Assistant Professor Abigail Cochran recently had an article published in Travel Behaviour and Society, "Perceived discrimination, transit use, and walking behavior during the COVID-19 pandemic: Evidence from the Understanding America Study," co-authored with Jueyu Wang (Texas A&M Transportation Institute) and Evan Iacobucci (Missouri State University).
Their latest publication in Travel Behaviour and Society explores how perceived discrimination during the COVID-19 pandemic affected transit use and walking behavior across different racial groups. Despite reporting more frequent perceptions of discrimination, Black and Hispanic respondents continued using transit at higher rates, while White and Asian respondents walked more. Importantly, we find that individual-level discrimination had little impact on these behaviors—structural factors likely play a much larger role in explaining pronounced racial disparities in travel.
