Do the Stadium Hustle - Nevada Policy 07/31/2024

One ruse for shutting out public input is to enable the legislature to pass a stadium bill with fewer votes than before. Normally, a major subsidy to infrastructure in Nevada requires a majority vote of two-thirds of the legislators. Lombardo proposed a bill for the Athletics stadium that would require only a majority vote because it supposedly did not directly commit tax revenues. That provision was more apparent than real. The bonds floated by the government must be paid off by taxpayers.

Another trick is to delay a controversial bill until the end of the legislative session when the public won’t have time to comment on it. The bill for the Athletics stadium was delayed until 11 days before the end of the 2023 session, several weeks after the Assembly speaker had said that time was running out.

Assembly Bill 340 – California-Style Eviction Process - Nevada Policy 07/30/2024

Nevada is not the Golden State, yet we continue to fall prey to an attempt to institute similar policies. But what’s good for the goose is only sometimes good for the gander. Since Governor Joe Lombardo took office, he’s shown the power a Governor can yield. Last year, he vetoed Assembly Bill 340 (AB340), which would have restricted Nevada’s summary eviction process, similar to California’s.

In fact, the governor issued 75 vetoes during the 82nd Legislative Session of the Nevada State Legislature. The act was record-breaking. It’s up to the governor to make the tough decisions to do what is best for his constituents.

Breaking the Chains of Chance - Nevada Policy 07/29/2024

The Admission Lottery System for school choice, while aiming to create fairness, often misses the mark, especially when it comes to giving Nevada parents control over their children’s education and ensuring stability in students’ academic lives.

For millions of American families, the start of a new school year represents a stressful gauntlet through the admission lottery system, which governs many public and charter school enrollments. While promoted as an equitable way to give all students an equal shot at their school of choice, the reality is this random selection process strips parents of control over one of the most important decisions regarding their child’s future.

The Downside of the Lottery System

The flaws with admission lotteries start with the lack of parental choice. In Washington, DC parents enter a school lottery, and “for many of those families, lottery day is a difficult reminder that while the city’s public education options are improving, there are still far too few well-regarded schools to meet demand.[1]” For parents invested in customizing their child’s educational experience, being forced to enter a lottery pool is incredibly disempowering.

Collective Bargaining for Nevada System of Higher Education - Nevada Policy 07/29/2024

One of the worst consequences of former Governor Steve Sisolak’s tenure was the expansion of collective bargaining to state employees in 2019 through Senate Bill 135 (SB 135). But that’s the power the Governors wield.

In what could be considered a surprising turn of events, Governor Joe Lombardo vetoed Assembly Bill 224 (AB 224), the logical next step in this effort to expand collective bargaining. In fact, Lombardo issued a record-setting 75 vetoes during the 82nd Legislative Session of the Nevada State Legislature.

These vetoes impact Nevadans’ everyday lives and knowing about them can better prepare you to participate in the democratic process. Pool Safety or Business Squeeze? The Gym Lifeguard Debate in Nevada - Nevada Policy 07/29/2024

In a contentious move by the Southern Nevada Health District (SNHD), the longstanding waiver permitting gyms like the Las Vegas Athletic Club (LVAC) to monitor pools via video surveillance has been revoked.

This decision, prompted by recent incidents, including the tragic death of Leticia Triplett, has sparked debate over governmental control versus private business autonomy. When did SNHD become the guardians of pools in the first place?

History of Gym Pool Safety Debate

Initially granted in April 2020, the waiver allowed gyms to operate pool areas without on-site lifeguards, relying instead on advanced video monitoring systems monitored by trained staff. This approach complied with safety standards and aligned with business operations, avoiding significant additional costs.

Known for its strong endorsements and voter mobilization prowess, the union didn’t quite hit the mark this election.

Traditionally, the Culinary Union wields significant influence due to its large membership and ability to mobilize voters. However, the primary results indicate a shifting landscape, with incumbents supported by the union not securing the victories anticipated. It’s about time.

NV Rural Counties Left Behind in Economic Recovery from Shutdown - Nevada Policy 07/08/2024

Across the country, economic activity sharply declined after most state governments ordered most businesses to close in early 2020. Congress responded by authorizing trillions of dollars worth of new federal spending, financed largely by new money printing.

