The LoudSpeaker Store

Continuing the tradition of HiFi excellence started by Ray Johnston in 1947. We repair speakers. From tiny tears in the cone to full tear-down restorations.

We also hand-build a variety of original and replacement woofers, mid-bass and midranges utilizing salvaged motors and frames whenever possible. Additionally, we design and hand-build custom loudspeakers of all sizes and finishes.

For Sale: ADS L780/2 speakers $395/pair OBO

Repairing these speakers felt similar to a rescuing an abused animal. The previous owner brought them to us with the woofers pretty much incinerated, we rebuilt them using aftermarket cones but managed to get them dialed into spec. Days later the customer called to inform us that they woofers had once again ceased functioning. Our warranty covers "defects", not abuse, accidental or otherwise. We try to be fair, so we told the customer "if the coils are clean and shiny, we fix for free. If they're burnt, sheared or bent, YOU get to pay for repairs". Well, you can see for yourself how that worked out. Once repairs were completed, the owner informed us he would be unable to pay for repairs, and so they are being sold.

We re-coned the woofers again and also replaced two caps that had bulges. They now sound like they are supposed to sound, one of the very best compact speakers of its time. They are in 9/10 operational condition.

Cosmetically, they show signs of abuse and neglect and have a few deep scratches and a small area on the rear/side of what appears to be overspray from white spray paint which is not visible from across the room. We applied some finish restorer and they are now at least presentable. Cosmetic rating is at 6/10.

This is a very highly regarded speaker that goes for prices in excess of $600 when in better (8+/10) cosmetic condition. They are priced appropriately for their condition.

Asking $395/pair (the work done bills out at $275), these are ready to play and enjoy. Cash only, local pickup only. No shipping, no exceptions. The work done is covered under our 90 day warranty against defects in parts and workmanship, but are otherwise sold as-is. All sales final.

For Sale: Pioneer VSX 2012/2>1 HDMI switcher $150/both OBO

This is a clone of the Pioneer Elite VSX-45TX. It's got Dolby Digital, THX, DTS and such, not up to date with Atmos. It performed admirably for a long time but was replaced recently to accommodate the new Epson projector and updated surround in my Music Room. Would make a perfect receiver in a second room or an exceptional surround system on a really low budget. I am including the HDMI switcher which also has an optical digital output.

Asking $150/both, no remote included. Cash only, local pickup only. No shipping, no exceptions. It works beautifully, no warranty, as-is. All sales final.

For Sale: JBL 4425 Studio Monitors $1950/pair

A pair of actual JBL studio monitors clad in dark walnut veneer. These babies will give it to you loud and with great precision, they hide no details. Bass is tight and defined, mids and highs are reproduced through one of the most distinctive horns in the business without harshness or grit.

The woofers have been re-built using factory cones and voice coils, the cabinets have been refinished and the grills re-covered.

Asking $1950/pair (the work done bills out at $450), these are ready to play and enjoy. Cash only, local pickup only. No shipping, no exceptions. Our work is covered under our 90 day warranty against defects in parts and workmanship, but are otherwise sold as-is. All sales final.

For Sale: Nestorovic Labs Type 3 speakers - $1750/pair

A rare opportunity to own some hand-crafted speakers from one of the most coveted brands in audio. Designed and hand-built in Kirkland, WA by Mile Nestorovic in around 1984 just after his departure from Speakerlab, these speakers are somewhat similar to the Speakerlab S30. The woofer section is nearly identical, but the mids are from his later Type 5, and the tweeter is a replacement installed by Nestorovic for the original owner for whom we are selling them.

The woofers were refoamed and tested to meet the exact specs required for the patented woofer system. Nestorovic hand-tuned each pair to match with 1/2 dB. We also replaced all the electrolytic capacitors in the woofer section with brand new parts. These are in 10/10 operating condition. The cabinets consist of a particle board inner cabinet that is clad in 1/2-inch solid walnut rather than veneer. They have been refinished and look fantastic. There are a couple of spots where the outer cladding has warped and gapped, but they have been re-glued and clamped so the gaps are not visible from your prime listening position. Cosmetically, they rate a 8.5/10

Asking $1750/pair (the work done is billed at over $600), these are ready to play and enjoy. Cash preferred, cards and PayPal accepted with a 3% surcharge. Local pickup only. No shipping, no exceptions. Our work is covered by our 90 day warranty against defects in parts and workmanship, but are otherwise sold as-is. All sales final.

For Sale: The Advent/1 $225/pair OBO

Great little speakers, they use the exact same drivers as the Large Advents in a more compact enclosure. Highly appropriate for small rooms, like dorm rooms or smaller apartments. A great way to enter the world of Vintage HiFi without breaking the bank.

