Kent State recently marked a milestone with the ninth commencement ceremony of its American Academy program in Brazil.

The dual-enrollment initiative, launched in July 2018, is a collaboration between Kent State and the Pontifical Catholic University of Paraná (PUCPR) in Curitiba, Paraná, Brazil. The American Academy offers Brazilian students a chance to complete their first two years of undergraduate study at the PUCPR campus while taking Kent State classes taught in English by Kent State faculty. Students earn credit from both universities simultaneously.

A classroom assignment at Kent State sparked a successful business venture for former Golden Flashes football star Will Matthews.

Matthews, who helped Kent State win its first bowl game in 2019, turned his entrepreneurial studies project into reality with the Southern Comfort Kitchen food truck in 2019. The business has since expanded to include a brick-and-mortar restaurant in Akron's Highland Square, which opened two years ago.

Kent State and Notre Dame College joined forces through a Teach-Out program to streamline the transfer process and create a seamless pathway to higher education.

This partnership promises to open doors for Notre Dame College students seeking to further their academic pursuits and achieve their career goals. When Notre Dame College announced in March 2024 that it would be closing for financial reasons, biology major Jakob Arnold found the doors at Kent State to be wide open and welcoming, and an accessible transfer process followed.

“Kent State has a big, diverse population of people which is one of the reasons why I chose Kent State,” Arnold said. “It will be a great place to immerse myself in different cultures. I like to step out of my comfort zone and meet new people.”

Construction continues on Crawford Hall, the new home of Kent State’s Ambassador Crawford College of Business and Entrepreneurship, in anticipation of welcoming students for Fall Semester 2024.

The Kent State University Museum celebrated the opening of two new fashion collection exhibits, one of which honors the Kent State School of Fashion’s founders and another the style of Hollywood legend Katharine Hepburn. During the celebration, retiring museum director Sarah Rogers was honored, and incoming director Sarah Spinner Liska, Ph.D., was introduced.

Director Alison Caplan and several student workers led Buttigieg, Sykes and Kent State President Todd Diacon on a tour, providing moving anecdotes and historical insights surrounding the tragic events. Buttigieg stopped at memorials in the parking lot marking the places where students were killed on May 4, 1970, when the Ohio National Guard opened fire on students protesting the expansion of the Vietnam War, killing four and wounding nine. Speaking out against government corruption and ethnic killings in his home country of Ethiopia made Medhin Dollebo, Ph.D., the target of constant threats and harassment.

Through the efforts of the Scholars at Risk Network and Kent State University, Dollebo is now spending a year as a scholar in residence at Kent State, performing research into his area of specialty, governance and development management and offering lectures at the university.