Expansion of Monetary Base and Inflation Trends
Between January 2020 and December 2021, the monetary base—the total amount of dollars the Federal Reserve has placed into circulation—grew 86.3%, according to Federal Reserve data. In January 2020, there were $3.443 trillion in circulation versus $6.413 trillion by December 2021.

This dramatic increase in the money supply occurred alongside a dramatic decrease in the production of goods and services as businesses were forced to close, resulting in historic rates of inflation. Between January 2020 and April 2024, average consumer prices have increased 21.0%, according to the official statistics, with the annual inflation rate peaking at 9.1% in June 2022.

Unveiling Nevada’s Pandemic Legacy: Insights from DHHS Report - Nevada Policy 07/05/2024

The Nevada Department of Health and Human Services (NV DHHS) recently released a sobering report highlighting the enduring impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic. The Center Square’s latest article delves into the report, which says it may take a long time to recover from the pandemic’s economic, education, and behavioral health impacts.

Impact of COVID
COVID-19 emerged as the third-leading cause of death in Nevada between 2020 and 2022, trailing only heart disease and cancer. The pandemic’s toll was stark: over 900,000 cases and more than 12,00 deaths among Nevada residents. These impacts are devastating, and even though they occurred a few years ago, Nevadans are still reeling from the aftermath.

Beyond its catastrophic epidemiological toll, the pandemic wreaked havoc on Nevada’s economy, education system, and behavioral health. Locking people in their homes for months didn’t stop the pandemic and resulted in more harm than good.

California's $20 Minimum Wage Fallout: Nevada's Blueprint 07/03/2024

California’s fast-food industry is dying a slow death. The California Business and Industrial Alliance (CABIA) recently released a full-page ad in USA Today that included mock “obituaries” of popular fast-food brands.

Why? Some of the Golden State’s favorite fast-food eateries have closed, impacted by the state’s new $20 minimum wage.

Is Raising the Minimum Wage a Good Idea?

Although the intention behind raising the minimum wage is often noble, the reality on the ground can be more intricate.

A recent New York Post expose revealed the grim toll of the state’s new minimum wage: 10,000 jobs slashed, iconic chains shuttering outlets, and consumers wallets feeling the pinch of price hikes.

A Swing and a Miss: How Governments Whiff on Stadiums Deals - Nevada Policy 07/01/2024

The classic 1989 movie Field of Dreams is known for the line “If you build it, he will come.” The phrase inspires an Iowa corn farmer to build a ballfield amid his crops to facilitate the return of the 1919 Chicago White Sox, especially Shoeless Joe Jackson.

Mayors of large American cities appear to believe movie magic can also happen in real life. If you build a stadium, a professional sports team will come, expense be damned.

Dream on. In reality, stadiums are usually boondoggles for their host cities.

Oakland A’s Move to Vegas?

This issue has become top of mind in Nevada since the state legislature approved a bill last summer to fork over $380 million to the Oakland Athletics for a $1.5 billion stadium in Las Vegas – legislation opposed by many city residents. In May, the Nevada Supreme Court rejected the teachers’ request for a referendum on the A’s subsidy, saying it should have cited the full 66-page law and not just the aid for the baseball stadium.

Breaking the Red Tape: Nevada’s Solution to the Housing Shortages - Nevada Policy 06/28/2024

If you build it, they will come. We know this is true as we see Nevada bust at the seams. But what happens when there’s no land to build on it?

In the neon glow of Las Vegas, a housing crisis looms. We need more land for new homes. In a recent Review-Journal article, Tina Frias of the Southern Nevada Home Builders Association warns that the Vegas Valley could face a shortage of available land in just eight years.

Federal Land in Nevada Cause Housing Shortages.

Here’s the deal: the federal government owns more than 80 percent of land in Nevada. That’s a lot of red tape to navigate.
However, here’s where it gets a bit messy. The Bureau of Land Management (BLM) manages most of Nevada’s land and that of other Western states. An entity that some argue serves no clear public purpose.