The woofers have been re-foamed in our shop, and they are in 10/10 operating condition. Cosmetically they are in great shape for a 40+YO speaker, 8.5/10.

Asking $225/pair (the woofer refoam alone would cost $120), these are ready to play and enjoy. Cash only, local pickup only. No shipping, no exceptions. The foam is covered under our 90 day warranty against defects in parts and workmanship, but are otherwise sold as-is. All sales final.

We will be listing several items for sale in the coming days. Among them a pair of Nestorovic Labs Type 3, a pair of The Advent/1 (same drivers as the Advent Large in a smaller cabinet) and a set of JBL 4425 Studio Monitors. We will also list a set of a/d/s L780/2 (they're getting some refinish work done) and a selection of electronics - Yamaha, Citation and Adcom preamps, Onkyo and Yamaha amps, a couple of dbx units and a few other goodies.

What a year 2023 has been!
We have been blessed to have had our best year ever, we beat last year by a whopping 51.6%! Thank you for your continuing support and for all the referrals - we didn't spend a single dime on advertising, and are already booked for Jan-March, and booking repairs for April 2024.
I also want to give a ginormous shout-out to Sam McCullough who has spent nearly a year as my apprentice. He made a huge difference in our ability to get repairs out in a (somewhat) timely fashion and definitely contributed to our amazing increase over last year. He's 22 YO and has been bitten hard by the HiFi bug - there is hope for the next generation of Hifi and audio enthusiasts. I can't thank him enough.
Stay tuned to see what's next!

Wishing you and yours a very happy and prosperous New Year - may 2024 be full of blessings!

Our RJM Audio Lab SKX-4 crossovers for the Speakerlab K. First two ready to ship!

11/08/2023

Our RJM Audio Lab division's updated/upgraded crossovers for the Speakerlab K.

Update: the new "K" crossovers are coming along.

We decided to redesign the layout and panel, and changed the woofer EQ bypass to a separate output rather than a single output with a switch to activate or bypass the woofer EQ circuit.

The first units should ship next week with more going out soon after.

Edit: the ownwer brought the top grills with today, they make them look like scaled-down Klipschorns. After a fairly lengthy listening session, he declared "no way am I going to sell these!" Guessing he's up late tonight playing music and having a few cold ones.

Just completed repairs to these very interesting early 60's vintage corner horns that seem to have been a home-cooked affair. The bottoms appear to be scaled down trihedral horns of the Klipsch type. The woofer is an Electrovoice 12-inch woofer that had styrofoam cones. They had apparently been inhabited by mice who had eaten most of the surrounds and spiders off the assembly which explains the rattling reported by the owner. They were re-coned with cones similar to what Klipsch uses in their K-24-E 12-inch woofers.

The mids are also home-built and are similar to the radial horns in the early Klipschorns, with an E/V T35 mounted in similar fashion to the earliest 3-way K-horns. The crossovers looked to be copies of the Klipsch Type AA network complete with some old canned capacitors, which we replaced with some Dayton Metalized Poly caps. Despite the use of an autoformer, the mids were almost 10 dB too hot. We added pad resistors to the inputs of the mid and tweeter sections to bring them into relatively flat output.

We hooked them up to our Music Room system and it was immediately evident that they needed some EQ. We measured the in-room response with the AudioTool app (for iPhone and Android, $7.99 at your app store) found that they were rather peaky between 100-200Hz, which was exacerbated by a similar peak in the room and adjusted accordingly. After taming the peak and giving them a 6dB goosing at 40Hz, they sounded very comparable to some early Klipschorns with similar bass extension - anything below 40 Hz falls off a very steep cliff. They definitely have an identifiably "horn" sound, and make it obvious why early HiFi devotees referred to horn mids as "squawkers".

How do they sound? They have a pleasant vintage sound quality that can reproduce any genre, but any decent recording with horns sounds positively awesome. The classic Dean Martin rendition of "Ain't That a Kick in the Head" raised major goosebumps, as did several cuts from Sinatra's legendary "Live at The Sands" with The Count Basie Orchestra. Dire Straits "Money for Nothing" was punchy and lifelike with one of the most realistic sounding reproductions of a snare drum I've ever heard. "Ride Across the River" was realistically dynamic with all the fine details perhaps a bit overly revealed. It's true that some horn speakers tend to rip the clothes off and reveal every naked detail - that is certainly true for these.

The owner is due to take them home tomorrow, but has indicated he may be interested in selling them. Details soon, along with more pictures.

If you love music (for me it's like a food group), you NEED to watch this - "If These Walls Could Sing" - Mary McCartney's (Paul and Linda's daughter) documentary of the history of Abbey Road Studios on Disney+. Many of the musicians, producers and composers who have recorded there, including Paul McCartney and Ringo, Giles Martin, Roger Waters, David Gilmour, John Williams, George Lucas and many more participate. The sound is commensurately excellent and in surround gives you a palpable sense of the rooms there.

