Lincoln Municipal Band

The Lincoln Municipal Band was formed in 1907 and presents an annual series of free concerts on Sunday evenings in Antelope Park from July to August.

The band also provides educational outreach to local schools and hosts a Young Artist Competition.

Meet our soloist for this weekend’s concert: Scott Anderson!

Scott Anderson is Professor of Trombone in the Glenn Korff School of Music at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. He is the head of the Brass and Percussion Area and also teaches courses in rock history. Anderson holds the Vernon A. Forbes Chair as Principal Trombone in the Lincoln Symphony Orchestra.

He has performed solo recitals throughout the United States, including the International Trombone Association, the American Trombone Workshop, Iowa State University, Concordia University, Luther College (Iowa), Trinity College (Texas), The University of Memphis, and St. Cloud State University. He has also appeared as a soloist with the Dallas Brass, the Strategic Air Command Band, the ACC Heartland of America Band, the Twin Ports Wind Orchestra, the University of Nebraska Wind Ensemble, the University of Nebraska Symphonic Band, the Omaha Wind Symphony, the University of Minnesota Symphony Orchestra, the Iowa State University Symphony Orchestra, The Nebraska Chamber Ensemble, The New Music Agency, and the Iowa State University Wind Ensemble.

Anderson is an active orchestral performer on trombone, tenor tuba, and bass trumpet and has performed nationally and internationally as Principal and Second Trombone with the Minnesota Orchestra, the Saint Paul Chamber Orchestra, the Omaha Symphony, and the Des Moines Symphony and as second trombone in the Kansas City Symphony, Kansas City Ballet, and Opera Omaha. He has performed under the direction of a number of conductors including Osmo Vanska, Christopher Hogwood, John Williams, Eiji Oue, Robert Shaw, Neeme Järvi, Christoph Eschenbach, David Zinman, Hans Vonk, Edward Polochick, and Edo de Waart.

Meet our soloists this weekend: Offutt Brass!

Offutt Brass, the brass ensemble of the United States Air Force Heartland of America Band, is comprised of two trumpets, horn, trombone, tuba, and percussion. With a diverse repertoire featuring classical selections, patriotic favorites, jazz and popular music, new compositions and distinctive arrangements, the world-class musicians of Offutt Brass showcase the Air Force’s excellence and precision in every performance.
In addition to community concerts, Offutt Brass performs patriotic music and fanfares for military ceremonies and important civic events throughout Nebraska and other areas of the Midwest. As professional Airman, Offutt Brass is committed to inspiring our American public, communicating our Air Force core values, and honoring our nation’s veterans through the power of music. They are proud to represent our nation’s Airmen who fly, fight and win in air and space.

Meet our soloist for this weekend’s concert: Dean Haist!

Dean is a native Nebraskan and can best be described as a musical entrepreneur involved with a variety of nonprofit arts organizations and musical activities. He received his Bachelor of Music and Master of Music degrees from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln and served on the faculty of Nebraska Wesleyan University in Lincoln for 31 years teaching trumpet, brass and jazz ensemble, and jazz improvisation. He is President of Arts Incorporated, a business formed in 1987 that provides management services for the Capital Jazz Society, FCLT Brass, Lincoln Community Foundation Garden Performance Series, Grand Island Music Series, Lincoln Municipal Band, Nebraska Brass, Nebraska Jazz Orchestra, Nebraska Trumpet Ensemble, and Thursday Night Music Series. It includes the American Music Corporation, the Nebraska Symphony Chamber Orchestra, and also contracts professional musicians for a variety of musical events, from classical to jazz and touring Broadway shows throughout the region.

Dean is Executive Director and lead trumpet of the Nebraska Jazz Orchestra; the founder, Executive Director, and first trumpet of the Nebraska Brass; the Executive Director and first trumpet of the Lincoln Municipal Band; and the Executive Director of the Capital Jazz Society, and the Nebraska Trumpet Ensemble. In 2021 he co-founded the Grand Island Music Series and also serves as the Executive Director.

Dean is a member of the International Trumpet Guild and has been a frequent performer at their annual conferences, including Sydney, Australia in 2010. He has served on the board of the American Federation of Musicians, Local 463, Lincoln, the Lincoln Arts Council, and grant review panels for the Nebraska Arts Council. In 1997 he was named Nonprofit Executive of the Year by the Association of Nonprofit Executives, and in 2021 his business received a Mayor’s Arts Award in part for the more than 150 livestream and other events produced by his business during the pandemic.

As a busy freelance trumpet soloist and artist, he has been involved with many musical organizations, including the following: Omaha Symphony Orchestra, Lincoln Symphony Orchestra, Opera/Omaha, Nebraska Brass, Irie Caribbean Jazz, Nebraska Trumpet Ensemble, FCLT Brass, and the Nebraska Jazz Orchestra, along with well over one hundred other groups since he began his career. He has recorded for numerous radio and television commercials and documentaries, was a back-up vocalist in the major motion picture The Cotton Club, starring Richard Gere, and appeared as an actor in the television production Amerika, starring Kris Kristofferson.

