Blue Canary Letterpress is owned and operated by second generation printer Jodi Bortz in her hometown of Chestertown, MD.

After winning a 1921 Chandler & Price 10X15 platen press in an auction several years ago, Jodi learned letterpress working with artist and childhood friend Robbi Behr and her husband Matthew Swanson at Haywire Letterpress. When their childrens’ book career took off, Jodi moved the press out of their barn and began Blue Canary Letterpress.

Blue Canary Letterpress specializes in custom creations for special events, businesses, and other art quality print needs. Jodi has been privileged to work with many emerging brands to integrate letterpress branding and packaging into their launch or new product lines. As a fellow entrepreneur, she’s able to understand the challenges of other small business owners and provide support from her experience.

Meet Jodi at the combined 11th Annual Lancaster Printers Fair and 3rd Annual Chesapeake Print & Book Arts Fair on Saturday, September 21, from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Graw Alley in Havre de Grace, MD.

After 23 years on the fourth floor at 55 North Chicopee Street in Chicopee, MA, Letterpress Things was forced to relocate when their lease was not renewed. After auctioning presses and other equipment, and moving fixtures and inventory to short-term warehouse storage, a "build out" in a smaller, more compact and attractive space in Holyoke, MA, began.

John and JoAnn Barrett's intentions are to continue Letterpress Things as a resource to the letterpress community for type, tools, supplies and other letterpress items, functioning as before both online and from a warehouse for distribution and pickup.

Join them at the combined 11th Annual Lancaster Printers Fair and 3rd Annual Chesapeake Print & Book Arts Fair on Saturday, September 21, from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Graw Alley in Havre de Grace, MD, and sample Letterpress Things’ impressive assortment of type, plates, icons, papers as well as various other letterpress things for the working printer.

Kristen Fava, founder & owner of REXMAKE, was introduced to the art of letterpress printing while she pursued a degree in graphic and web design. In an attempt to step away from the computer, Kristen took the opportunity to work with her hands and explore a more tactile approach to design with printmaking. All of her stationery products are created using antique printing equipment. She views each machine as a piece of history and is thankful to have the opportunity to care for every one.

Eric Leland considers himself to be an illustrator with a letterpress print studio. He loves to use the antique machinery in his Baltimore studio to create products inspired by his interests in gardening, travel, architecture, and industrial history, among other sources. After starting his career as an architect, he quickly realized he was happiest when working with pencil and paintbrush and has been creating ever since.

His 2024 Bunny Calendar is inspired by a fall outing to Quebec. Each month features a reproduction of one of his original gouache paintings created just for this calendar. The pages are digitally printed on sturdy card stock, then trimmed and bound by hand. Currently, he is putting the final touches on a 2025 edition sparked by his travels in France and Germany.

Visit Eric Leland’s Manufactory at the combined 11th Annual Lancaster Printers Fair and 3rd Annual Chesapeake Print & Book Arts Fair on Saturday, September 21, from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Graw Alley in Havre de Grace, MD, to check out books and calendars that use his own stories and illustrations and are printed with various letterpress and digital techniques. Boxcar Press is celebrating 25 years of letterpress printing. Owner Harold Kyle started in Minnesota in 1998 and early on moved to Syracuse, New York, where the business has grown and expanded to include foil stamping, engraving, embossing, digital printing and die cutting.

Boxcar Press still strongly supports letterpress printing with its photopolymer platemaking, Boxcar Base and Flurry 100% cotton paper. It is known for helping printers with whatever they need to print, whether they are brand new to letterpress or veterans of putting ink to paper. The team enjoys talking to folks about their projects and their presses, comparing techniques, and admiring the work of the letterpress community as a whole. Boxcar’s motto is to print beautifully and to provide services and supplies to help you do the same. The team also loves giving tours at the Delavan Studios location and appreciates those rare chances to visit other shops. Boxcar finds that the Lancaster fair is a great time to chat up old and new friends, add some prints to its own collection, and score a new pressroom tool or an orphaned letterpress ornament.

Check out Boxcar Press at the 10th Annual Lancaster Printers Fair, September 16, from 11 am to 6 pm, to find multiple printing press-themed t-shirts (iron hand press lovers take note), Boxcar Base, windmill swing away lay gauge, printing inks and more.

Harry Franklin Stauffer founded Conestoga Press 70 years ago in his Farmersville, PA, home, following a long printing career. He began in the print shop of Silas Bard’s Denver Press in 1915 and continued until his 1956 retirement as the printer for Weaver Book Store in Lancaster. Harry was a familiar face at historic and cultural events, where he demonstrated printing to locals and tourists alike. In the 1960’s, he donated much of his printing equipment, including a mid-19th century Ramage/Bronstrup wrought iron hand press, to the Historical Society of the Cocalico Valley. He carried on with much of the Press’ activity from there, while also working on a wooden Ouram press at the Ephrata Cloister, until his death in 1982.

Harry’s print shop at the Historical Society continues as Conestoga Press, operated most Saturday mornings by volunteers Jeff Walgren, Madelyn Marks, Paul Gough, and Randy Newcomer. It is located in the carriage house behind the Victorian mansion on Main Street in Ephrata that serves as a museum of local history.

Find out more about Conestoga Press at the 10th Annual Lancaster Printers Fair on September 16 when volunteers will be on hand from 11 am to 4 pm to share visitor information and examples from the 1850s press.

Keeping the craft alive

Through our regularly scheduled demonstrations, we educate the public about the history of printing while providing a working letterpress job shop to fulfill the specialty printing needs for the community.

Founded in 2004, the Heritage Center Print Shop Museum, 5 W. King Street, Lancaster, PA has, from the time of its inception, attracted local and international tourists to participate in a live printing history demonstration. The .918 Club has also provided the opportunity for Boy Scouts to complete their "printing" merit badge and has given the local educational institutions an opportunity to show their students a "live" history lesson, which engages the mind and the muscle on each visit.

When the Heritage Center closed in 2009, the Print Shop Museum was offered free space as part of BUiLDiNG CHARACTER, 346 N. Queen Street. With the establishment of this new location and new name, Heritage Press Museum, we are still able to offer the community a place to visit and experience a treasure in downtown Lancaster.

Thanks to Thaddeus Stevens College of Technology, we have a rent free location for the Heritage Education Center, a hands-on print shop lab where donated equipment is used to provide classes in letterpress printing.