From our friend Graham up in Langley, BC:

I have a pair of SPEAKERLAB SEVENS (7WA) for sale.
These are a kit-built pair constructed many years ago by a friend.
I am selling these for his family as he recently passed.
These are a sequential numbered pair purchased from SPEAKERLAB
when they were a big deal in the ‘70s-‘80s..
The colour is not everyone’s choice but they sound wonderful.
A coat of semi-black would make them fit into any environment.

I’m asking $750 (Canadian $, approx. US$560 as of 10.03) for the pair c/w grill frame/cloth.

I live in Langley, BC if you wish an audition, or contact me and we can arrange a FaceTime call/demo.

Graham
The other equipment in the photos have been sold.

For Sale: Infinity Reference Five - PRICE REDUCED - $349/OBO

Another of Infinity's "sleeper" models, a medium sized tower with the same mid/tweeter combo as the Ref Four, but with a 10 Inch woofer. This speaker can dredge out surprisingly deep bass and will fill up a substantial room and are very listenable for extended periods.

Cosmetic condition: 9/10. As with the Ref Fours, they get a 9 due to the previous owner's refoam job on the mids and woofers. Also had to be red-done with the correct foam, which left some light scratches on the outer edge. The grills are nearly perfect.

Functional Condition: 10/10. No flaws in testing. Very easy to listen to with deep punchy bass.

Please reach out though the page, email us at [email protected] or call 206.409.4724 if interested. The work done (woofers refoamed) is covered by our 90-day warranty but are otherwise as-is. Local pick up only, no shipping, no exceptions.

All sales final.

For Sale: Infinity Reference Four - REDUCED PRICE - $249/OBO

This one of the company's "sleeper" models, built for big box stores such as Best Buy, and some now long defunct chains like Circuit City and The Good Guys. These compact towers would be ideal for a smaller room or someone who listens at non-live volume levels. They are a nicely balanced speaker finished in an attractive "genuine woodgrain vinyl veneer".

Cosmetic condition: 9/10. They get a 9 due to the previous owner's refoam job on the mids and woofers. The mids were OK but needed a considerable amount of excess glue removed from the cone. The woofers were refoamed with a generic foam surround that was too stiff, and had to be re-done with the correct foam, which left some light scratches on the outer edge. The grills are nearly perfect.

Functional Condition: 10/10. They sound just like they are engineered to sound, and they sound like a smaller classic Infinity speaker.

Please reach out though the page, email us at [email protected] or call 206.409.4724 if interested. The work done (woofers refoamed) is covered by our 90-day warranty but are otherwise as-is. Local pick up only, no shipping, no exceptions.

Infinity RS6 $195 OBO

These are a very easy speaker to live with. Great sound in a compact cabinet with the classic Infinity oak veneer with oak corner fins.

These are a pair that were brought in with non-Infinity replacement woofers which we have been unable to identify. They sound remarkably good considering. We shot specs in the lab and found that they are actually not far off from the OE woofers. Whoever replaced these either did their homework or got very lucky. The fact that they are not original is reflected in our asking price.

Cosmetic condition: 7.5/10. We gave them a rubout with refinish oil and they look pretty good. They do have a few small dings and scratches but not easily visible. One grill has a small tear in the top corner (see pictures).

Functional condition: 8/10. The mids and tweeters are fine and there is no noise in the level controls. The rating reflects the non OE woofer, but they seem to perform admirably and do not sound "off" in any way.

Please reach out though the page, email [email protected] or call 206.409.4724 if interested. These are offered as-is, for local pick up only, no shipping, no exceptions.

All sales final.

Photos from The LoudSpeaker Store's post 09/26/2023

SOLD.

Infinity RS-4b $550 OBO

These are from the original owner. We re-foamed the woofers with the correct foam, cleaned the level controls and gave the cabinets a much needed rub out with finishing oil.

Cosmetic condition: 9/10. No readily visible flaws, there is one slight dent in one of the rear corners. The grills are perfect.

Operational condition: 10/10. They test perfectly and sound like they should. Besides the new foam, they are all original. The work done is covered by our 90-day warranty against defects in parts and workmanship, but are otherwise sold as-is.

These speakers are a great example of a classic Infinity speaker but in a relatively compact cabinets, which are beautifully finished in oak veneer and the distinctive oak corner fins, and they are in fantastic condition.

We accept cash, cards, Venmo and PayPal. Please contact us through the page, call us at 206.409.4724 or email [email protected] if you have an interest. Please note: offered for local pick up ONLY, no shipping, no exceptions.

All sales final.

Upgrade your Speakerlab Ks!

There has been significant interest in these crossovers. We are happy to announce we will be re-launching limited production of these units, first developed in 2007, the new version has all the refinements and features we've added over the years.

