On this day in 1801: The first ever Burns Night took place. It was held by Robert Burns' friends at Burns Cottage in Alloway (now a museum). They celebrated his life, ate haggis and quoted his work, on the fifth anniversary of his death. This statue of him is in Central Park, New York.
1. He signed his name Robert, Rob, Rab and Robin... but never 'Rabbie'.
2. There are more statues, monuments and memorials dedicated to Robert Burns than any other non-religious figure, after Queen Victoria and Christopher Columbus.
3. Burns had 12 children by four different women during his short life. However, only five survived infancy.
4. He wrote his first poem when he was just 15. It was a song called โO Once I Lovโd (A Bonnie Lass)โ to impress a girl called Nellie.
5. Robert Burns was voted "The Greatest Scot" by STV viewers in 2009

Our Society was formed in 1995, through the efforts of a dozen or so dedicated people with a love of their Scottish heritage. Today the Society has a membership of 100 individuals and families. We gather each month to celebrate our heritage and bring our history and culture to events throughout Southern Nevada.
