or checks on your TV to enable or connect, but if you can get it to work you should be able to share your screen!

You just got back from a trip with friends or family and you’re looking for a way to share photos between all of you. Unfortunately, some are on Androids and others on iPhone. What to do? Try Google Photos! With this free app/web tool and a free Google account you can easily upload photos directly from your device. You can also create albums that are shareable. And the best part is that with the right settings others can upload to your album too!

SMS Tip of the Week ...

Do you ever find yourself having a conversation with someone and then some time later discover related ads popping up on Facebook or elsewhere on your phone? You're not crazy ... your phone IS listening to you! To turn this off, go to the Privacy / Security section of your settings app. On an iPhone, click on the Microphone option then turn off all of the apps that you do not want listening to you. (On an Android it's under Privacy > Privacy Controls). Within your settings you can also choose to turn off the App Tracking feature and personalized ads (Privacy > Advanced > Ads on Android. And on iPhone it's Privacy & Security > Apple Advertising).

SMS Tip of the Week ...

If you're hoping to snap photos of fireworks with your phone and can stabilize it with a tripod or propping it carefully for the long exposures, great! If not, think of not just photographing the fireworks themselves, but rather a bigger scene (landscape, crowd of people) with the fireworks appearing in the background. You will still need to try and keep the phone somewhat propped and and still as possible. But this way you can at least have better control over getting the scene in focus and established and then the fireworks helping light the view! It also can make for more interesting photos instead of just straight sky shots. Just make sure that your phone is set for night scenes and that Live Photos is enabled if you're on an iPhone.

Having trouble sharing photos between your iPhone and friends or family with Androids? Check your iPhone settings! In your Settings app click on the Camera section and "Format". Choose "Most Compatible". This SHOULD share your photos in a JPG format which is most universal. But if the issue is in the number of photos that you're trying to share, you might want to use an online cloud storage platform instead of texting. Try using Google Drive or Google Photos! You can upload a large quantity and share all at once!

Here's another of many examples of how AI can collab with you to make your project better. the AI tools in Adobe Premiere Pro can be used to enhance speech in a video. You can start by selecting an audio clip that has speaking in it, then open your Essential Sound panel then and tag the clip as "Dialogue". Then press Enhance to have AI start analyzing the audio and making the voice clearer! For full details visit Creative Cloud's tutorial.