These are designed specifically for the Speakerlab K with the side-mounted tweeters. They can also be used in the Speaker Factory Cornerhorns with 4ohm woofers, Atlas PD-5 mid driver and T-35 tweeters.

See the below post for details and pricing. We have plans to start building these in the last week of September and will build 5 pairs to start. 3 sets are already spoken for.

Of course, feel free to reach out with any questions.

Photos from The LoudSpeaker Store's post 09/13/2023

One of my old custom builds ca. 1990.

That is a JBL 117H 8-inch woofer, a Vifa M10MD mid (one of the best mids ever built, IMO) and an Audax soft dome tweeter. These little boxes do a beautiful job with any type or genre of music. The bass is highly adequate for all music, but it's also an "honest" bass - not boomy or exaggerated. The mids are very natural, the highs are smooth and extended.

I built these for my younger sister as a HS graduation gift and she used them for years. My father-in-law built the cabinets, they are finished in a blue-slate laminate and oak trim (which matched a desk he also built for us). My sister is now using Sonos almost exclusively and no longer has use for them. None of the 9 nieces or nephews are interested, so I would like to sell them.

Price? It's hard to price a unique custom pair like this. They would be ideal for a second home, beach cabin or a starter system for a youngling just getting into HiFi. Let me know if you have an interest and we can figure it out.

EDIT: Looks like they're staying in the family, another sister will be grabbing these along with a turntable. So her kids can play their "vinyls"

Photos from The LoudSpeaker Store's post 09/12/2023

More new arrivals.
These are a fantastic speaker, and in a very manageable smaller tower configuration. The previous owner re-foamed them with kits but didn't get them quite centered in one speaker, and it was the wrong foam. Woofers will get new foam, we'll test them, clean them up and then they'll be for sale.

Photos from The LoudSpeaker Store's post 09/12/2023

They have arrived!

They're going to need some work - new foams on the woofers and some minor cabinet repairs. We will also do a full sand-down refinish.

The owner had Mile do some updates a few years ago, we are waiting to find out specifically what they were, but apparently he replaced the tweeters.

Updates as they become avaiable!

Nestorovic Labs Type 3 Restoration 09/07/2023

Oh boy, oh boy! Just found out we're getting a pair of these beauties in (Nestorovic Labs Type 3) this Saturday, 09.09.23. They will be tested, any needed repairs/updates done then detailed and put up for sale. Don't like to "count our chickens", but last time we had a set for sale it caused a stampede.
These are extraordinarily rare. Similar in many ways to the Speakerlab S30, they have some refinements that elevate them to a higher level: Nestorovic hand-matched them to within 1/2 dB of each other, they have an MDF inner enclosure that is clad in solid 3/4 walnut, and they have a gently sloped front.
Depending on condition, the expected asking price will be between $1250 and $1475/pair.
Pictures of the set for sale (this picture is from a few years back) and an official price will be posted early next week.

Set up in the Music Room for listening and delivery. The best part of this job, and the reward for hours of solder and hot glue fumes!

How TLS Got it’s start

A long time ago in a garage far, far away...

Back in 1999 I went to work at Speakerlab on Roosevelt Way in Seattle for the second time in my career, located between the Ravenna District and Green Lake. This area is home to some of the most liberal folks in the nation - legend has it that there were more votes in the 2000 election for Ralph Nader than any other district the entire country. Having worked for Speakerlab exactly one block north between 1983 and 1985, I can tell you it should have been called the Birkenstock and Granola capital of the planet. After a short and frustrating effort to revive the old and very successful speaker kit line that made Speakerlab famous, I left with the intention of starting The LoudSpeaker Store.

I was 2 weeks away from dropping close to $10K on my website (they cost THAT much in 1999...) when I got a call from my old manager at Magnolia Hi-Fi, Rick Wigen, who was the audio buyer for MHF at the time. He asked if I might be interested in applying for the Sales Rep position that had just opened up with Klipsch, a company my Grandfather had represented in this territory for over 35 years. This was a bucket list job, so I jumped at the opportunity. I got the job. Grandpa Ray was tickled. Although the company he represented was long gone, now owned by a distant cousin of PWK, the company still carried the flame for big, high-sensitivity, horn-loaded speakers and had become one of the starring players in the global audio business. Like so many other companies in the industry, Klipsch was eventually bought up by a large international conglomerate - today the company is a division of Vox International.

Frustrated at the company’s sluggish response to a market that favored smaller speakers, I left in Dec 2002. I was less upset at the end of my employment than I was at having to return my Rep’s samples. My system went from a full Klipsch Reference surround system to a set of Klipsch ProMedia speakers. Great for desktop media but a living room Hi-Fi system they most certainly were NOT.
