Fiber is a winner when it comes to heart health. It binds to cholesterol compounds in your diet, reducing how much cholesterol your body absorbs into the bloodstream.

It also benefits your gut microbiome and helps regulate insulin secretion. Proper fiber intake can also aid in weight loss.

Remember to drink plenty of water with your fiber supplement and aim to get your fiber naturally from foods like fruits, vegetables, and whole grains whenever possible. Prioritizing fiber in your diet is a simple but effective way to support your heart health!

This Women's Health Month, let's empower women with the knowledge and resources they need to take control of their cardiovascular well-being.

There are proactive steps women can take to reduce their risk of heart disease. Regular exercise can help strengthen the heart and improve circulation. Adopting a balanced diet lowers cholesterol levels and helps maintain a healthy weight. Managing stress through techniques like mindfulness, meditation, or deep breathing exercises can also contribute to heart health.

Avoiding to***co and limiting alcohol intake are also essential for heart health. Perhaps most importantly, attending regular check-ups with a healthcare provider is crucial for monitoring heart health.

What steps should you take after a heart attack?

Begin by focusing on your diet and exercise regimen. If approved by your cardiologist, light exercise can typically begin about ten days after the event. Regular physical activity can help you shed excess weight, a priority for post-heart attack recovery. A balanced diet, limiting calories and emphasizing nutrient-rich foods, is essential for weight loss and overall heart health as well.

While you can't fully "unclog" your arteries once they've become narrowed or blocked due to plaque buildup, there are steps you can take to slow down the process and reduce your risk of further blockages.

Lifestyle changes such as adopting a heart-healthy diet low in saturated fats and cholesterol, getting regular exercise, quitting smoking, managing stress, and controlling conditions like high blood pressure and diabetes can all help to slow the progression of arterial plaque buildup.

Medications prescribed by your doctor, such as statins or blood thinners, may also be used to help manage and stabilize plaque buildup. By working closely with your healthcare team, you can take proactive steps to protect your heart and reduce your risk of cardiovascular disease.

Fun fact: Your heart isn't exactly centered in your chest! Contrary to what many believe, it's actually positioned slightly to the left side. About two-thirds of its mass lies to the left of your body's midline. This positioning helps accommodate the heart's size and shape within the chest cavity.

This includes walking and non-walking stress testing, cardiopulmonary stress testing, nuclear cardiac imaging, transthoracic echocardiography, transesophageal echocardiography, vascular testing and heart rhythm monitoring.
When further information is needed to pinpoint the nature of an underlying abnormality, invasive cardiac assessment such as cardiac catheterization, intravascular ultrasound and electrophysiology studies may be undertaken
When advanced interventional treatment is needed, NCA Cardiologists can perform intravascular ultrasound, balloon angioplasty, coronary atherectomy, intracoronary stent placement, radiofrequency ablation and implantation of pacemakers and internal defibrillators. Many procedures are minimally invasive and can either extend life or improve the quality of life (or both). It is our goal to maximize patient benefit and comfort and to minimize risk.
Like all good physicians, NCA Cardiologists regularly stress lifestyle changes and risk factor modification in an effort to minimize cardiovascular disease progression and to foster disease regression.
