Jocelyn Peña was 1 of 30 students across the country selected as an American Heart Association Hispanic Student Institutions (HSI) Scholar for the Class of 2022-2023! 👏

Jocelyn, who will be graduating this spring with a degree in Health Science - Community Health and School Health Education, had the opportunity to conduct research, learn and work with health care professionals, and connect with other students who are working hard to overcome the barriers of being first generation.

Did you know that in addition to his teaching duties, CSULB Professor Dr. Kamiar Alaei and his brother Dr. Arash Alaei are helping to aid the humanitarian crisis in Iran? They are providing telehealth visits to protestors in Iran who are being brutally treated for standing up against women's rights injustices in the region.

Rachel Posteraro was one of 50 Teachers chosen to attend “Disney Imagination Campus 50 Teachers Celebration!” Rachel graduated in 2020 with a B.S. in Kinesiology – Physical Education/Teacher Education with a Minor in Dance.

Rachel met educators from all over the country and got to experience inspiring sessions led by Disney leaders and imagineers and attended special entertainment events at the park, including a celebratory parade at Magic Kingdom.

Middle and high school students from A Step Beyond, a nonprofit organization providing underserved youth and their families with free academic support and social services, visited CSULB and the College of Health and Human Services last week.

The students were able to learn about their academic and career opportunities while exploring the various labs offered through CHHS, including the School of Nursing simulation lab and the Fashion Design Lab, Food Science Lab, and Nutrition lab from the Department of Family and Consumer Sciences.

Congrats to CHHS Faculty Member Dr. Joshua Cotter and his students' Exercise is Medicine On Campus Team (EIM-OC)! They were recently honored by the global organization Exercise is Medicine in conjunction with the American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM) for their efforts to create a culture of wellness on campus, and bringing awareness to CSULB about the importance of exercise as a daily health benefit! The student organization earned gold level distinction for the Outstanding Marketing Award, gold distinction for the Beach Wellness Award, and silver distinction for the Outstanding Organization of the Year!

Dr. Lucy Huckabay has made a profound impact at California State University, Long Beach and the community during her 43 years working here.

She has served as the School of Nursing Director for 21 years and although she is stepping away from this role, Dr. Huckabay will continue to make a difference as she joins the Department of Health Science in the Fall to work with Dr. Kamiar Alaei to create the Western Regional Collaborative Center for the World Health Organization (WHO).

In April, the College of Health and Human Services had the opportunity to participate in Long Beach Unified School District’s first-ever Black Student Achievement Initiative Symposium. The Initiative aims to promote excellence and equity for students who may need the extra guidance and support to succeed.

CHHS, specifically the School of Nursing and the Department of Health Care Administration, Kinesiology, Speech-Language Pathology, and Public Policy & Administration, had a table at the event where they were able to provide students and their families with information and resources about the college.

Camp Nugget has served thousands of children with disabilities and provides small group instruction by university students enrolled in the Kinesiology Department who are studying to receive an Adapted Physical Education Teaching Credential.

Jana Elias, Israel Bernal, Brittany Thomas, and Nicolas Rahe are a few of the hard working KIN students who are serving their community while also gaining valuable experience toward their future careers.
