1)
Carl Fontana Manuscript Collection. This collection contains manuscript scores and parts for fifty-one tunes performed and recorded by Carl Fontana (1928–2003). A staple musician in Las Vegas for decades, Fontana enjoyed a reputation as one of the most influential jazz trombone players, particularly renowned for his soloing skills. Prior to settling in Las Vegas, Fontana performed in the bands of Woody Herman, Lional Hampton, and Stan Kenton in the 1950s. In Las Vegas, he appeared with Paul Anka, Sammy Davis Jr., Tony Bennett, Wayne Newton, and the Benny Goodman Orchestra.
UNLV’s collection contains manuscripts of original arrangements used by Fontana in both performances and recordings, including The Great Fontana, It’s Tru, and others.

We are happy to announce the UNLV World Music Chamber Ensemble is recruiting new members- and we invite you to join us. The UNLV WMCE was founded in 2022 by Tianxi Wen, a DMA Conducting student with an emphasis in Ethnomusicology, and advised by Dr. Richard Miller, an assistant professor of Ethnomusicology. This co-creative ensemble is a dynamic performance group that embraces multiculturalism, diversity, and collaboration, and explores the fusion of music, dance, kung fu, and art from both Western and non-Western traditions. By celebrating various cultural practices, the group aims to showcase the power of diverse coexistence. Through intentional intersections between different traditions, the ensemble emphasizes expressivity and inclusion, making it a multidisciplinary experience highlighting the richness of global artistic heritage.
We are looking for musicians who specialize in world instruments, as well as those who play Western instruments (strings, woodwinds, brass, percussion, keyboards, etc.) but are interested in World music, to join us. In addition, we would like to work with composers interested in writing and arranging music specifically for the ensemble. We are also seeking managers who have music business experience or interests to support the ensemble's accounting, marketing, and advertising needs. All that is required of you to join this group is for you to be professional, passionate, and responsible. The establishment of this ensemble is not only for academic purposes with cultural diffusion- but to benefit every musician's personal growth with diverse musical experience.
If you are interested in joining WMCE, please send a short note to Tianxi Wen at [email protected] and cc to [email protected] by May 10th, with a brief biography and one or two sentences about what you would bring to the ensemble and what you would like to get out of participating in it. We will arrange an organizational meeting after the final week. If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact Tianxi Wen or Dr. Richard Miller.
Jonathan Rhodes Lee (Music) published a review article in the Journal of the American Musicological Society. The piece examines Nathan Link’s A Poetics of Handel’s Operas. It appears in vol. 77 no. 1, pp. 247-50 of the journal.
A Poetics of Handel’s Operas, by Nathan Link Textbooks and program notes summarize the relationship between story and music in opera seria with tidy bullet points: recitatives = action; arias = reflection; ensembles sometimes contribute to a story’s progression, while instrumental pieces typically do not.
