The Department of Agricultural Economics and the Center for Agricultural Profitability participated in the East Campus Discovery Days last Saturday. We had a great time interacting with the community, playing our "agricultural economics trivia" and talking about career opportunities and our work supporting farms, ranches and agribusinesses in Nebraska.
One of our grad students, Milan Chauhan at his poster session at the recent AAEA24 in New Orleans LA featuring "Exploring economic and policy factors driving the market share of Livestock Risk Protection (LRP) at national, and state levels in the United States and county level in Nebraska."

Parsons selected as new Center for Agricultural Profitability director Jay Parsons was selected in April as the new director of the Center for Agricultural Profitability at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, following the retirement of Larry Van Tassell, who served as the center’s director since its inception in July 2021.
Congratulations to all those who received awards at our 2024 Graduate Awards Ceremony. Jacob Michels received the JB Hassler PhD award, Olivier Tuyizere received the JB Hassler MS award, Jessica Windh received the Tomek PhD award, and Sagar Dahal received the Tomek MS award.

Some exciting news from Dr. Daniela Mattos' AECN376 Rural Community Economics Class! Dr. Daniela Mattos and her dedicated students recently returned to Crete, NE, to present the results of their Service Learning Project on Community Revitalization through Applied Economics to the community. Congratulations to all the students for their outstanding efforts and for making a positive impact through their work!
The Department celebrated our students’ academic and leadership achievements at its annual Scholars and Leaders Banquet on May 2. The following awards were presented.
 Academic Achievement. Seniors and juniors with 4.0 grade point averages (4 seniors and 2 juniors) and 3.75 or above grade point averages (21 juniors and 16 seniors).
 Western Agricultural Economics Association Award. Based on academic achievement and leadership.
 Department Leadership and Service Award. Awarded to a senior who has demonstrated outstanding leadership and/or service in the department over their college career. This includes leadership in one of the three student organizations, serving as a department ambassador, being a member of the NAMA marketing plan or AAEA quiz bowl teams, participating in search committee interviews, to name a few.
 Department Student Ambassadors. Our ambassadors represent the department in various activities such as CASNR open house for prospective students and parents, UNL and CASNR Admitted Student Events, individual campus visits, Admissions Red Letter Days, and outreach events such as the Pathways to Careers FFA workshops. They also coordinate help host department events, generate social media posts, come up with creative t-shirt designs and give-away ideas, and more!

Congratulations to everyone that was honored yesterday at our 2023-2024 Student Scholars/ Leaders and Alumni and Service Awards! The Department of Agricultural Economics at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln recognized Michael Langemeier and Kristi Boswell as recipients of its 2024 Outstanding Alumni Awards, and the Nebraska Corn Board, as the recipient of its 2024 Outstanding Service Award.
The three honors are awarded annually to individuals and organizations in recognition of their significant contributions to agriculture, which align with the department’s research, teaching and outreach in agribusiness, agricultural production and profitability, natural resources, rural development, international trade, and industrial organization. A separate post will be made to recognize our student scholars.

Brooks selected as Agricultural Economics Department Head Kate Brooks has been selected as the next head of the Agricultural Economics Department at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. Her appointment will be effective May 1.