Dean has performed and been a soloist with a number of groups throughout the United States, Europe, East Asia, Australia, and the Caribbean. He has also worked with and performed with a diverse group of artists, including: Bob Hope, Aaron Copland, Bright Eyes, Doc Severinsen, Cursive, Jay McShann, Maroon Five, George Burns, Duck, Freddie Hubbard, Marilyn Maye, Marvin Stamm, Walter Cronkite, Bob Newhart, The Four Tops, The Smothers Brothers, Doris Day, Carol Channing, Clark Terry, Frankie Valli, Wayne Bergeron, Don Menza, Bobby Watson, Sammy Davis, Jr., Wayne Newton, Fresh Aire/Mannheim Steamroller, Wayne Bergeron, The Temptations, Karrin Allyson, Claude “Fiddler” Williams, Frankie Avalon, Rod Stewart, Bobby Watson, Red Skelton, Third World, Liberace, The Nelson Riddle Orchestra, Claudio Roditi, and Big Bird, among many others.

He has performed on a number of cruise ships and can be heard on American Gramophone, Visual Music, Saddle Creek and American Music as well as other recording labels with 28 recordings. He performs often with touring Broadway productions in Lincoln and Omaha, including: The Producers, Chicago, South Pacific, Peter Pan, All Shook Up, White Christmas, The King and I, Something Rotten, Wicked, and Book of Mormon among others.

Bo Atlas is Principal Tubist with the Des Moines Symphony, Tubist with the Nebraska Brass, and teaches Tuba and Euphonium at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. His prior appointments include Lecturer at Truman State University as well as teaching positions at Grinnell College, Graceland University, and Simpson College. Meet the soloist for our concert this weekend, Louie Eckhardt, trumpet!

Dr. Louie Eckhardt is currently Assistant Professor of Music and Chair of the Department of Music and Theatre at Hastings College in Hastings, NE. At HC, he teaches applied brass, music theory and history, conducting, and directs the Hastings College Band. Dr. Eckhardt is currently principal trumpet of the Hastings Symphony Orchestra, principal trumpet of the Monroe, Louisiana Symphony Orchestra, and the Cathedral Brass Quintet. He has also performed with the Louisiana Philharmonic Orchestra, Acadiana Symphony Orchestra, Baton Rouge Symphony Orchestra, Cheyenne Symphony Orchestra, Boulder Chamber Orchestra, Greeley Philharmonic Orchestra, Rapides Symphony Orchestra, Nittany Valley Symphony Orchestra, and the Altoona Symphony Orchestra. He is the founder and Artistic Director of the INTEGERS New Music Series in Nebraska, and has been a featured artist at the New Music on the Bayou Festival in Louisiana.

Dr. Eckhardt holds a B.M. in Music Education and Trumpet Performance from Hastings College, an M.M. in Trumpet Performance from The Pennsylvania State University, and a Doctor of Musical Arts degree in Trumpet Performance at Louisiana State University. He has studied trumpet with Daniel Schmidt, Langston J. Fitzgerald, III, and Brian Shaw. He has also studied with Denny Schneider, Keith Benjamin, John Thiessen, Charles Lirette, and Vance Woolf.

Meet our soloist for this weekend’s concert:

A Nebraska native, Nathan LeFeber received a Bachelor’s degree in Music Education from the University of Nebraska at Lincoln and a Master’s degree in Trombone Performance from the University of Iowa at Iowa City. He has been teaching instrumental music since 2003, most recently at Kearney High School where he has been ‘enriching lives through music’ since 2011. Prior to that, Mr. LeFeber taught band at Beatrice High School and Lincoln Christian School. From 2011-2014, Mr. LeFeber served as Chair of Band Affairs for the Nebraska Music Educators Association and is currently serving as President of the Nebraska chapter of Phi Beta Mu, an honorary band directors fraternity. He has worked as an adjudicator for many high school and middle school music contests as well as serving as a guest conductor for numerous honor bands across the state, including the Class B and Class C All-State bands.

In addition to his teaching schedule, Mr. LeFeber has also performed on trombone with a number of professional ensembles including the Quad City Symphony, Cedar Rapids Symphony, Lincoln Municipal Band, Nebraska Jazz Orchestra, Kearney Symphony Orchestra, Hastings Symphony, Plymouth Brass, Flatwater Jazz Orchestra, and the Kearney Jazz Society. For the past several summers, he has toured Germany with the German/American 12-piece brass ensemble, Eurobrass. Mr. LeFeber is passionate about imparting his love of music, faith, and family into the lives of his students. He has been married to his high school sweetheart, Julie, for nearly two decades, and they have 4 children: Evelyn, Sylvia, Abraham, and Mordecai.

Nate is a junior clarinet performance major at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln under Dr. Diane Barger. He has played in a variety of ensembles on and off campus such as the UNL Symphony Orchestra and the Peru Area Wind Ensemble. Additionally, Nate is an active member of the International Clarinet Association, traveling to Nevada, Denver, and even Ireland this summer. He is also representing his studio by attending the Buffet Crampon Clarinet Academy this summer in Jacksonville, Florida after taking part in the festival last year.

