The Swiss Guard are a specialty armed force who protect the pope, and they've been doing so since 1506. The historic full-dress uniform is a fan-favorite of visitors to the Vatican.
Servant of God Darwin Ramos, a poor Filipino boy, died from muscular dystrophy at the age of 17. Never brought low by the disease, he spoke of his illness as his “mission for Jesus.” Many were blessed by his smile and compassionate friendship. He was known as the Master of Joy.
QUESTION OF THE WEEK — Despite opposition from those who knew Jesus and his family personally, Jesus offered eternal life to all who believe in him. How can someone remain open to new or challenging ideas?
We look forward to this celebration! Please join us!
This Sunday we hear Jesus tell us that He is the living bread that came down from heaven. His actions, His example, His teachings — they are not just words on a page, stories from a moth-eaten history book. They are life. They are food for our journey, and they are forever. See you at Mass!
Prayer of Hunger —Dear Jesus, You are the one who fed the hungry. But your work doesn’t only exist on the pages of an old book. You’re working now. Work in us, to bring food to those in need. Work in us, to satisfy the places we most need you. Amen.
St. Martin de Porres (1579- 1639) was the first Black saint of the Americas. He had a great love of the Eucharist and was known for caring equally for all regardless of race or status. He founded an orphanage and school and even cared for the mice and rats at his monastery.
Today is the Feast of the Transfiguration of the Lord! May we never loose sight of God's glory today and every day of our lives. Thank you for revealing Yourself to us, Jesus. Amen.
INSPIRATION FOR THE WEEK--Jesus reminds his followers: “Do not work for food that perishes, but for the food that endures for eternal life.” We are so often distracted by the world before us, by the here and now. Let us not forget what is eternal. We were made for what is eternal.
This weekend at Mass we hear about Jesus teaching the crowds in Capernaum that he is “the bread of life” who feeds all who believe in him. Is there someone you know hungry for Jesus?
August is the Month of the Immaculate Heart of Mary. Feel free to come in and light a candle for Mary!
St. Katharine Drexel (1858–1955), is one of the first American-born saints. Giving up her inheritance, she founded a religious order which established 63 schools and 50 missions for African and Native Americans, including Xavier University of Louisiana.
QUESTION OF THE WEEK — After Jesus fed the crowds with the multiplication of loaves and fish, he withdrew to the mountain alone. When do you find the need to be alone?
INSPIRATION FOR THE WEEK — “Where can we buy enough food for them to eat?” Jesus asks Philip, testing him. And so, too, he asks us: “Where do you go when you are hungry? Afraid? Dejected? Confused?” Let us always answer: “Jesus. Jesus is where we can find what we need.”
In this Sunday's readings, we hear about the miracle of the loaves and fishes. "Then Jesus took the loaves, gave thanks, and distributed them to those who were reclining, and also as much of the fish as they wanted." (Jn 6:11) See you at Mass!
St. Angela of Foligno (c. 1248–1309), sometimes called the “Teacher of Theologians,” Angela’s first life as a wife and mother gave her unique insights. Her path to sainthood was not through perfection but through penitence and charity. She experienced periods of certainty and doubt, temptation and steadfastness.
Last weekend, Paul taught the Ephesians that, in Jesus' death and resurrection, Jesus established peace and reconciliation between all believers, Jews, and Gentiles alike. How do you know you are at peace with a friend or loved one?
Prayer to the Shepherd —
My Good Shepherd, There are so many things I don’t understand about the paths where you lead and the pastures where you release me. But I believe that you are a Good Shepherd. I have known your protection and provision in so many ways. Please keep me under your care. Amen.
QUESTION OF THE WEEK — Although Jesus wanted the Twelve to rest after their successful mission of preaching and healing, the crowds of people made it challenging to do so. Who could you encourage this week to rest well from their hard work?
May he rest in peace!
Let us pray that the Sacrament of the Anointing of the Sick grant the Lord’s strength to those who receive it and to their loved ones, and that it may become for everyone an ever more visible sign of compassion and hope.
