In Part 1 of this series, the authors discuss the importance of supplemental support systems and cabling for structural vulnerabilities in trees. This article clarifies the new A300-2023 standards on cabling, distinguishing between proactive and reactive cabling, and covers the primary types of cabling systems, hardware options, tools, and installation steps. Proactive cabling prevents issues, while reactive cabling addresses existing problems. Dynamic cabling allows tree movement and requires regular inspections, whereas static cabling provides strong, rigid support. Proper installation and understanding of the standards ensure the effectiveness and safety of tree cabling systems.

The older tree workers, the 55-plus category, account for 29% of the fatal tree-worker incidents. The other tail of the demographic curve, the 24-year old or younger, is 20% of the workforce but accounts for only 5% of the fatal incidents. The middle demographic group, those tree workers between 35 and 44 years old, comprise about 18% of the workforce and 20% of the fatalities. Once tree workers reach about 40 years old, the fatality rate begins to increase.

On the heels of his recently published letter [ https://hubs.li/Q02MzvkL0 ] to the editor urging OSHA to act, Ben Tresselt sat down with TCIA CEO David White to discuss his business, Arborist Enterprises, and the state of the tree care industry.

These are the type's of issues being discussed at TCIA’s Legislative Day on the Hill, coming up this September 18-19, and the event is a dynamic way to make your voice heard for the tree care industry. By attending, you will participate in educational briefings covering key policy issues, receive advocacy training, and gain valuable insights into legislative advancements and best practices.

The 2024 agenda will focus on key issues such as:

OSHA Tree Care Operations Rulemaking: Advocating for a separate OSHA standard for arborists.
Immigration Reform: Pushing for reforms to the TPS and H-2B visa programs to address workforce shortages.
Implementation of the Inflation Reduction Act (IRA): Ensuring TCIA members benefit from funding for urban and community forestry projects.

Back in the 90s, Kevin Green was an arborist in small town America frustrated with the amount of down time resulting from having to replace broken or dull teeth in the field. He knew there had to be a better way. He shared his frustrations with a friend, and together an idea was formed. What if you could turn or replace a tooth in the field without having to remove the pocket? Using scrap metal, the two men shaped a shank & attached a round carbide tip to the end. They formed pockets from steel plate, fitted the pocket onto the stump grinder & bolted the teeth into the pockets.

There are almost 8,000 national trade associations in the United States, but only one represents the interests of the tree care industry. TCIA’s mission is to “advance tree care businesses.” One of the primary ways to protect and advance the industry is through attempts to influence public policy in a direction favorable to our members, which is why we would like to invite you this September 18-19 to join us for our Legislative Day on the Hill in Washington, DC!

The Day on the Hill involves briefings on the issues of importance for your business, followed by a day of meetings with Senators, Representatives, and their staff. We may also have meetings with executive branch officials. TCIA will make your appointments for you and you will be part of a larger delegation visiting offices. Tree care companies are adopting electric vehicles due to economic and environmental incentives. Funding from the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law, Inflation Reduction Act, and tax credits like the clean-vehicle tax credit help offset costs. Additional savings come from accelerated depreciation options. Financing options include loans, EV leasing, and government-backed guarantees. Combining tax benefits and various funding sources helps manage the high upfront costs and meet emission regulations efficiently.

We would like to congratulate TCIA's very own Peter Gerstenberger, SVP, Industry Support, for receiving the Honorary Life Membership award at the ISA Annual International Conference! The award is granted to members of ISA who have contributed materially and substantially to the progress of arboriculture and have given unselfishly in their efforts to support arboriculture.

The ISA Awards of Distinction, presented by Bartlett Tree Experts, are the highest honors given by ISA based on nominations submitted by members and industry professionals. Nominations are reviewed by the ISA Awards Committee, and the committee submits a roster of recommended award recipients to the ISA Board of Directors for approval. The ISA Awards of Distinction recipients are announced at the ISA Annual International Conference.

Before and after the site visit, the group spent significant time providing updates on their goals for FY24 and sharing issues they're experiencing to receive feedback and advice from their peers.

Group members include Dan Mello (Seacoast Tree Care), Stacy Hughes (Hughes Tree Service), Hutch Reed (Arborlogical), Robert Hendricksen (Hendricksen Tree Care), Josh Guin (Oak Bros Tree Care & Removal), Dan Ostvig (Ostvig Tree), Trumbull Barrett (Barrett Tree Service East), and Robert Brudenell (The Natural Way).

Around 1910, Asa Augustus Fanno bought an orchard. A.A Fanno had to prune the trees every season to generate fruit growth – and he got tired of climbing into the tree and using ineffective equipment. So, after some trial and error, he created the industry’s first pole saw with a curved blade. The blade’s curve allowed the user to maximize the cutting effectiveness of the downward stroke, or pull, of the tool.

We would love to have you join us for our Legislative Day on the Hill!

Through grassroots efforts in the states and through direct action by TCIA’s lobbyists, staff, and members, your industry’s trade association works to promote the interests of commercial and utility arboriculture.

Our lobbying efforts aim to ensure that policymakers understand the complexities involved in running a safe, professional tree care company. Our goal is to limit burdensome laws and regulations while promoting programs that help tree care companies succeed.

The Day on the Hill involves briefings on the issues of importance for your business, followed by a day of meetings with Senators, Representatives, and their staff. Specific interest in hearing why tree care is so dangerous, OSHAs enforcement approach and conflicting regs that make it difficult for the industry to operate without their own standard.
