“Celebrando Nuestra Cultura”

Showcasing the rich culture and vibrant traditions of our Las Latin American community. This first ever Latino Festival was hosted by Commissioners Tick Segerblom and William McCurdy II. The event had everything - Latin American dishes prepared by local vendors, performances by talented musicians who brought the rhythms of Latin America to life. There was also a chance to learn about the history and contributions of Latin American cultures through engaging and informative exhibits.

In addition, the Consulmex Las Vegas and Consulado General de El Salvador en Las Vegas, Nevada were on-site offering services and assistance.

A great night with our Government Center Amphitheater as the backdrop and the goal of fostering a deeper understanding and appreciation of the diversity that makes Clark County unique.

There's a spirited rivalry between Las and and UNLV and the University of Nevada, Reno. Despite the long-standing competition between north and south, red and blue, Rebels and Wolfpack - we are connected to UNR in numerous ways. Many people from Las Vegas go to/attended college at UNR and there are strong partnerships and ties to the Wolfpack family.

That's why Commissioners were pleased to take the opportunity to congratulate UNR as the college is about to mark the 150th anniversary of its founding. President Brian Sandoval was presented a proclamation - he also gave a presentation on some of the things happening at UNR. Congratulations to the school up north!

Commissioners also recognized President Sandoval as part our commemorations of Hispanic Heritage Month. A former two-term Governor of Nevada, Mr. Sandoval is the first Hispanic president of UNR as well as the first alumnus to serve as President.

Finally, Mr. Sandoval congratulated the UNLV Football Rebels on being ranked in college football's Top 25 for the first time ever. He says he'll root for UNLV except for one occasion - when UNLV and the Nevada Wolf Pack meet on November 30 at Allegiant Stadium in the battle for the Fremont Cannon.

Noon update from the Clark County School District.🚨
Due to the conditions, the school district has canceled non-essential outdoor activities for September 11. Lunch, physical education classes, and recess are being moved indoors. Athletics and activities are canceled and will be rescheduled.
-----
You can see, smell, even feel the smoke from around Las . No surprise our Division of Air Quality (DAQ) has issued an air quality alert. The skies were so smoky, it turned the sun red as it rose this morning.

Under today’s conditions, it may be best for children, the elderly and people with respiratory issues and heart disease to stay indoors.

HELPFUL TIPS TO LIMIT PERSONAL EXPOSURE TO SMOKE
•Stay indoors when you see or smell smoke.
•Keep windows and doors closed.
•Limit outdoor exertion on days with high levels of fine particles in the air. Exercise makes you breathe heavier and increases the amount of particulates you are likely to inhale.
•Consider changing your indoor air filters if they are dirty.

: Las lost one of our own that awful day 23 years ago. Clark County School District/Palo Verde High teacher Barbara Edwards was on the plane that hit the . There's a memorial dedicated to her at the school. Barbara was a foreign language teacher who helped build that department at Palo Verde High. She was also a big soccer fan.

A few months before 9-11, she and two other teachers were involved in a car crash. Barbara suffered broken arms and had taken some time off to recover. She had gone to visit a friend in Virginia and was returning to Las Vegas on September 11.

Although none of today's Palo Verde students were even born on 9-11-01, they still gather to remember and honor Barbara Edwards. Her memory and legacy lives on at the school.
