Our facelift is almost complete in the Westchester Clinic. So happy with the work that has been done, and excited that Dr. Heidi Guiyab, DACM, LAc is now available to treat in the upgraded digs, under the ProviStar Acupuncture label. Stop by, meet Dr. Heidi and see the changes. Yes, I will continue to treat 1-2 days per week out of the Westchester location for the foreseeable future, while launching my new Orange County clinic.
The lobby is shaping up nicely with our new wood floors!
New signs, new floors, new look... now open Mon-Friday! Dr. D is available Monday and Friday & Dr. Heidi is available Tuesday through Friday. Give us a call! 310-338-0877!
Don't let the new signs fool you - beginning August 2021, our Westchester Location is now ProviStar Acupuncture. ReturningSpring IHS continues to operate out of our Truxton Location. However, I'm very pleased to announce that beginning September 2021, Dr. Heidi Guiyab, DACM, LAc will be taking over the mainstay of the practice in Westchester, continuing the tradition of personal care and compassion shown by Rachel Murphy and myself over the past 20 years. I will continue treating patients in Westchester on a limited basis (Mondays & Fridays) for the foreseable future. Over the next few weeks we will be undergoing renovations in the unit in preparations for the handoff. Keep posted for openhouse information later this summer!
To my friends, colleagues, patients and family... May the Year of the Ox bring the fortune and happiness that the old year didn't! To your health always!
Good advice. Stay healthy my friends.

In response to the State-wide Stay-at-Home Order, I have made the decision to temporarily take a break from treating regular patients. At this time, I believe the risks of treatment outweigh the benefit.
There’s a lot this medicine can do for patients that does not involve needles. I am available by phone, and Skype, for consultation, and can make suggestions and provide herbal supplements to help through this crisis.
We all need to be socially responsible. Small businesses like mine will be hurt in this mess, but that’s no excuse not to do the right thing.
I will also be available on a limited basis to treat urgent cases, following CDC-recommended hand-washing and sanitizing protocols. If you need an appointment, please call me to arrange a time. However, I urge you to follow the stay-at-home instructions, and wash your hands, often!
Let’s be responsible. The life you save may be your own.
Courtesy of a colleague of mine in PA. During this time of high stress and anxiety, always good to know a little acupressure... especially when you don’t have access to your favorite acupuncturist. Stay healthy my friends.
COVID-19 Update: The Governor and Mayor have announced that all non-essential services are to be closed. At this time my offices will remain open to treat those who need my services. Herbal medicines which have been shown to support recovery (based on reports from Wuhan) have been ordered, although in limited quantities. In the meantime, I hold you all up in my prayers and send you light and love. May this crisis pass quickly.
Please remember that small local businesses often operate on the slimmest of margins and an event like this can be catastrophic. Rent isn’t abated because of the Corona Virus/COVID-19. Employees must still be compensated and utility bills are still due. Buy some gift cards from small businesses. Buy some coffee from your local coffee shop. Buy some bulbs and seeds from your local garden center. Go grab a couple bottles of wine from your local liquor store.
We are in this together. Let’s make sure our local businesses feel some love during these difficult coming weeks.

Several folks have been asking me about the Corona Virus (COVID-19). As everyone is aware, the Corona virus (also known as COVID 19 or 2019-nCoV) has reached many countries including the United States. As of yesterday, California has 192 confirmed cases. The majority of these are in Northern California (San Matteo County). Only 28 cases have been found in Los Angeles County. As of March 11, Orange County has had 4 confirmed cases, and 2 presumptive cases. 5 of those cases were travel related, 1 of which was person-to-person contact (Orange County Health Care Agency Website). Further, Orange County Health Care Agency officials say the risk of contracting coronavirus is low in Orange County. The number of cases in China is decreasing which is implying a three-month cycle if all goes well.
The closure of public universities, and curtailment of large gatherings (more than 250 people) are a useful precaution. HOWEVER, folks need to recognize how the disease is spread. Remember, 80% of people will have mild symptoms and recover quickly. Children tend to have mild symptoms. People most at risk are the over-60s, those with underlying respiratory conditions (asthma, COPD, emphysema) or other chronic conditions (diabetes, heart disease, cancer).
Mostly through close contact with a sick person. The virus is spread via droplets from coughing and sneezing. It is not believed to be spread through the air ("aerosol") - you won't get sick from simply breathing the same air of a sick person. As such, theaters and grocery stores are minimal risk. Droplets land on surfaces, a person touches the surface then their nose, mouth or eyes. The virus only enters through one of these routes (nose, mouth or eyes). It is not known how long it survives on surfaces – it could be from a few hours to a few days. Disinfecting surfaces with disinfectant or soap and water will kill the virus.
The incubation period is commonly found to be between 2-14 days – typically 5 days. This is the time when a person has no symptoms and doesn’t know about it.
How do we protect ourselves?
The single most important thing is to wash our hands frequently or use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer. This is because the virus has a fatty envelope which is broken down by good old soap and water, or alcohol.
Wash hands for 20 seconds (the time it takes to sing Happy Birthday slowly!) Rub every surface of your hands including the backs and between your fingers.
Second – avoid touching your eyes, nose and mouth. This is easier said than done. We touch our faces more than 90 times a day. Face masks and glasses help you to avoid touching these areas. Otherwise the WHO does NOT recommend face masks.
Stay 3 feet away (WHO) or 6 feet (CDC) from a coughing person.
Don’t shake hands or otherwise touch people when you are out and about.
Clean surfaces that you regularly touch.
There is no treatment for corona virus, just rest and take care of yourself. Most people (80%) have mild symptoms. Serious infections are treated using support measures at hospitals. The WHO and other organizations are testing Western and traditional medicines to see if they will help. Antibiotics do not help because this is a virus. Antivirals+Herbal Medication is having some documented success in China... and we are seeing a decrease in cases.
Above all else - treat each other gently - and WASH YOUR HANDS!
Chinese herbs have shown good results in half of confirmed cases of Coronavirus. Don't underestimate the power of herbs!

China tries 3,000-year-old remedy on coronavirus patients A health official said that centuries-old traditional medicines were applied on more than half of confirmed cases which has shown some good results.

There's Mounting Evidence That Parkinson's Starts in The Gut - Not The Brain
More proof of the Gut-Brain Axis connection...
sciencealert.com Scientists have found mounting evidence that Parkinson's could start in the gut before spreading to the brain, with one study in 2017 observing lower rates of the disease in patients who had undergone a procedure called a truncal vagotomy.

Chronic inflammation removes motivation by reducing dopamine in the brain
Fascinating
news-medical.net Why do we feel listless when we are recovering from an illness? The answer is, apparently, that low-grade chronic inflammation interferes with the dopaminergic signaling system in the brain that motivates us to do things.
