Big waves of excitement ahead! ๐ We're thrilled to announce our brand-new partnership with Step Into Swim to provide several no-cost swimming lessons to children from across the Midwest!
Drowning is the leading cause of unintentional death for children ages 1-4; however, receiving formal swimming lessons reduces the risk of drowning by 88%. We are proud to partner with Step Into Swim to positively impact our communities and continue spreading awareness of the importance of water safety.
Step Into Swim is a non-profit, nationwide initiative of the Pool & Hot Tub Alliance dedicated to creating more swimmers through safe swim education. Since 2012, they have gifted more than 300,000 children swim lessons. We couldn't be more excited to extend our impact to even more children! ๐

Did you know that swimming lessons play a crucial role in your child's development? It's not just about fun in the water but also about acquiring life-saving skills and boosting cognitive and physical development. ๐ง ๐ช
Studies show that kids who participate in swimming lessons from an early age demonstrate advanced motor skills, adapt better to new environments, and even perform better academically! ๐
And let's not forget the confidence boost. Mastering swimming strokes gives your little ones a sense of achievement, leading to improved self-esteem. ๐๐๐โโ๏ธ
Let's continue to make swimming a life skill, not just a sport! ๐
to our last photoshoot! Ever wonder how we get those underwater shots? Thanks to our friends at Fresh Coast Collective, we were able to capture some lessons in action. ๐คฉ๐ธ
Here's what swimming lessons are like at Foss Swim School:
1. Our friendly front office staff greets you as you walk in! You can head over to our Swim Shop, which has all the swimming lesson essentials you may need, such as swimsuits, goggles, towels, and more. We also have a play area where your kiddos can hang out while they wait for their lesson.
2. Our personalized Swim Pathยฎ curriculum considers each studentโs age, previous water experiences, and skills already developed to determine their best pace for learning in our 91-degree pools!
3. You can prepare for class in one of our clean, spacious, and private changing areas!
4. Dry off quickly after class with one of our Dyson hair dryers. Plus, we have swimsuit dryers that make transporting your suit after class easy. No more plastic bags!
5. Lots of FUN! Our teachers make learning to swim fun with games and songs. Your student will make friendships with other classmates as they learn a lifesaving skill. ๐
2024 is here. Have you thought about the ways to set your child up for success this year? Here are a few ways to give your child the tools they need to make the most of 2024. ๐
โ
Make sleep a priority. Sleep is critical for creating healthy habits. Especially after the holidays, we typically aren't sticking to a set sleep schedule, so help your child get back into a routine by creating a relaxing environment for them to get those Z's. ๐ด
โ
Encourage a balance of various activities. Finding ways to get kids' energy out in the winter can be tricky, but it's still important to find ways for kids to be active for at least 60 minutes daily. One way to do this is by enrolling your child Foss Swim School for Winter Quarter swimming lessons! ๐ (You can do so here ๐ https://ow.ly/8Kh950Qnrcr)
โ
Create a positive routine. Your morning routine sets the tone for the day, so finding fun ways to make habits is essential. Some ideas are making breakfast as a family or reading a book before school.
โ
Be present and supportive. The most critical piece is being there for your child through all the ups and downs. At FOSS, caregiver and parental engagement is a core piece of our program because we've learned that our students learn best when they feel supported. ๐
What are some tips that you have? We'd love to hear them! ๐
Dreaming of summer? Make the most of your summer plans with our Summer Swim Camps! Give your little ones a summer they wonโt forget, filled with fun, friendship, and water safety skills. โ๏ธ๐๐๏ธ
Our swim camps are a flexible option for families, as they are less time commitment, provide the same curriculum as our quarterly classes, and can result in even MORE progress! They're the perfect way to fit summer swimming lessons and water safety into your busy summer schedule.
You can enroll for Summer Swim Camps today on your FOSS Family Account! Click here to enroll ๐ https://ow.ly/yxKB50QmBJi
Today, we honor Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., a champion of justice, equality, and peace. This year, we invite you to teach your swimmers about his tremendous legacy.๐๐
1๏ธโฃ Start with the basics: ๐ Share simple facts about MLK's life, his dedication to civil rights, and how he changed the world through love, not violence.
2๏ธโฃ Effects on history: ๐ Map out a timeline of key events, showcasing how MLKโs speeches and actions resulted in crucial law changes, a ground-breaking era in history!
3๏ธโฃ The Power of Words: ๐ Read excerpts from his speeches, such as the famous "I Have A Dream," and discuss the importance of positive dialogue and speaking up for justice.
4๏ธโฃ Emphasizing Equality: ๐ Finishing up by discussing equality in the current world, pointing out improvements as well as areas still in need of change. This will help them understand that Kingโs dream is still alive and relevant.
Let the spirit of unity thrive in our children's hearts, just like it did in MLK's. ๐
Learning to swim can be a scary experience at first, but having a warm and caring swim teacher can make the biggest difference.๐
MG was uncomfortable with swimming until her teacher, Ms. Gina, helped her overcome her fear of water. With all of Ms. Gina's help and encouragement, MG is now heading up to the next level! ๐คฉ
Crying at lessons is natural and almost always healthy. At Foss Swim School, our approach to teaching swimming begins with getting kids to a place where they can laugh! When a child is crying, we use different tools, such as:
๐ Letting a child watch for a while to see how much other kids enjoy the water
๐ Offering reassurance and giving a child a small thing they can do and reward them with joy
๐ Bringing in help to allow the instructor more one-on-one time with the child
๐ Addressing specific sources of anxiety where possible (such as trying a class at a quieter time)
We hire mature, personable, and engaging adults to ensure our students are always in a comfortable and encouraging environment. ๐
Meet this week's feature, Swim Teacher Kae Joyner from our Ballwin, MO school! ๐
Kae loves cookie dough ice cream, curry, and dogs! She enjoys diving for rings and playing pool volleyball, too. Her favorite FOSS story was when she had a student who was so close to progressing to the next level all quarter, and finally, on the last day of classes, something clicked, and they swam so confidently! She loved seeing their bright lightbulb moment in the final class of the quarter. ๐ก
You can learn more about Kae in her feature here ๐ https://ow.ly/KRS650QnNPl
We are excited to partner with Outdoor Afroโs (Outdoor Afro) Making Waves program to provide 200 kids and caregivers with beginner swim lessons at no cost. ๐
Outdoor Afro is a national not-for-profit organization that celebrates and inspires Black connections and leadership in nature. Making Waves is an uplifting and life-saving solution for our local communities to access and strengthen relationships with water.

