**📸✨ Exciting Highlights from the Bausch and Lomb Cataract Technology Summit! ✨📸**

Last weekend, I enjoyed the privilege of being invited faculty and attending the Bausch and Lomb Cataract Technology Summit in beautiful La Jolla. The event was a resounding success, bringing together a rockstar panel of leading experts and innovators in the field of ophthalmology. 🌟

The summit showcased groundbreaking advancements in cataract surgery, featuring state-of-the-art IOL (intraocular lens) technology that promises to enhance patient outcomes significantly. Along with my good friend Paul Singh, I was also thrilled to share data on MIMS and MINT the new platforms from Sanoculis which B&L has joined forces with to expand our options for minimally invasive glaucoma surgery (MIGS) procedures. These innovative techniques are set to revolutionize the way we manage and treat glaucoma, offering patients safer and more effective options. 🔬✨

A huge thank you to Bausch and Lomb for hosting such an inspiring event and to all the speakers and attendees for their invaluable contributions. The future of eye care is brighter than ever! 🌅🔍

Day 2 part 1. The main reason we are here in Yerevan is to work with great friends (and new friends) on an exciting new technology for the treatment of refractory glaucoma. The team from Sanoculis (Khan Lau, Nir Israeli, Elad Shalev and Adam Tarif) along with our host surgeon Lilit Voskanyan at the Malayan Eye Clinic. A truly amazing experience doing surgery with several of the best glaucoma surgeons in the US: Inder Paul Singh, Manjool Shah, Brian Flowers and George Reiss ( Eva Liang and Davinder Grover operated yesterday). Phenomenal experience and appreciative patients alike.

Dear friends and family,

We are mourning the loss of my dad, whom we laid to rest this past Friday.

Here is my Eulogy:

Rabbi Harold M. Schulweis once said, "The true meaning of life is to plant trees, under whose shade you do not expect to sit." My Dad, understood this truth and spent his life planting trees of love, compassion, and generosity that will continue to bear fruit for generations to come.

As a father, my dad made sure we experienced secular life, hiking at Vasquez Rocks, Chaperoning School Trips to Yosemite and Catalina, Scalping tickets to watch and support his beloved Dodgers, Ski trips all over the West, weekends in Palm Desert or at the Sand & Sea Beach club, playing tennis and golf together, and even taking Charles and I to Ice Hockey practice at 5 am (only after stopping at Winchell’s for fresh out of the oven Boston Cream Filled donuts (his favorite until the end).

More importantly my dad believed in Judaism and Tikun Olam (Healing the World)

This week's Parsha, Tazria Metzorah, which also happens to be my Bar Mitzvah Parsha, strangely enough is focused on healthcare and befitting of honoring my dad as a physician. Briefly, the torah portion discusses the laws of purification after childbirth and the treatment of leprosy. It is kind of surreal in this Post Pandemic age that the Torah instructs us to be mindful of our physical health and well-being, and to take steps to prevent the spread of disease. More importantly, the Parsha teaches the importance of community support. The metzorah, or person with leprosy, was isolated from the community to prevent the spread of the disease. However, the community was also responsible for helping the metzorah regain their place in society once they were healed. While our family is grieving the loss of my dad “David ben Moshe” today, I am humbled by the support you all have provided our family throughout the challenges my dad endured over the past 10 years as he fought through a variety of illness, pain and mental decline. Lastly, the Parsha also emphasizes the importance of spiritual and emotional healing. The purification rituals in the Parsha were not just about physical cleanliness, but also about spiritual renewal and personal growth.

My dad was a truly spiritual being. For as long as I can remember, my dad found joy in torah study and honoring the traditions of our ancestors. Saturdays, we attended services at Valley Beth Shalom where my dad always prepared and participated in lively discussions with Rabbi Schulweis followed by a continuation at the Silverberg’s home for lunch and further torah study with several VBS families. After we were grown and out of the house, he continued to regularly attend Rabbi Feinstein’s weekly Torah Study classes at VBS and Rabbi Zwary’s classes at El Cab. All the way to the end, unable to physically attend, my mom and dad would tune in on-line every Saturday morning to hear the Rabbi’s message.

As children, not only did we go to shul on a weekly basis, from an early age our dad taught my brother Charles and I to look beyond the surface of what we were reading and search for the underlying messages that brought valuable life lesions. Friday nights we would sit down for Shabbat dinner, after which my dad would read us a story from various Jewish authors like Chiam Potok or Issac Beshevis Singer’s The Wise men from Chelm (the Jewish version of Asop’s Fables), then ask us questions about the meaning and morals of the stories. As adolescents that graduated into weekly book reports on classic American literature or Current events to supplement what he though was a lack of critical thinking and homework from our teachers. While it seemed unfair at first, I grew to appreciate and learn a great deal about life from our discussions that have fueled my devotion to lifelong learning and teaching others.

In Jewish tradition, we often turn to the words of our sages to find comfort and guidance in times of grief. Like Rabbi Schulweis, Rashi, the great medieval commentator on the Torah, teaches us that the true measure of a person is not in their possessions or accomplishments, but in the good that they do for others. My Dad lived this ideal throughout his life. He was a giant in the Jewish community of Los Angeles, A devoted Husband, Father, Grandfather, Mentor, and Healer. I am reminded daily by our loyal and devoted office team, several of whom had the fortune to work with my dad for 20+ years, and our patients who respected my dad’s kindness, and expertise as a Physician and Eye Surgeon. I will forever cherish, the honor and privilege of working together with him. His passion for teaching was achieved through many hours as volunteer faculty at the Jules Stein Eye Institute. I am constantly reminded by many of our colleagues who remember and appreciate the valuable skills and pearls he shared throughout his career. My dad also firmly believed that everyone deserved access to affordable excellent education taught by the best educators from around the world. This was a fundamental concept that sparked my interest in, and hope to achieve, through the e-learning platform we are building at Alchemy Vision.

In closing, Cat Stevens' "Cats in the Cradle," is a song about the importance of cherishing time with loved ones. So often I reflect on this underlying theme. As Children we often do not understand the complexities of Parenthood and the sacrifices our parents make to provide for our families. As parents we become enlightened to those facts and grow to truly appreciate them. Karen, Shaina, Nikki, Justin and I have been blessed to have so many great memories of time spent with both my mom and dad. My Dad's life was a beautiful example of this theme. As a devoted father and grandfather who always made time for his family, even while juggling the demands of his professional life. May we all continue to honor his wishes and devotion to Tikun Olam, healing the world.

Poppy, may your soul rest in peace, and your memory be a blessing to us all.

Presbyopia often occurs around the age of 40. It is a common eye condition refering to the lack of ability to focus on objects up close. There are multiple ways to correct presbyopia. If you are experiencing blurred vision when reading or looking at your phone, it may be a sign to get your eyes checked for presbyopia👁️

This week’s tip: When it comes to finding talent, your website should be professional and up to date and showcase work culture, presenting photos of doctors/staff and patient testimonials. Tracking and encouraging positive reviews is also key. Sites such as Yelp and Google My Business allow patients to rank their experience. Social media also provides potential employees insight into your practice’s environment.
