12/16/2022

This is a milestone day for our graduates, and it is Dean Julian Vasquez Heilig’s last graduation day with us. As you watch this video featuring a sampling of many fond memories of his time with us, join us in thanking him for his leadership the last three years. With courage and justice, he helped us grow and better ourselves, our programs, and our practices. We are so grateful for the foundation he laid as we continue this work.

A few words faculty, staff and students used to describe his service at UK:
• Wisdom
• Calmness/poise
• Humor
• Courage
• The "cool" UK dean
• Always able to find a silver lining
• Allowed/encouraged people to have work/life harmony
• Implemented much-needed change
• Encouraging, empowering -- extended the ladder down to others and helped them climb up
• Deliberation
• Intention
• A true champion
• A big heart for service

We wish him the very best in his next adventure as a provost at a research institution in his home state of Michigan.

In the words of the great Maya Angelou, "I am convinced that courage is the most important of all the virtues. Because without courage, you cannot practice any other virtue consistently. You can be kind for a while; you can be generous for a while; you can be just for a while, or merciful for a while, even loving for a while. But it is only with courage that you can be persistently and insistently kind and generous and fair."

"This seminar was a great chance to see what principals are looking for in a teacher candidate. We workshopped our answers to common interview questions and got to know the principals along the way. Making these connections with leaders in the district is so valuable. Mrs. Meade always does a wonderful job of providing these opportunities to us. I also loved getting to interview alongside my peers and see how we have grown into such strong candidates through the program. This seminar was especially valuable to me, as it gave me the confidence I needed to rock my next job interview and receive an offer!" - Sara Biggs, elementary education senior https://education.uky.edu/kentucky-school-leaders-prepare-december-grads-for-interviews-teaching-careers/

Many of us feel the sting of these fresh wounds. We long for healing, and while we have made progress as a community, we are not there yet.

We cope by leaning on one another and lifting one another. We start by naming what we see – racism and violence – and condemning it. Leaning and lifting also take many forms that go beyond words of concern to action.

We will share anti-racist and self-care opportunities in the coming days.
