September 15th - October 15th is National Hispanic Heritage Month. Celebrate with the DOHS Equity Leadership Team, DOHS ADL No Place for Hate Student Consortium and the DOHS Spanish Club.
[Day - 3 A Deeper Perspective of Hispanic Culture]
The DOHS EDE Office in partnership with the DOHS Equity Leadership Team Committee and DOHS ADL - No Place for Hate Student Consortium welcome all Diamondbacks to . Today we wanted to provide a larger and deeper perspective of Hispanic culture for the Diamondbacks Community ~ In the Hispanic Community, CULTURE provides a connection to ancestry, identity, family, and a shared set of values. Respect for traditions passed down through generations; a sense of belonging manifested through food, language, music, holidays, sport, literature, and shared experiences.
There are 20 identified Hispanic countries and one territory: Argentina, Bolivia, Chile, Colombia, Costa Rica, Cuba, Dominican Republic, Ecuador, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Mexico, Nicaragua, Panama, Paraguay, Peru, Puerto Rico, Spain, Uruguay and Venezuela. An individual that identifies or embraces Hispanic culture is from or has ancestors from a Spanish-speaking territory or country. Some younger people use the term Latinx to be more inclusive to embrace the various intersectional populations within each cultural group. Many of these community members have different histories and cultures, yet are united through their shared language of Spanish. According to the Cervantes Institute, there are a total of 595 million Spanish speakers, and of those, there are 496 million native speakers, that is 83.36 %. [FACT CHECK] The United States does not have an official language even though many may think it is English by practice, the country does not have any official language. – Salute!

How it all started.....AANHPI Month begins in May but because we are leaving school before the month ends, we started the celebration in April, well really in October of last year. Our campus organization, DOHS Filipino Club celebrated Filipino Heritage Month it was a wonderful time of sharing as we learned more about our Diamondbacks whose families come from the Philippines. Thank you club members and Ms. Cruzada their advisor. The history of this month began in the US House from California congressmen Norman Mineta, ask Ms. Miller about him, and New York Representative Frank Horton in 1977 introducing a resolution for a week. In the Senate, Senators Daniel Inouye and Spark Matsunaga from Hawaii introduced a similar resolution. The following year, President Jimmy Carter signed into law a joint resolution to establish the annual event, and the first celebration took place in May of 1979. In 1992, the month of May was designated by President George H. W. Bush as Asian Pacific American Heritage Month. The annual celebration honors the many contributions and accomplishments of Asian Americans, Pacific Islander Americans, and Native Hawaiians. So since we are starting in the US Government - Hiram Fong, one of Hawaii’s first two senators, became the first Asian Pacific American to serve in the U.S. Senate in 1959. Seven others have followed in their footsteps: Samuel Hayakawa of California (1977-1983); Spark Matsunaga (1977-1990), Daniel Inouye (1963-2012), and Daniel Akaka (1990-2013) all of Hawaii; and current senators Mazie Hirono of Hawaii, Tammy Duckworth of Illinois, and Vice President, who was then Senator Kamala Harris of California. This is AANHPI Month and now you know this is HOME. “Here Ours Means Everybody!” Clark County School District ADL - Nevada Senator Tammy DuckworthSenator Mazie K. Every Tuesday is Truth Tuesday during DOHS Cultural Campus Celebration. A fact that is not taught or openly known but very important and a significant contribution to American life or History is presented. This particular biography that was featured on May 14th was about Dr. Margaret Chung aka Mama Chung.
The first American born Chinese woman doctor was Magraret Chung. When Margaret Chung graduated in 1916 form the University of Southern California she became the Chinese American woman to become a doctor. She went by the name Mike and dressed in masculine clothing because there were many denials for internships and residency after she graduated due to her culture and gender, before she became an emergency surgeon in Los Angeles. Chung is recognized as establishing the first Western hospital in San Francisco’s Chinatown and she accepted a secret assignment during WWII after volunteering as a front-line surgeon. She recruited pilots for the 1st American Volunteer group of pilots known as the Flying Tigers and this helped her get closer to high ranking officers and politicians which helped her establish the Women Accepted for Volunteer Emergency Services which paved the way for women to integrate into the US Armed Services. She was an extremely private person but “ Mama Chung”, is a well known fixture in the Armed Forces for her healthcare and recruitment of pilots and women into service and as a role model in LGBTQIA communities. Her home in Marin County, CA is a historical site.

Happy Month of May!
As a part of our continuing practice as a No Place for Hate campus, we are prepared and presented our final campus cultural celebration ~ Asian American Native Hawaiian and Pacific Islander Heritage Month. Due to our calendar year, we started early in mid April and concluded on May 14th before Final Examinations. The Equity Diversity Education Office in partnership with the DOHS Equity Leadership Team, Administration, the student organization DOHS No Place for Hate Student Consortium, and several campus organizations worked in partnership with our School Performance Plan objective Inquiry Area #3 to demonstrate our "Connectedness". These biographies and statements were displayed prominently on campus through television monitor displays, daily printed announcements, our campus website, social media accounts, and DOTV broadcasts.
