Kirkland, WA 98033 MEOW is still staffed almost entirely by volunteers.

Our History
In the early 1990s, a small group of animal-loving friends made a commitment to create a better life for homeless animals. With little more than determination, they started Mercer Island Eastside Orphans and Waifs, now commonly called MEOW Cat Rescue & Adoption, a non-profit organization with a no-holds-barred no-kill philosophy. It’s still all about the animals. Today

MEET SABRINA!

This beautiful girl is a 9-month old domestic short hair Calico. She also has a short little tail. She was rescued from a rural area where there were too many cats, not enough food, no veterinary care. If all of this wasn't enough, they were next to a busy road and the area was full of predators. Whew!

Thankfully, a rescuer stepped in and brought this girl to safety. She spent some time in foster care where she loved other cats, did really well with cat-friendly dogs and enjoyed children and strangers. Her foster mom tells us:

Sabrina has shown to be cat selective and while she has previously inhabited space with other cats (siblings and non-siblings), she can sometimes be a little bossy and headstrong. We would recommend her being adopted as the first cat in the household (with a friend to be potentially added later) or go to a home with a cat that can stand its ground with a high energy young feline with lots of personality.

Sabrina has been spayed, vaccinated, microchipped, dewormed and viral tested. She is ready to go!

MEET BRIOCHE!

This beautiful girl is just as delicious as the dessert that she is named after. Brioche is a domestic short hair brown tabby who is one year old.

Brioche was found in someone's backyard with her baby kittens. Thankfully, they were rescued and placed in a foster home where they were all loved and doted on. Brioche was a loving, patient and attentive mom. Her babies are now weaned and it hs Brioche's time to shine!

Brioche's foster mom describes her:

"Bri is such a good girl! She doesn't mind our dogs at all. She's not always a lap cat, but she does like to get on the couch when she's in the right mood. She follows me around and loves petting."

Brioche has been spayed, vaccinated, microchipped, dewormed and viral tested. She is ready to go!

Several weeks ago, we received a phone call from a woman who'd found a cat that looked to be in "rough shape". The cat wasn't wearing a collar/tags, so she did the right thing - she took the cat to the vet for a microchip scan! Once scanned, it was noted that the microchip had been inserted by MEOW. The woman brought the cat to us.

We were taken aback when we initially met the cat. She was a sweet girl who was geriatric and most likely in failing health. We were so hopeful that we'd be able to contact her adopter and we did! The emotional woman rushed to the shelter to be reunited with her beloved girl. An indoor only cat, she'd gotten out the day before. She was on numerous medications and surely wouldn't have made it much longer without the excellent care she was receiving at home.

The moral of this happy story - microchips work!!

Hardly a day goes by that we don’t receive a phone call from someone whose pet has gone missing. Microchips are one of the most effective tools for reuniting people and lost pets. Equally important is contacting the microchip company if you move or change your phone number. If this isn’t done, the microchip will be rendered useless.

Pet microchipping is one of the most important elements of pet reunification. While microchips have incredible potential for reuniting lost pets with their owners, the chip itself is only one component in a system involving microchips, registries and scanners.

A microchip is a small device about the size of a grain of rice that is quickly and easily implanted beneath your pet’s skin between the shoulder blades. It contains a unique number used to identify your pet. This number links to your contact information in an online registry allowing veterinarians, rescue organizations and clinics to contact you should your lost pet be found. It is important to note that the microchip itself does not store your contact information – it only contains the microchip number.

A microchip is not a GPS or tracking device and will not reveal a lost pet’s location. It is only when a lost pet is found, scanned for the chip and searched in an online registry that someone will be able to contact you. This is why it is critical to keep your contact information current on the online registry. Failure to do so renders the microchip useless.

Microchip scanners are in use at almost all animal shelters and veterinarian offices. It is essential that a “universal scanner” be used in order to read the different chip frequencies distributed by different manufacturers/microchip brands. Not using a universal scanner may miss microchips, making it harder for lost pets to reunite with their families.