The Foundation Garden Performance Series is excited to present its 2024 season as well as celebrate its 50th anniversary! The series will present concerts on Wednesdays from May 22nd through September 18th. All performances will be held from 12:00-1:00 pm at the Lincoln Community Foundation Garden (1415 N Street) with the exception of the Give to Lincoln Day performance on Thursday, May 30, which will be held at the Lincoln Community Foundation Tower Square at the corner of 13th street and P street. All concerts are free and open to the public. We can't wait to see you at our first concert on Wednesday, May 22nd!

This weekend's concert will feature two chamber ensembles: the Navy Band Great Lakes "Fairwinds" Woodwind Quintet and the Nebraska Brass!

"The Navy Band Great Lakes Woodwind Quintet "Fairwinds" is composed of traditional instrumentation for this particular ensemble. Fairwinds supports Military Ceremonies, and Public Outreach Performances around our home station of Great Lakes Illinois, and within our 11 State Area of Responsibility in the Midwestern United States. This particular iteration of Fairwinds Musicians have been playing together in this ensemble since January of 2023 with the most Junior member of the group being in the Navy for 2 and a half years, and the most senior being in the Navy for 10 years. The Musicians of Fairwinds are Musician Second Class Stefan Lang on Bassoon, Musician Second Class T'anna Tercero on French Horn, Musician Third Class Kristen Alberty on Flute, Musician Third Class Brandon Pace on Clarinet, and Musician Third Class Wei Wang on Oboe. The Nebraska Brass has reached audiences in communities throughout the state since 1987, presenting a five-concert series each season in multiple cities. The ensemble performs a variety of literature and commissions new works for brass quintet, preserving and promoting this valuable art form. They have also released seven recordings. Their most recent CD is “Blowout,” which features pieces commissioned by the Nebraska Brass.

Educating students is also a priority for the Nebraska Brass, and through the educational outreach program, Brass Goes to School, the ensemble has reached thousands of students in the past 15 years. This program places the Nebraska Brass in Lincoln and Omaha area schools, where they perform exciting and age-appropriate music, provide informative commentary about the music, and field a variety of questions.

The Nebraska Brass is comprised of musicians with a wealth of experience in both classical and commercial idioms. Members have performed with ensembles such as the Omaha Symphony Orchestra, Lincoln's Symphony Orchestra, Nebraska Jazz Orchestra, Dallas Symphony, Chicago Symphony Orchestra, and Mannheim Steamroller. Members have also toured and performed throughout the United States, Europe, South America, Japan, Australia and the Caribbean with numerous musical ensembles. In addition to their busy performing schedules, members of the Nebraska Brass are experienced as educators who are presently teaching in Nebraska and Iowa public schools and at Nebraska Wesleyan University and University of Nebraska, Lincoln.

Donna Rae (Powell) Gill - Roper and Sons 08/14/2023

We are saddened by the passing of former Lincoln Municipal Band board President Donna Gill. Donna followed her husband Don Gill as President after he passed away and both are missed and remembered fondly by many friends here in Lincoln. After retiring from the board and before moving to Utah to be closer to family, Donna could be found every Sunday evening at the concerts in Antelope Park, greeting people as they entered from the parking lot and passing out programs. The Lincoln Municipal Band was lucky to have the help and support of these two wonderful people for so many years.

Meet our soloist for this weekend’s concert: Bo Atlas!

Atlas is sought after as a soloist and chamber musician and has received many accolades for his solo work including recent premiere performances of Tyler White's new Tuba Concerto "Resilience" with the UNL Symphony Orchestra. Equally comfortable with Orchestra, Wind Ensemble, or Brass Band his solo work includes performances of Martin Ellerby's Tuba Concerto with the Hastings Symphony Orchestra, Carnival of Venice with the Lincoln Municipal Band, and Paul-Lovatt Cooper's "Quicksilver" with the Free State Brass Band.

Meet our soloist for this weekend’s concert: Kevin Kroon!

Kevin, a native of Lincoln, attended Lincoln Northeast High School and went on to receive a Bachelor of Science degree in education from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. Kevin has taught private drum and percussion lessons for Dietze Music since 1985, and he also works full time in music sales for Dietze Music. He began playing professionally in 1975 and has played with many different types of musical groups and in diverse styles, some of which include the Lincoln Symphony Orchestra, Nebraska Chamber Orchestra, Plymouth Brass, and the Shrine Circus. Kevin has been a clinician and adjudicator for the Lincoln Public Schools and is an adjunct percussion instructor at Union College. After over 36 years, Kevin retired from the 43rd Army Band of the Nebraska National Guard with the rank of Sergeant First Class. His duties and positions included: Band Staff, Percussion Group Leader, Supervisor of the Sound Reinforcement Team and director of the 43rd’s rock/pop small group “Prairie Fire.”
