Great things on the horizon for early childhood! Get in the know!!

First Five Nebraska kicked off a public education campaign promoting the Child Care Tax Credit and School Readiness Tax Credit today with State Senator Eliot Bostar and Bryan Slone, president of the Nebraska Chamber of Commerce & Industry. The refundable and nonrefundable tax credits may be claimed on 2024 state tax returns and are designed to help address challenges facing providers and the families, employers and communities who depend on them. They are the result of legislation introduced last year by Senator Eliot Bostar and passed with significant bipartisan support. At the kickoff, Senator Bostar spoke about the importance of a robust childcare industry to keep Nebraska’s economy strong. “The Child Care Tax Credit and School Readiness Tax Credit can ease financial burdens on families with young kids while helping to grow our state’s supply of quality childcare and the skilled workforce needed to deliver it.”

What were your favorite sports as a child??

A recent study found that children now spend twice as much time indoors playing video games than playing outside. Getting involved in sports can help children become more active, aiding in their physical, mental and emotional development.

Did you know??

It may surprise you that children ages 3 to 5 years old are recommended to have at least 3 hours of physical activity per day from the American Academy of Pediatrics. This includes all intensities, from light, moderate and vigorous movement. Young children should engage in active play as well as in structured activities, such as throwing games and bicycle or tricycle riding. To strengthen bones, young children should do activities that involve hopping, skipping, jumping, and tumbling. As a general guideline, for every hour of awake time, at least 15 minutes of that should be spent moving and playing.

To engage the mind you must engage the body!!

Movement is vital to learning because it facilitates the development of essential connections in the brain. 🧠

Structured and free movement activities help children with their budding strength, balance and muscle control as they hone their ability to run, jump, stand on one foot, throw and catch.

You can even take these skills to the next level by adding props like silk scarves, balloons, ribbons, or balls to your next dance time together!

High quality early childhood educators know about the importance of movement, which is why it’s a part of Step Up to Quality’s quality indicators. Learn more about finding a quality child care provider on our website — and let's get moving! 🕺💃 stepuptoquality.ne.gov

We are THRILLED to share that the latest issue of Exchange Press magazine features Dimensions Education Programs and our very own teacher, Mr. Ben!

From the article, Ben describes his experience coming back to Dimensions this way: “I love working here. It is like my second family, and I plan to keep teaching here until I retire! To know that many of my teachers are still here and they still love teaching means so much to me.” In addition to reestablishing relationships with his former teachers, Ben has forged strong relationships with new colleagues, children, and families. Ben understands how important relationships are. He shares that his goal is to “make every child feel welcomed, loved, and included in every activity.” Ben said, “I knew since I was a child myself, that if the kids could relate to me and I could relate to them as well, I would make a big impact.”

According to research from Temple University, there are 6 principles of language development in young children. Intentional efforts to build language skills pay off later in life: children are more expressive, they communicate better and can develop earlier literacy skills, among other things. This month we will delve into language development in early childhood.

For a deeper dive on the 6 principles, plus ways parents and educators can support the children in their care this way, visit https://my.chartered.college/early-childhood-hub/six-principles-of-language-development-and-how-to-support-them-in-early-childhood-settings/
