People sometimes ask how a dog in our rescue gets along with other dogs. Our friends at Level 3 Canine asked Ellie and Erica to answer that question. More about them is posted below.

Photos from DRNV's post 06/04/2024

This 9-month-old young lady is named Erica. Erica has lived well with other dogs, cats and kids and only came to us because job demands meant her former owner was moving to Europe. She is very much an adolescent.
Erica is properly shy at first meeting, but once you’re in, you’re in! She walks politely on a lead and is a happy student in the hands of our friends at Level 3 Canine where she is learning the finer points of being a Doberlady.
She is cropped and flopped, docked, spayed and will likely top out at around 75 pounds of happiness.

Doberman lovers know red girls are special. Playful, affectionate, friendly, smart, discerning and VERY expressive are common descriptions. They are remarkable snuggle-buddies.
All of those and more apply to Ellie. She came to us just as she turned 2, was adopted into a loving experienced home, joining another young Doberman. Then, she had a seizure. The good news is that her epilepsy has been controlled. Any future seizures will be few and far between. The bad news is that other dogs are seemingly programmed to attack another experiencing a seizure. From our experience it appears innate. That happened when she had a seizure. The first dobe, otherwise best buddies who played and napped together became aggressive. Ellie could not stay in that home. The adopters were in tears.
So, if you’re open to a loving and snuggly and outstanding Red Girl to completely spoil and easily train, look at that face. Ellie gets along with dogs, cats and people of all sizes. She is very social, has manners and walks well on a lead.
The vet says she will live a normal and full life using a daily inexpensive medication. Ellie might occasionally, anywhere from months to a year or more apart experience a “breakthrough” seizure. She shouldn’t be left alone with another dog because of that.
Ellie is a princess-in-waiting.

COMMENTARY: Nevada’s local pet shelters need your help 05/13/2024

The need is critical for all rescue groups now. Please know where your heartfelt donations go and if they directly help the animals at risk. For example, neither HSUS nor ASPCA focus on direct aid to animals or shelters. This is not a criticism. They do some great work. It's an effort to assure your love is shared as you wish it to be. Thanks so much.

COMMENTARY: Nevada’s local pet shelters need your help The crisis is not limited to Nevada, with the number of shelter animals euthanized nationwide in 2023 up 15 percent from the prior year.

Hi

Ellie

She is available for adoption through DRNV

This is a very sweet, playful and dog-friendly lady named Ellie. She came to DRNV by way of the overflowing shelter. At she turned two with us she earned the title of adult. She also experienced what can also come at maturity – epilepsy.
Her first seizures were very minor but came on suddenly as happens with this affliction in Dobermans. And happily, just as quickly they stopped with use of a daily inexpensive medicine. The vet expects a complete and happy life for her with those medications and an understanding of the potential for an occasional “breakthrough” seizure that is mostly an inconvenience. She knows manners and is ready to move in.
If you have a special place in your heart for a special loving-lady who will spoil you as much as you do her, well, just look at that face.

Young boys struggle to look sophisticated in the ways of world. Teddy is working on that look. Meanwhile, he has being friendly, a leaner who readily makes friends and the rest of that “good boyyy” stuff nearly perfected.
He’s about 18 months old and wandered into a small business where he promptly slipped his head onto a lap to say hello. No identification. No collar. No microchip. Just a very nice dog trying to figure out where to go.
The shopowner has cats, has never had a big dog and could not keep him long-term. She called Animal Control and was in shock. Due to illness at the shelter they would not take him and told her to turn him loose! She was too responsible to do so and called us.
Teddy is a friendly dude who gets along with anyone who is willing to do so. He showed no interest in cats while in his temporary home and does well with dogs now.
Those ears have a life of their own and we think that when he learns to be fully sophisticated he might want to sport a monocle (LOL).
Teddy is ready. Are you?

Cue the music! We’re doing the happy dance for Gabe! And what a dance it has been.
Gabe came to us at 4 weeks of age along with 8 siblings and his mother. Their owners had not kept up vaccinations and they had parvovirus. With the support of so many we battled it and it broke our hearts over and over. After several days everyone else had died from the disease, even his mother. His drive to thrive has been amazing to behold.
In foster care he learned from patient-but-friendly adult Dobes. He arrived at 3.3 pounds. He showed a joy for living and a nub that was always wiggling as he grew. 12 weeks later he had increased 10x to 33 pounds of spectacular puppy! After all he had suffered through it seemed he was pretty much perfect! He went to puppy camp with Level 3 Canine and is a quick learner.
8 years ago a family adopted a young pup named Oscar. Oscar had been without a canine friend for a couple years and it was time. Oscar’s adopters clearly know how to raise a youngster and will do what a Dobie pup needs.
They needed about 10 seconds to decide to become a new pack (video below). It was blessed by their humans. So, is it Gabe and Oscar, or Oscar and Gabe?
Do we hear some woo-hoos? WOO-HOO!

Cue the music and get out those dancin’ shoes. This time for a gentle waltz.
We’re celebrating because Axel has found his new home! It took a while to find the perfect match. He had come to DRNV in need of expensive surgery his former owner could not afford. With your generous help we were able to get his leg repaired. But to prevent reinjury Axel must avoid greatly strenuous activities. That scared off many otherwise interested in him.
We normally do not use the names of owners, so let’s just say it did not scare off the one we might refer to as Saint Mary. Sainthood? Well, what would you call a great owner who made Axel her THIRD DRNV adoption over the years? And look at those smiling faces!
Do we hear some woo-hoos? WOO-HOO!!!

Cheers!

