Today is a day of recognition, restoration, and celebration!
June 19th is a holiday commemorating the emancipation of enslaved African Americans. On June 19, 1865, nearly two years after President Lincoln emancipated enslaved Africans in America, Union troops arrived in Galveston Bay, Texas. The Union troops led by General Gordon Granger found that Africans were still enslaved in the state of Texas. General Granger issued an order proclaiming freedom for more than 250,000 slaves in Texas.
With the principles of self-determination, citizenship, and democracy magnifying their hopes and dreams those Texans held fast to the promise of true liberty for all and celebrate Juneteenth every June.

This involves an absolute equality of rights and rights of property between former masters and slaves, and the connection heretofore existing between them becomes that between employer and hired laborer."

Huge thanks to all the crews, organizations, folks on the front lines, and folks helping to make it all happen behind the scenes.

This evening, we are happy to share that the Interlaken Fire is 86% contained. Acreage has increased to 731. This larger number is due in part to more accurate mapping from our most recent MMA flight, and to increased acreage on the north edge of the fire where it continues to slowly back down toward the trail near the lake.

Smoke was more visible today as interior pockets of unburned fuel heated and burned. Helicopters dropped water on these areas today to cool them.

PRE-EVACUATION LIFTED – Interlaken Fire
June 15, 2024, at 7:00pm

Twin Lakes, Colo – The Lake County Sheriff, Heath Speckman will be canceling the Pre-Evacuation notice for the Lost Canyon area (County Road 30 and Other Roads off of CR-30 within Lake County) as of June 15, 2024 at 7:00pm. Due to the increased containment of the Interlaken Fire and based off information received by partner agencies the Lake County Sheriff’s Office is cancelling the Pre-Evacuation Notice. Sheriff Speckman would like to thank the community for their continued support and cooperation.

Affected Area: southern Lake County, and northern Chaffee County. Locations include, but are not limited to, Twin Lakes, Granite, and along Highway 24 in this area.

Advisory in Effect: 6:00 PM MDT, Tuesday, June 11, 2024 to 9:00 AM MDT, Wednesday, June 12, 2024.

Public Health Recommendations: If smoke is thick or becomes thick in your neighborhood you may want to remain indoors. This is especially true for those with heart disease, respiratory illnesses, the very young, and the elderly. Consider limiting outdoor activity when moderate to heavy smoke is present. Consider relocating temporarily if smoke is present indoors and is making you ill. If visibility is less than 5 miles in smoke in your neighborhood, smoke has reached levels that are unhealthy.

Outlook: Smoke from a the Interlaken wildfire, located approximately 5 miles northwest of Granite, will affect the advisory area through Tuesday evening and into Wednesday morning.
