Black Cat BBQ is a full service catering company operating in the Los Angeles area. Everyone who has tasted his cooking agrees, Phil can get down!
Come and see us at the Beverly Hills Farmers Market on Sundays, the Cedars Sinai Farmers Market on Wednesdays, and the Westwood Village Farmers Market in Thursdays!! Started by Phil Martin, the company specializes in bringing the finest smoked meats and Southern comfort food to the people of Southern California. What distinguishes Black Cat BBQ from its competitors is Phil's extensive background i
So, I was at the kitchen this morning, washing dishes and such, getting ready for Sunday, and my van got stolen. Unfortunately, it was full of all of my equipment and market setup. Including the van, we're talking about $12,000 worth of gear. To say the least, I'm devastated. I filed a police report, but considering the size of our city, I'm not real confident that anything will be done.
One of my favorite songs has the chorus "ain't nothin gonna break my stride, ain't nothin gonna hold me down, OH NO, I've got to keep on movin!!!" and I'm going to do my darnedest to get to the market on Sunday. I'll rent a van, piece together a set up and try to keep things moving. We'll have the regular menu, God willing.
If you're planning on ordering catering for Thanksgiving, I would appreciate it if you would put that order in asap. As well, if you're able, I could use a donation to help get through this situation. Whatever you can do will greatly help.
Lastly, Sunday is daylight savings time, so remember to set your clocks back an hour. If I haven't mentioned it, I hate daylight savings time.

Let's Get Ready to Rumble!!
It's that time of year again. Time for family, football, and food! And that means it's turkey time. This will be Thanksgiving #8 for us and we're going big. In years past, I've tried to keep my order count somewhat limited, but not this year. This year, I'm taking all comers, with the exception of the Better Than Honeybaked Hams, those are still limited in quantity. Everything else on the menu will be plentiful!
Something new for this year, we will be partnering with Sum Sweet Bakery to add a dessert menu. I've worked with the owner, Taylor Eaton for a few years now and she is the best there is. You folks who had our food at the DGA events in the last year can attest, her desserts are no joke. She'll be making Pumpkin Pies, Sweet Potato Pies and Pumpkin Spice Bundt Cakes. You can add those to your orders and either pick them up in East Los Angeles, or have them delivered.
We're changing up our delivery policy. Because I now have a place available for pick ups, delivery is no longer free. Pickups are free, but deliveries will now cost an additional $25. As well, I am now charging sales tax. I gotta pay it, you gotta pay it.

We Got Something Special For Sunday!
It’s been almost a month since I’ve seen some of your faces. Thank you to everyone who sends emails and texts to stay in touch. I really do appreciate that. But now, I look forward to seeing you guys in person.
Yesterday, we made our return to the Westwood Village Farmers Market (say that 5 times fast). I saw a few folks from the old days, which was awesome. We also started selling out of stuff in the first hour. I guess that part of town needs some bbq, ha! Don’t worry, we’ll come strong next week.
I’m sorry that I missed out on Rosh Hashana, but last week was crazy for me, but I’ve got some good stuff planned for the end of the Yom Kippur fast. This Sunday, we’ll have all of the regulars available, including beef back ribs. We will have the famous Pulled Lamb (just like pulled pork, but lamb). And this Sunday, Phil’s house made, all beef sausages make their debut. I’ve been working on them for a while and I can’t wait to share them with you guys.
Side note, I’m new to sausage making, so mine will not look like the pictures for a while. But, they’ll taste good!
Phil

