“The LORD is near the brokenhearted; he saves those crushed in spirit.” (Psalm 34:18)
When our kids are afraid, we can be quick to try and comfort them. From turning on a light in the dark to providing a hug and stuffed animal after a nightmare, we want to help. As adults though, we may feel like there is no one to help or comfort us when we are afraid. But the truth is, God cares when we feel afraid. More than that, He invites us to turn to Him, ask Him for help, and trust Him in the middle of our fears. Whatever fears you may be struggling with today, know that God loves you, cares for you, and wants to lead you to hope and comfort in Him.
“The LORD is near the brokenhearted.” Psalm 34:18a
Our lives are full of ups and downs. Even preschoolers cannot escape the hurt of feeling alone, afraid, sad, and mad. This month's Theme verse reminds us that even when we feel hurt, God cares about us, and He is always near when we need Him. Take a few minutes to thank God for the way He is near to us when we hurt. Pray that your preschoolers will experience God’s love and care when they hurt too.
Take 1 day this week to ask these 2 questions and spend 3 minutes talking about them:
When is a time you felt afraid? What is something you can do to remember that God cares when you feel afraid?
Take 1 day this week to ask these 2 questions and spend 3 minutes talking about them: When you’re feeling afraid, what makes you feel better? What do you know about God that can help you when you feel afraid?

We got to Dive Deep this week as we taught kids that God cares when we feel afraid. In Psalm 23, a man named David wrote a song about how God loves and cares for us like a shepherd cares for his sheep. When we are afraid, we can trust that God is with us. He leads us, guides us, and loves us. Do a “Trust Walk” with your kids, inviting them to close their eyes as you lead them by the hand around your home. Talk about how we can trust that God is always with us, even when we are afraid.
This week preschoolers learned that God cares when they feel afraid. In our Bible story, Elijah was scared of Queen Jezebel, and he ran away and hid. God knew where Elijah was and met him and talked to him. Even though he was scared, God reminded Elijah how He always cares for us. Pray that your preschoolers will remember God is with them, and He cares when they are afraid.
As a family, think about people in your extended family, church, or neighborhood who may feel alone. Work together to make a special card for one of these people or families. Draw pictures, write a note, and include a treat! Deliver the card and treat to them. Remind them that they are not alone, and that God cares for them.
Give everyone in your family a few stickers. Spend a day trying to sneak stickers onto each other’s backs. At the end of the day, see who got “stickered” the most! Talk about how you may not have noticed when someone was putting a sticker on you! This can help you remember that, even when you feel alone, God is always with you, and He cares for you.
Take 1 day this week to ask these 2 questions and spend 3 minutes talking about them: What is the difference between being alone and feeling alone? How can thinking about God help you when you are feeling alone?
Take 1 day this week to ask these 2 questions and spend 3 minutes talking about them:
Has there ever been a time when you felt alone? What are some things we can do as a family to remember that God cares when we feel alone?
This week preschoolers learned that God is with them when they feel alone. In our Bible story from Daniel 6, Daniel continued to obey God and pray to Him even though the king had issued a new law ordering people to only pray to him for 30 days. When the king found out, Daniel was put in a pit with lions. Even when Daniel was with the lions, he wasn’t alone—God was with him, and God comforted him. God cared about Daniel when he felt alone. God cares when we hurt, too, and He is always with us when we feel alone. This week remind your preschoolers about how God is with them when they feel alone.
This week in Dive Deep, we learned from Psalms 25 and 40 that God cares when we feel alone. In our broken world, we can feel alone and wonder about who we can count on. But feeling alone and being alone are two different things. We can remember that God is always with us, and we can count on Him when we are feeling alone. As a family, have a “Quiet Afternoon” where you go about your activities for an hour without talking. Then talk about how comforting it is to know that even when things felt quiet, you were all comfortable and confident because you knew you weren’t alone.
We hope you have an amazing day celebrating the 4th of July with family and friends! We are so blessed and thankful to live in a country where we can worship and serve our Heavenly Father freely.
This July our theme is Dive Deep, and we are teaching the Simple Truth, “I Am Broken.” Brokenness is all around us, and we are going to learn from different Psalms about how God cares when we feel alone, afraid, sad, and angry. So join us at church this month as we get ready to dive deep!
Hey, Piedmont family! This month in Piedmont Kids, our Simple Truth is, “God Cares When I Hurt,” and our theme is Ups and Downs! We want your preschoolers to know and remember that there are times in life when they will hurt, but the good news is that God cares when they hurt because He loves them. Preschoolers will learn that God cares when they feel alone, afraid, sad, and mad.
God made me special! Hooray! We loved learning how God made us special and one of a kind. As we wrap up our One of a Kind series, we can remember that we are all special to God. God has a special place for each of us—to be a part of His family. Hooray! That is something to celebrate! Take time today to talk about what it means to be children of God.
We had a great time this Game Changer week celebrating that God made us special. Our Bible story from
1 John 2–3 taught that when we trust and believe in Jesus, we become God’s children We are a part of God’s family! Ask your kids what they think a “perfect” family would look like. Then, talk about how God loves them so much; He made a way for them to be a part of His family—and it’s the best family ever!
Our Remarkable Bible story in Piedmont Kids came from Exodus 20 and Mark 12:28-34. God gave Moses, the leader of the Israelites, 10 special rules about relationships to share with His people. Later, Jesus summarized those commands into 2—love God with everything and love others as yourself. God uniquely designed us and knows just what we need to have a relationship with Him and with others. This week, talk with your kids every day about one thing you can do to love God and one thing you can do to love others. Watch and see what God will do!
This week preschoolers learned that God made us for relationship. In our Bible story, we learned that God gave us rules to help us know how to have a relationship with Him and with other people. These rules in the Bible help us know how to be a better friend. What are some important relationships you have in your life? How can you share God's love in these relationships?
Take time today to pray as a family—talk and listen to God. Pray these 4 things:
1. Thank God for the friendships in your life.
2. Ask God to help you remember that you were made for relationship with Him and with other people.
3. Pray that your relationship with God would grow deeper.
4. Choose one or two other people to pray for—that they would be open to hearing how to have a friendship with Jesus and say yes to following Him.
