Congratulations to Univ of Kentucky trumpet alumnus, Madison Barton (MM '22), who was recently appointed Interim Trumpet Professor at Western Carolina University!!! We are so proud of you!
Madison completed her master's degree at UK in 2022, where she was a teaching assistant and performed and toured with the UK Faculty Brass Quintet. Madison is currently nearing completion of her doctorate at Florida State University.

Congratulations to DMA student Stephen Wadsack for his new full-time appointment as Assistant Professor of Trumpet at Kennesaw State University! Stephen just returned from a trip to Greece where he did some primary source research in Athens and Corfu for his doctoral dissertation, which he defends this week!

Congratulations to UK Trumpet Student Victor Yuen who is featured in the magazine "Diverse: Issues in Higher Education" as one of ten Rising scholars in 2024!!!

Hitting the High Notes Victor Wing Heng Yuen is both a gifted musician and a talented educator. To that end, he is pursuing two doctoral degrees at the University of Kentucky (UK).

UK trumpet faculty Jason Dovel and Abby Temple are headed to California this week to present at the 2024 International Trumpet Guild Conference. Dr. Dovel will be presenting a warm-up and session and master class, and Abby Temple will be directing the Junior Youth Trumpet Ensemble. We hope to see you there!

It’s our last Faculty Friday! Today we’re featuring our Director, Dr. Jason Dovel 🎉 See you June 3rd!

The American Record Guide described Jason Dovel’s trumpet playing as “spectacular” and praised his “full tone and terrific technical skills.” Of his debut CD, the International Trumpet Guild Journal reviewer wrote, “On every track, Dovel’s nuanced, stylistic interpretations and technical mastery are on full display.”

Jason Dovel joined the University of Kentucky School of Music faculty in 2013, where he is currently Associate Professor of Trumpet as well as Chair of the Division of Winds, Brass, Percussion, and Jazz. He serves as faculty sponsor of UK Education Abroad programs in Greece and Australia and is also founding director of the UK Summer Trumpet Institute, UK Baroque Trumpet Symposium, as well as the Certificate in Baroque Trumpet. During his 2021 sabbatical, Dovel served as Visiting Professor of Trumpet at Ionian University in Corfu, Greece.

We’re just a couple weeks away from the UK Summer Trumpet Institute! Today we’re featuring Abby Temple, who is also our Assistant Director 🎺

Abby Temple is a Kentucky-based trumpeter and artist from Hickory, North Carolina. She currently serves on faculty at the University of Kentucky as an Adjunct Instructor of Trumpet, where she assists Dr. Jason Dovel in teaching the trumpet studio, and plays in the UK Faculty Brass Quintet.

A versatile performer, she regularly performs on baroque trumpet and modern trumpet. She served as Principal Trumpet with the Du Bois Orchestra, and recently performed the Haydn Trumpet Concerto with the UK Symphony Orchestra. For her solo projects, Abby performs programs incorporating multi-disciplinary art, free improvisation, and teaching artistry.

Abby earned a master’s degree from the Longy School of Music and holds a Bachelor of Music in Music Performance from the University of Kentucky. Abby has studied trumpet with Ashley Hall, Andy Kozar, Jason Dovel, Tim Hudson, and Tim Phillips.

Our next faculty introduction is the one, the only, Vince DiMartino! 🎵

Vince DiMartino is one of the most sought after trumpet performers and educators. Since graduating from The Eastman School of Music in 1972, professor DiMartino taught at the University of Kentucky until 1993. At that time, Mr. DiMartino began a new appointment as Distinguished Artist in residence at Centre College in Danville, Kentucky. He is now a distinguished Matton Professor of Music Emeritus at Centre College.

Mr. DiMartino is equally known as a jazz artist. He has been the lead and solo trumpet in the Lionel Hampton Band, the Chuck Mangione Band, the Clark Terry Band and The Eastman Arranger’s Holiday Orchestra. He has also performed with some of this country’s finest college jazz ensembles. Vince has been a member of the artist-faculty of the highly acclaimed Skidmore Jazz Institute since its inception in 1988, working with fellow artist-teachers Milt Hinton, Todd Coolman, Ed Shaughnessy, Frank Mantooth, Curtis Fuller, Dick Oatts and Pat LaBarbera.

Vince DiMartino is an S.E. Shires Trumpet Artist and plays Pickett Brass Mouthpieces.

We're excited to feature Nairam Simoes today for Faculty Friday! 🎺

Originally from Brazil, Dr. Nairam Simoes enjoys a multifaceted international career as a performer, music educator, and clinician with a wealth of knowledge particularly in chamber and Brazilian music. He is the Assistant Professor of Trumpet at Arkansas State University. Prior to his appointment at A-State, he served as trumpet faculty at Lamar University and Texas A&M-Kingsville. In addition to his teaching duties, he is the editor of the Orchestra Section Profile column for the International Trumpet Guild Journal.

As an active performer, he has played with the Memphis
Symphony Orchestra, Arkansas Symphony Orchestra, Symphony of Southeast Texas, Dayton Philharmonic, Lexington Philharmonic, Springfield Symphony, Kentucky Symphony and for the Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra. He has been a featured soloist with the Arkansas Musicworks Brass Band at the Arkansas Bandmasters Association Convention in Fort Smith, AR and with Lamar University Symphonic Band, the Joao Pessoa City Band, Paraiba Symphony Orchestra and other ensembles. As a cornetist, he performs with the internationally acclaimed British-style brass band in Kansas City - Fountain City Brass Band (FCBB) and placed first in the 2022 Northern American Brass Band Championship (NABBA) in Huntsville, AL.

Dr. Simoes holds a Doctor of Musical Arts degree from the University of Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music, a Master of Music degree from the University of Massachusetts Amherst, and a Bachelor of Music degree from the University of Memphis. His primary teachers included Alan Siebert, Phil Collins, Eric Berlin, David Spencer, Kyle Millsap, Scott Moore, Marie Speziale, Jim Pandolfi, and Charles Schlueter.

Dr. Nairam Simoes is a S.E. Shires Trumpets performing artist. He is also an endorsing artist for Torpedo Bags, Monster Oil and Robinson Remedies. He is a recording artist for the Fundamental Sounds label.