If your pet is microchipped and you are unsure of the manufacturer, you can visit the AAHA (American Animal Hospital Association) website at www.petmicrochiplookup.org, type in the microchip number and find out. Your pet’s microchip number will be included in your veterinary paperwork or shelter adoption packet. If you don’t know the microchip number, any vet clinic or animal shelter will do a quick microchip scan for you.

It is a good idea to review microchip information annually to ensure that if a pet is ever lost, it will be returned safely home.

MEET EILEEN, LADY MARMALADE, and PRINCESS PEACH!

These three stunning girls are sisters. They are nine months old.

Eileen - Domestic short hair dilute tortie
Lady Marmalade - Domestic long hair red tabby
Princess Peach - Domestic long hair red tabby

This beautiful litter of kittens were born to a free-roaming cat. They didn't have human interactions until they were a few months old, and are learning that humans can be kind and good. They are guarded, but given time, they relax. We have every reason to believe that when out of the shelter and in a home environment, they will be wonderful pets.

They aren't a fan of being picked up or held as they lack confidence. They do enjoy eating treats out of your hand. They enjoy watching bird TV and looking out the window. They absolutely cannot resist a felt wand toy! They all take great comfort in one another and in our dreams, they would all be adopted together. We know that this may not be possible, but we would really like to see at least two of them be adopted as a pair. They do very well with other cats.

All of these gorgeous girls have been spayed, vaccinated, dewormed, microchipped and viral tested. They are all residing in the "Library" (one of our free roaming rooms) at the shelter and would love to see you.

MEET MR. BIG!

This guy got his name for a good reason - he is big in both stature and personality! Mr. Big is a three year old domestic short hair blue tabby with white. He was rescued as a free roaming cat, who was looking for a better life - and he found it!

Mr. Big is a lot of cat. He wants to be with you ALL THE TIME. He is lovey and purry and a master biscuit maker. He can sometimes become overstimulated and give love chomps, a behavior we have been working on correcting and that he is getting better with. His person/family will have to be sure to watch his non verbal cues carefully. Smart and very food motivated, our staff has also been working on treat training Mr. Big to sit, get off laps, and other simple tricks.

Mr. Big has been neutered, vaccinated, dewormed, microchipped and viral tested. He is FIV+, which we have learned a lot about in recent years. Please read about it below.

What is FIV?
FIV, or Feline Immunodeficiency Virus, has been compared to human HIV/AIDS. Like a person with HIV, a cat can be infected with FIV and enjoy good quality of life for quite some time. There is no cure for FIV, and cats with this disease are vulnerable to a number of secondary infections due to a suppressed immune system, especially if they are allowed outdoors where they are exposed to more things. However, most indoor-only FIV positive cats live normal life spans.

Who gets FIV?
FIV is not contagious to any other species and infected cats do not pose a risk for HIV infection in humans. Although it can affect cats of any age or s*x, this disease is most commonly seen in intact adult male cats.

How is FIV spread?
FIV is not very readily spread. The main route of transmission is through bites, rarely through casual contact, and cats may cohabitate for years without transmitting the disease. However, bites are more likely to occur when a cat is newly introduced into a group. Introduction of an FIV positive cat to a household with FIV negative cats (or vice versa) therefore poses a moderate risk of disease transmission. Individually housed infected cats in a shelter do not pose an infectious risk to the shelter population. Although transmission to kittens at or near the time of birth has been experimentally reported, in nature this appears to be extremely uncommon. Kittens born to FIV positive mothers are at low risk for infection, although they may initially test positive due to the presence of maternal antibodies. FIV is not very durable in the environment. It is inactivated by most commonly used disinfectants. It can survive for up to 48 hours in a moist environment at room temperature.
________________________________________
How is FIV Diagnosed?
Blood tests are available for screening for FIV in-house or at most labs. The most commonly used test is the ELISA test, which looks for viral antibodies in the blood.

