Refractive error continues to be the largest cause of correctable visual impairment in the US.

's Founding Director, Dr. Rohit Varma, and his research team just published their findings analyzing the burden of uncorrected refractive error and unmet refractive need in African American individuals.

This cross-sectional study, which included eligible participants from the African American Eye Disease Study ( ), found refractive error-related correctable visual impairment was present in over two-thirds of participants.

These data suggest that with the relatively low cost and easily implementable intervention of refractive correction, like eyeglasses, it is possible to reduce this burden, potentially leading to an improvement in productivity and quality of life.
