How much should a breastfed baby eat? Until they’re done!

A few signs that show Baby is done eating:
• Baby releases from the breast.
• Baby turns away from your ni**le.
• Baby relaxes their body and opens their fists.

Milk is very nutritious for anyone, at any age!
• Helps to strengthen bones with potassium, B12, calcium and vitamin D
• Aids in muscle repair with protein

If you don't like the taste of milk or don't want to drink it straight, get creative when working it into your diet. Try adding it into smoothies, oatmeal, soups or in your favorite breakfast cereal. Use your WIC benefits to purchase milk and other dairy products like cheese and yogurt that are rich in protein and calcium. Find out more about healthy foods at wichealth.org!

Pumping breast milk provides food for your little one when you are apart. Keeping the parts of your pump clean is critical because germs can grow quickly in breast milk or breast milk residue that remains on pump parts. Keeping your pump clean can help prevent contamination and protect your baby from infection. Find out more at https://www.cdc.gov/hygiene/pdf/breastpumpkit-clean-508.pdf.

When can baby start solids? Remember, every child’s readiness depends on their own rate of development. Look for the below signs that your baby is developmentally ready and consult with your pediatrician first.
• Sits up alone or with support.
• Controls head and neck.
• Opens mouth when food is offered.
• Swallows food rather than pushes it back out onto the chin.
• Brings objects to the mouth.
• Tries to grasp small objects, such as toys or food.
• Transfers food from the front to the back of the tongue to swallow.

Your baby's first foods are your choice. Whether you decide to make your own baby food or buy premade baby food, you have many options. However, keep the following in mind:
• Foods should be soft or pureed to prevent choking.
• Introduce one, "single-ingredient" new food from any food group every 3 to 5 days. Watch for any reactions.
• Check with your child's doctor about how and when to give peanut products.
• There is no evidence that your baby will develop a dislike for vegetables if fruit is given first.
• Be sure to include foods that provide iron and zinc, such as baby food made with meat or iron-fortified cereals.
