The Freedom Writers Story
In the 1990s, Erin Gruwell's diverse and beautiful class named themselves the Freedom Writers in honor of the Freedom Riders of the 1960s Civil Rights Movement. Initially labeled "deadbeats" and "drop outs" by other teachers and school administrators, Ms. G's students dedicated themselves to bringing about social change by writing of their experiences in the New York Times Best-seller The Freedom Writers Diary. Their deeply personal accounts of poverty, discrimination, gang violence, and other serious topics cast a light on issues faced by youth that are too often ignored by the world at large, both then and now.
After the Freedom Writers graduated in 1998, they created the Freedom Writers Foundation to carry on their message of tolerance, hope, and the power of storytelling to change the world. Ms. G and the Freedom Writers now host teacher trainings; speak at live events in schools, businesses, and organizations in all fifty states and around the world; create curriculum to help teachers reach every student, no matter their race, creed, or background; and provide scholarships to first-generation high school graduates across the country.
They have also released several other books about their story and have a gripping documentary set to debut on PBS in Spring 2019. Ms. G and the Freedom Writers are so humbled that their story has been told in a variety of formats, and they are continuing to create new content that can serve teachers and students everywhere.
