The Impact of Self-Regulation on Learning
Emotional Competence forms the basis for Self-Regulation, which is a person’s ability to control and manage his or her own emotions, thoughts, and behaviors. Self-regulation evolves out of a process known as Co-Regulation. Co-regulation is the warm and responsive interactions by the significant caregiver that provide the support, coaching, and modeling that young children need to understand, express, and modulate their thoughts, feelings, and behavior.
• Housman Institute research has shown that children as young as preschool age
who develop skills of self-regulation are better able to focus, attend to, retain, and comprehend
complex concepts such as physics, astronomy, and mathematics.
• When a child is preoccupied with worries or big emotions and anxiety, their energy is no longer available to attend to learning.
• Children with poor emotional competencies and undeveloped self-regulation skills are at increased risk for low academic achievement; emotional, behavioral, and social problems; low self-esteem, peer rejection, and
school dropout.
• Children who can regulate intense emotions are better able to pay attention and perform the essential executive function skills of listening, concentrating, and problem-solving.