Cue the music and put on those happy feet dancing shoes! Dobby went home for Christmas!
This pretty young lady came to us from a loving family who just could not make the needed time for her. It was stressful for all and she had limited manners. With the help of Level 3 Canine her great personality came out as she learned to understand humans better. And a certain human fell in love with her. An experienced previous DRNV adopter who likes to take her Dobie along on daily walks made THAT connection, and Dobby the Dobie was home for Christmas!
Do we hear some woo-hoos? WOO-HOO!!!

Time for a Gabe update... his hard beginning has not slowed him down. Especially true when his bowl gets empty because he ate everything. Happy puppy!

Gabriel is living his best life on Giving Tuesday and hopes you will remember him. The only survivor of a litter of 12 lost to Parvovirus that also claimed his Mom he is a happy 7-week-old. Thank you for helping us help them.

If the music is playing it must be for the happy dance! Sometimes nice guys finish first and Rudy is one of the nicest guys around.
A big boy, we discovered Rudy gets along with nearly anybody, canine or human. He is a Blue Doberman and quite striking who came to DRNV loving car-rides, leaning at any opportunity and ready to hang out. His previous owner had lost his home. He is so friendly that his trainer with Level 3 Canine chose to take him along on vacation!
His new Mom is an experienced Dobe owner. While she’s at work her father has begun sharing the couch for taking in a classic movie. And his nub just wiggles…
Do we hear some woo-hoos? WOO-HOO!

Cue the music – we’re doing that happy dance!
It was a Happy Thanksgiving for Loni. She has adopted her new pack. Surrendered for being too peaceable, no really, she was always being hassled by another dog so she came to us – she just was looking for love. She found it and a great new life.
A natural couch potato, she loves going on hikes with her new people to explore our beautiful scenery. And, she’s a big hit at her “Grandma’s” assisted living facility where she’s made many new friends. And she has her own spot on the couch.
Yep. We’re smiling, too.
Do we hear some woo-hoos? WOO-HOO!!!

Gabriel got to celebrate Thanksgiving 2023 because of loving support from Doberman lovers. He, his mother and 8 (of 12) surviving siblings came to DRNV with Parvovirus. Only he survived. Donations helped offset the big bills that came with saving Gabe and allow us to continue. One of our most important supporters is Special Needs Dobermans. They help save lives every day.

For the next few weeks you can DOUBLE ANY DONATION thanks to a Secret Santa. Please consider us and them and all the Dobermans you can help. Puppy breath leans and Happy Thanksgiving!

The story of this Mama and her puppies has become so tragic. Born to Athena, purchased by owners in a shopping center parking lot, and then bred with a throwback male with significant physical faults, 12 puppies soon came down with Parvovirus. Parvo is easily prevented by vaccination that was not done this time.
Broke and overwhelmed when 3 pups died overnight, the owners turned them over to DRNV and we tried all to be done to save them. We knew it was uphill, but this is what a rescue does.
Two died within hours. One-by-one the remaining pups, despite aggressive treatment struggled and died. Within a week we were down to two pups and Athena. Then another pup died, but all signs were that the remaining boy and Mom would make it. A day-and-a-half later Athena rallied, and then crashed and died.
As of this writing it looks like the little guy will be OK. He has always been the strongest and most assertive. He is eating puppy food having transitioned off the gruel created to nourish him starting at only 4.5 weeks of age when he should have been nursing. He is almost old enough to begin getting disease-preventing shots. They’ll prevent a repeat of the fate that claimed his Mom and family.
As you can imagine this case has been extraordinarily expensive due to the number of dogs involved. We are asking that you please consider a donation to help us offset thousands of dollars spent trying to save 8 puppies and their Mom who died despite everything. We ask you to help us assure the surviving boy has whatever he may need.
We have named him Gabriel – the bringer of good news. We call him Gabe.

So, this happened. Nine puppies arrived at age 4.5 weeks. Mom, too. They all have parvovirus. One of the puppies has died and all are very ill. Prognosis is guarded. Treatment is underway. We're gonna' need some help.

Rudy is ready thanks to great care by Level 3 Canine to bring out his best!

Loni (aka Couch Potato) and Rudy are each still looking for people who can meet their standards (LOL). Those standards include loving, leaning and playing interrupted by occasional velcro-time. If you know, you know. They do. Applications are at www.drnv.org

10/01/2023

New experiences with Loni show us she is actually VERY social once she gets to know the other dog. Her previous owner allowed another dog to pick on her and she had become defensive and scared of other large dogs. This is video of her interacting with another DRNV Dobe named Rudy. Rudy is a big friendly boy and she seems to be doing just fine. Yes, she is available to join you and your pack. Take a look.

It’s happened again. Back in 2014 a lovely Dobergirl known as Lady Lola was adopted from DRNV. She has lived a good life until recently. A few months ago, her owner suffered some serious dementia-like illness followed by injuries which have forced her to live in a care institution. Lady Lola is now a 10-year-old homeless Doberlady.
As her owner’s life unraveled, Lady Lola was suddenly a problem relatives made clear was a problem for someone else. They would not take her and had no specific plans other than to not keep her. Of course, we have taken her back into the rescue. Lady Lola is spending some time as a foster with other DRNV homeless seniors.
Our plea is to please make arrangements for your pets in case of your incapacitation. This has happened a few times in the past year and it need not be so. We believe your commitment means trying to assure they will be OK even if you’re not.
If you have room in your heart for shy-but-friendly female who does not need to go for long walks, does not need a lot of exercise but who thrives on snuggling and hanging out with humans and dogs and many cats we’d love to hear from you