As 2024 starts, you may wonder, "What's the best age to start swimming lessons?" At Foss Swim School, we believe anyone can learn to swim at any time! ๐โโ๏ธ
The only requirement to learning to swim at FOSS is that you must be at least 6 months old. The reason for this is quite surprising because it has nothing to do with a child's ability to enjoy water or the risks you may typically associate with pools. It actually has to do with nutrition!
Babies under 6 months old get their nutrition from milk or formula. Until 6 months old, it is typically their sole source of food and water. When babies under 6 months old drink significant amounts of water, it can cause upset stomachs. You can learn more about this here ๐ https://ow.ly/h7Fc50QletH
Therefore, we decided to start teaching swimming lessons once a child is 6 months old so they can learn to without becoming ill. ๐๐๐
WELCOME BACK! We're cheesing because it's the first day of Winter Quarter swimming lessons! ๐๐๐โ๏ธ๐
On your marks... get set for a quarter filled with progress-building, laughter, and learning in our 91-degree water! Take a break from the cold and warm up with comfortable swimming all winter long. ๐

Winter is here, so it's the most critical time for swimmers to think about hair and skin care. Keeping your skin healthy and moisturized is essential to enjoying your swimming experience this season. ๐โโ๏ธ
We've gathered some essential winter skin care tips, so check this out! ๐คฉ
1๏ธโฃ Shower right after swimming and keep your showers short and warm. Hot water strips moisture, so turn down the temp and limit the duration of your showers.
2๏ธโฃ Use a mild body wash to restore moisture and prevent dryness that comes with the winter cold.
3๏ธโฃ Moisturize as soon as you get out of the shower. Layer on a thick, oil-based moisturizer to lock in hydration.
4๏ธโฃ Check out our VitaC shampoo and leave-in conditioner! Packed with vitamin C, our patented VitaC is strong enough to break chlorine bonds and gentle enough to leave your hair soft and smooth.
5๏ธโฃ A cotton towel is essential for drying off. Avoid air-drying as it can increase dryness.
Keep these practices in mind as we head into Winter Quarter swimming lessons this January! ๐โโ๏ธ ๐๐
Our new Western Springs, IL team is enjoying some team bonding activities ๐คฉ
Our Western Springs school opens next year for Spring Quarter to bring even more safe, strong, and confident swimmers to Illinois! ๐๐๐