This Email Is Long
Hey Ya'll,
I got a lot of info to share because I got a lot going on these days. This past Sunday we participated in the Heritage Fire Tour at the Westin Bonaventure Hotel. It was an amazing event and we did our thing. We did not win the competition, but I can assure, we brought our A game. We served Pork Belly Burnt Ends and Carolina Coleslaw (that's what I'm calling the coleslaw now). It was so much fun to have so many people say "I don't really like coleslaw, but this is amazing". We're out here saving souls ya'll! I
It was also great to see some familiar faces in the crowd. Maybe the city is starting to take notice of the hard work that we have been putting in for the last 7 years. It's about time!
We're Expanding!
We're back at the Westwood Village Farmers Market
First things first, after a 6 year hiatus, we will be returning to the Westwood Village Farmers Market. This market runs every Thursday from 12pm-5pm. I know that the picture below says 12-6pm, that's wrong. We'll be serving up all of your favorites!
Now that I've gotten through a huge string of events, we will be at all of our weekly farmers market for the foreseeable future. That now includes the following:
Sundays-the Beverly Hills Farmers Market g.co/kgs/bAVW6SD
Wednesdays-the Cedars Sinai Farmers Market farmhabit.com/cedars (https://www.farmhabit.com/cedars)
Thursdays-the Westwood Village Farmers Market g.co/kgs/CTpRQus
Saturdays-TBA
Because this schedule is kinda rigorous, I will not physically be at the markets anymore. I will swing by from time to time, but I have a solid crew that will be handling service. If you want to preorder, you will need to make that order by email, at least 48 hours in advance. I will then send you an invoice that you can pay with a card. That's the only way that it's going to work. If you call or text me an order, more than likely, it's not going to get fulfilled. I apologize for the inconvenience.
Thanksgiving Catering Menu.
I've been getting lots of inquiries about Thanksgiving catering. I thought that it was a little early for that, but I was wrong. I'll be sending that out later this week. Keep an eye out for that!
We're Now Making Our Own Sausages!
We're now making our own all beef hot links. Don't let the name scare you off, they are not spicy. Next week, I'll give you the history of the dish, but for now, you can just eat em!
Price changes
It's been almost 3 years since I last changed my prices and I can't go any further. The changes are quite conservative as compared to my competitors. As well, I am also now charging sales tax. I gotta pay it, so you gotta pay it.

This post is kind of long!
Again, I apologize for our spotty attendance at the Beverly Hills Farmers Market over the past couple of months. We’re starting to get recognized for the work we’ve been putting in on the mean streets of Beverly Hills. Unfortunately, I can’t seem to get the media come out to the market to check us out. Uggh.
Side note, next week, we’ll start taking orders for Thanksgiving. A lot of you guys have been asking and I will open the ordering. Stay tuned!
We were on the news this week!
Heritage Fire Tour DTLA
Tomorrow, we’ll be participating in the Heritage Fire Tour at the Westin Bonaventure Hotel in downtown. It’s food and wine festival, celebrating SoCal’s hottest chefs. All of the chefs will be cooking with live fire, which is right up our alley.

We were on KTLA on Monday!
The Heritage Fire Tour folks sent me and another chef to KTLA to talk about tomorrow’s event. I was sure to mention all of the farmers markets that we participate in. I served the dish I plan to cook for the event and they seemed to like it. I’m cooking up a pork Belly Burnt Ends. Here is a link to that interview if you’re interested.

Shift Meal - The Ringer Shift Meal on The Ringer
We just had to share!
First things first, thank you to everyone who has supported me, my business, and my family over the years. It’s because of you, that we’re still in business. I say this all the time, but you are the real MVP’s (most valuable people).
In March of this year, I was interviewed by Danny Chau, for the Ringer Food Podcast. Danny is a James Beard Award nominated journalist. Formerly based in Los Angeles, he now resides in Toronto, CA. His new show on the Ringer podcast network, is called Shift Meal. They chose to start the new show with my interview. You can listen or watch thought this link. Warning, I say one or two cuss words.

