As we continue to monitor Tropical Francine's track, which is showing more of an easterly move, we want to take a moment to share some general rain-related tips that are applicable anytime we are expecting sustained rainfall or periods of heavy rainfall.
-When inclement weather is forecasted, if you can avoid travelling on local roadways, please do so. During periods of heavy rainfall, some areas of water retention can develop on streets. Once the rainfall ceases, the water will recede quickly.
-If you are on the roadway and come across standing water, it's best to not drive through it. Driving through standing water on a roadway puts you at risk and you also risk pushing water into surrounding homes or businesses.
-When rainfall is occurring, please use reduced speeds on roadways and extra caution. Remember, if your windshield wipers are on, then your headlights should be also.
-Ahead of any significant rain or wind event, be sure to pick up and secure any loose items around your property. These items can make their way into the streets and into storm drains and can also become dangerous projectiles in a heavy gust of wind.
As always, monitor our local news outlets and National Weather Service forecasts for the latest. It's always best to delay a trip or plan an alternate route if heavy rains are forecasted to impact our area.
The City of Lake Charles continues to monitor Tropical Storm Francine.
All City facilities, including City Hall, Historic City Hall, Central School and Public Works Administration Building will be closed on Tuesday, September 10 and Wednesday, September 11. All City recreation facilities, Mallard Golf Club and the Lake Charles Event Center will also be closed during this time.
Upon further review of the upcoming forecast, and in order to help with debris management ahead of the storm, trash and garbage routes will run as usual on Tuesday, September 10; weather permitting. Recycling Centers and the Roving Green Recycling Truck will be closed on Tuesday, September 10 and Wednesday, September 11.
Weather permitting, City Transit service will run its normal routes on Tuesday, September 10, but will be closed on Wednesday, September 11.
The City Council Agenda Meeting scheduled for 5:30 p.m. on Tuesday, September 10, is cancelled.
Public safety and other essential personnel will continue to operate as long as conditions allow for them to safely do so.
City officials do request that residents bring in and secure their garbage cans, after they are emptied, and to secure any loose debris or yard items ahead of the approaching tropical system.
Residents in low-lying or flood prone areas or in mobile homes should take the necessary precautions to prepare for Tropical Storm Francine. Residents in need of assistance should dial 211 for information on available resources.

Historic City Hall has an amazing history. Here's are 3 fun facts about our beautiful building!
๐จOur building is on the National Register of Historic Places.
๐จMost of the interior oak woodwork is original.
๐จThe four-faced clock in the bell tower was installed in 1911. It originally operated like a cuckoo clock- a pendulum about 20 feet long took up 2 separate floors and swung back and forth, turning a series of gears and wheels. The clock was fixed to run on electrical power in 1937, and later computerized in 2001.