How accurate is the test?
The blood test is quite accurate, but false positives and occasionally false negatives do occur. In healthy, low-risk populations FIV is quite uncommon, and this leads to an increase in the relative number of false positive results. The blood test may also falsely identify recently infected cats as negative. To be absolutely certain, cats must be tested 1-3 months after their last known exposure. The test can not be accurately interpreted in young kittens.
There is currently no test available to distinguish between infected cats and cats that have been vaccinated for FIV.

What additional tests are available?
If resources allow, cats testing positive by the ELISA test should be retested by sending the appropriate sample to a laboratory for IFA or western blot analysis. At the very least, the ELISA test should be repeated to ensure that correct technique was used.
________________________________________
What is the prognosis for cats with FIV?
Cats with FIV can live for many years without symptoms. Some infected cats will develop secondary conditions such as oral disease and can be more susceptible to secondary infections, especially if they are allowed outdoors. However, indoor-only cats usually avoid most secondary infection because they are exposed to less. Only a very few FIV positive cats go on to develop full blown AIDS. Most indoor-only, FIV positive cats will live normal life spans, though they may need dental cleaning more often than an FIV negative cat. In general, treatment consists of good nourishment, protection from stress and infectious disease, and management of secondary conditions. There is no cure for FIV infection, though the efficacy of various antiviral agents in treating the disease is an area of active research.
________________________________________
What about vaccination?
There is a vaccine available for FIV, although the efficacy rate of the vaccine has been reported to be 67-84%. FIV vaccinated cats will test positive for FIV on all currently available tests. Therefore, permanent identification of vaccinated cats such as tattooing and/or microchip is vital. Because FIV is not very readily spread, the routine use of FIV vaccination in a shelter is rarely indicated. Rather, the new owner and their veterinarian should decide whether the vaccine is appropriate for the individual circumstances of the cat.

It is estimated that 2% - 25% of the global domestic cat population is infected with the virus. Many shelters across the United States routinely euthanize cats that test positive for FIV after their mandatory holding period. At this time the UC Davis shelter medicine program recommends that only owners of "at risk cats" (indoor/outdoor or outdoor only) consider vaccinating their cats for FIV, and if vaccination is elected, it is imperative that microchipping be performed at the same time. Having the means to quickly identify the owner of a stray cat entering a shelter with a positive FIV status can mean the difference between life and death.

MEET SYLVIE!

Sylvie is a female 10 month old domestic short hair blue and white tux. She is initially shy, but warms up pretty quickly.

Sylvie's foster mom tells us:

"Sylvie really needs another feline friend! She isn't a wild and crazy cat as far as playing, but she desperately wants a friend. She does like to be wheerever her foster mom is too. Loves attention!"

Sylvie has been spayed, microchipped, vaccinated dewormed and viral tested.

MEET FRANK and MARJORIE!

These two sweet cats aren't related, but they have been living together and are very bonded. They will be adopted together. Marjorie is a one year old domestic short hair blue and white tux and Frank is a three year old domestic short hair buff tabby with white.

Marjorie and Frank came from an unhealthy living situation where there were too many cats, not enough food and no veterinary care. Thankfully, a rescuer stepped in and basically saved their life.

These two are super sweet and have a gentle and quiet demeanor. They are spayed/neutered, vaccinated, dewormed, microchipped and viral tested.

MEET MINA!

Two year old Mina recently came to MEOW along with her 1 year old son, Micah, after their previous owner abandoned them when the landlord found out they had too many cats living in their home. While Mina has previously lived with other cats and currently resides in a free roaming room with other friendly felines, we suspect that she might be happiest in a home where she does not need to share attention with other pets. While passive and tolerant in the presence of other kitties, Mina really comes to life when she's the star of the show and can have all the focus on her. Sweet, quiet, and fairly able to keep to herself when required, Mina would be a great kitty for someone looking for a loyal single, adult cat who is low maintenance and very easy going.

Mina is available for immediate adoption and has been spayed, vaccinated, dewormed, viral tested and microchipped. She also comes with a FREE vet exam! She's happily accepting visitors....come on down!