There is a lot to share!
First things first, now that the heat has subsided, we’re back to our regularly scheduled program. We’ll be back in our spot and we’ve got those beef back ribs that everyone loves. As well, since I haven’t seen you guys in a while, I’m bringing pulled lamb! That’s right. Pulled lamb shoulder is on the specials menu this week only. Be sure and stop by Mom’s Mediterranean Products and pick up some tzatziki and make yourself one of the best gyros ever!
I was interviewed for a podcast owned by Spotify.
The Ringer Food Podcast
A few months ago, I sat down with Danny Chau (James Beard Award Winner) to talk about the BBQ boom in LA. We talked about my family, how I came to be a vendor at the Beverly Hills Farmers Market, my approach to cooking, and blah blah blah. It will be available to stream on all major podcast players on Wednesday 9/18/24 (that was an awkward sentence to write). They took some video, so it will be available on YouTube as well.
Beverly Hills Next Night Street Festival
We’ve been asked to be a featured vendor (their words, not mine) at the Beverly Hills Next Night Street Festival on Saturday, September 28. We’re the only “non restaurant” (sad) that was invited to participate. Apparently, they usually have food trucks in addition to the restaurants on S Beverly Dr, but the restaurant owners complained and the food trucks got the axe. Seeing as they had over 5000 people attend last years festival, that’s more people than the restaurants can handle. So, the folks who are planning this event, put up the “BBQ Bat Signal” to summon me for help. I’m not making this up, they actually have a bbq bat signal that summons me to help in bbq emergencies. You would be shocked at how often that happens.
Anyway, they have booked the 80’s band Bow Wow Wow (I want candy) as the headliner. They’ve also got an AABA tribute band and DJ straight from Las Vegas. I’m really looking forward to seeing Bow Wow Wow! For more information check the link below.

Heritage Fire Festival
On Sunday, October 6, we’ll be competing in the Heritage Fire Festival at the Bonaventure Hotel in DTLA. We’ll be competing against other chefs including some who have Michelin Stars. The folks who put on this festival are the same people who put on the LA Wine and Food Festival this past March. If you’re interested in coming and cheering us on, as well as sampling everyone else’s dishes, there is a discount code below. General admission includes all the food you can eat (until it runs out) and all of the booze that you can drink. Tickets start at $125 and my discount code will get you 20% off. Strap in, I have lot of information to share!!
First things first, we will not be at the Beverly Hills Farmers Market this Sunday 9/8/24. It’s supposed to be over 100° in Beverly Hills on Sunday. End of story. We’ll see ya next week.
Beverly Hills Next Night Street Festival
Saturday, September 28.
The city of Beverly Hills and the folks at Next Beverly Hills have asked us to participate in this event.
Some of you guys already know that this event is huge. Definitely the largest event that we’ve ever participated in. Last year’s event had an estimated attendance of 5000 people. That’s biblical!
Because this is a Saturday evening event, we will not be at the Farmers Market the following day. I apologize in advance.
For more information, here’s a link to the city if Beverly Hills website.

Heritage Fire Festival
In March of this year, we participated in the LA Wine and Food Festival. We were told that we were the most popular booth for the entire weekend. Well, the presenters of that festival have created a competition so that it can be proven once and for all. We’ve been invited to compete on Sunday October 6 in the parking lot of the Bonaventure Hotel downtown. How the competition works, the invited “chefs” (eye roll) will make a dish for festival attendees to sample. Attendees will then vote for their favorite bite. Real scientific. The winner gets a wooden plaque and bragging rights. Other competitors, Heritage BBQ of San Juan Capistrano, the only California bbq restaurant with a Michelin star. Needless to say, I plan on bringing my A game because I’m not coming to lose. I’ll be testing dishes in the coming weeks.
If you’re interested in coming to this event, you can pre-order your tickets with the discount code BLACKCATBBQ. General admission is $125 and VIP is $175. You read those numbers right.
heritagefiretour.com/tour-dates/los-angeles-ca (https://www.heritagefiretour.com/tour-dates/los-angeles-ca)
As well, we’ll be missing that Sunday’s market. I apologize in advance.
Turn and face the strange Ch-ch-changes
($3 discount to anyone who can name that song!)
I started this business in 2017 and I’ve always cooked the bbq at my house and I’ve always done everything else at a commissary kitchen. This set up has not been ideal, but my chosen style of cooking has made it an inherent pain in the tuchas. As most of you know, I’ve hoped to start my own restaurant, and before Covid struck, I was on my way. I’m not going to cry over spilled milk, because that’ll probably drive me crazy.
Moving forward, I’m going to doing the next best thing. I’ve found a commissary kitchen in East LA that will let me bring my smoker, so we'll be moving in there in the coming weeks. We will be adding a few more farmers markets, and more opportunities for folks to buy our food. I’m excited about this change, but I’m also scared. Stay tuned for other changes.

