From there, Mr. Brown went to Carson-Newman College in Jefferson City, Tennessee. He graduated from there in 1956 with a B.A. in History. He went on to seek further study at University of Georgia, receiving a M.Ed. Degree in 1966 and an Ed.S. Degree in 1970.

Mr. Brown's teaching experience includes teaching eighth grade math at Marietta High and Park Street Schools from 1956-1963; Principal of Waterman Street School from 1963-1969; and, of course, Principal of West Side Elementary from 1969 to 1991.

Our thoughts and prayers go out to Mr. Brownโ€™s family, and to with the thousands of students and educators he positively impacted during his life and tenure as the West Side principal.

Mr. Brownโ€™s legacy lives on today in many ways, including the origination of our school mascot, the gymnasium and music building, the Polk Street marquee, and the belief that all students will be loved, nurtured, and provided an excellent education when they walk through the doors of West Side.

โ€œBe the best bee you can be.โ€

Marietta mourns the loss of a cherished and beloved member of our community. Rupert Raines passed away the morning of August 5, 2024 at the age of 86. He was a graduate of Marietta High School and was married to Beverly Sanders. He served in the Marietta Police Department rising to the rank of Assistant Chief. As a young police officer, he was injured in the gas explosion at Athertonโ€™s Drug Store on Marietta Square that occurred on Halloween night in 1963.

He was very involved with the Methodist Youth Fellowship at Marietta First Methodist Church. Rupert and his wife Beverly had an open door policy for young teenagers. They had bulletin boards in their home full of MHS class photos.

Later on, Rupert served as bailiff in Cobb County Superior Court for Judge Adele Grubbs and Judge Kim Childs. He served as bailiff for 19 years. Last year he was inducted into the Marietta City Schools Athletic Hall of Fame as a contributor. Rupert was present for many athletic endeavors at Marietta High School, especially football and basketball games. Years ago, he would es**rt the football team to away games.

His celebration of life will be held on August 9, 2024 at Marietta First United Methodist Church. The family visitation at 1:00 in the parlor, the service will be at 2 oโ€™clock. Followed by a reception in the family life hall at 3 oโ€™clock.