I’ve missed seeing your faces!
Again i apologize for my spotty attendance over the past 2 weeks, but I have weathered a storm (personally). Side note, if anyone has the number of a person who does concrete, me and the wife are in need. Also heads up, we (the entire Black Cat BBQ team) are about to undergo a major transition. In the coming months, we are going to be expanding the operation. We are not opening an actual restaurant, but we will be doing the next best thing. We are going to be adding more farmers markets to our weekly schedule and in the very near future, we’ll be in some of those delivery apps. Stay tuned for locations, where, and when. In the meantime, you can still catch us every Sunday at the Beverly Hills Farmers Market and every Wednesday at the Cedars Sinai Farmers Market.
Another note about our attendance on Sundays at the Beverly Hills Farmers Market. We have been invited to 2 incredible events in September and October. We have been invited to participate in the Beverly Hills Next Night Street Festival on Saturday, September 28. And we have been invited to compete in the Heritage Fire Tour at the Bonaventure Hotel on Sunday October 6. I’ll have more details about these events in the coming weeks, and I apologize for my absences in advance.
It looks like the weather forecast for tomorrow is doing to be glorious. We will have our regular menu on deck and I hope to see all of your shining faces.

National Night Out Was Bananas
Thank you thank you thank you to everyone who came out to the National Night Out sponsored by the Beverly Hills Police Department. We sold out of everything in 2 hours, holy moly! I don’t know what else to say about that. Sheesh!
So, I learned a huge lesson last night. I am going to be putting the Beef Back Ribs on the menu permanently, starting Sunday. I apologize for not doing that sooner. The pricing will be as follows:
Beef Back Ribs
Full Rack (7 Bones) $65
Half Rack. (4 bones) $35
Beef Ribs Meal (3 bones) $30
Kitty cat drama:
So, now with the addition of Josie and Reggie, we now have 4 black cats, including Isaac (16 yrs old) and Franklin (5 yrs old). Isaac managed to get out sometime on Friday and we didn’t realize it until early Saturday morning. Being that it was 4am, there wasn’t much that we could do until the sun came up. Also, we live on the side of a hill and our neighborhood is crawling with coyotes.
The sun came up, Isaac was nowhere to be found. Several hours went by and still no Isaac. In our minds, me and the wife were ready to plan his funeral. Around 10am, we heard a cat scream down the street. The wife gasps, thinking it was him. So, I go running out the house yelling for Isaac, like an idiot. I make another round on the yard and I see a shadow underneath one of trees. I steel my nerves in case I’m looking at a dead Isaac. Luckily, it was a sleeping Isaac. That little rascal was taking a nap.
Being that we have so many coyotes, and hawks, and fast moving cars, in the neighborhood, Isaac probably saw some things that he was trying to sleep off. But, he’s still alive, uninjured, frisky, and vocal. Alls well that ends well.
Can’t wait to see y’all on Sunday!

I got called a California Sissy, ha!
S Carolina is very humid!
So, I'm back from vacation in S Carolina and I'm ready to cook. I got a chance to hang out with my family a little bit and I cooked up some of the same bbq that I cook for you guys. Which was nice. The average humidity was around 75% and it was awful. Luckily all of the activities were indoors.
Me and my brother went out to breakfast on Friday and an older couple was seated nest to us. He asked where I was from because he couldn't place our accents. My brother told him that he lived in Colorado and I live in California. The guy said "I guess you're a cowboy and he's a sissy". I said "sir, would you like be on the news today?" If you don't know what I meant with my comment, ask me.
The picture below is from L to R
Me, my brother LaMont, my mom, my sister in law, their grandson, their grand daughter, my niece, and her BF.
New Kitties
The Black Cat BBQ team just gained 2 new members. Meet Carl and Gary and don't ask me which one is which. I picked them up yesterday and they almost identical. I'm taking them to the vet this morning, so I should be able to get a better look at them then. So. now we have 4 black cats and I think that officially makes me the crazy cat lady. I'll wear that badge with honor.
Picklefest!
Picklefest is on August 4th at the Beverly Hills Farmers' Market and we’re looking for contestants for the Pickling contest. There are 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place prizes in two different categories so there is a good chance that you will be a winner!
