It’s that time of the year when we raise awareness regarding the importance of microchipping, which greatly helps in reuniting missing pets with their owners. Ten million pets are lost annually. Microchipping provides peace of mind. If your pet isn't microchipped, please call us to discuss.

All pet owners must be aware that warmer months mean their pets have different needs, and if overheating occurs, they risk a serious medical complication. collapse, seizure, coma, brain damage, heatstroke, and death may occur.

Overheating In Pets Can Be Avoided In The Following Ways:

Provide your pet with fresh water and shade when outside for any length of time Invest in innovative cooling products designed especially for pets, such as cooling mats and vests.
Avoid leaving your pet in the car, regardless of access to fresh air with windows cracked.
Slowly acclimate your pets to hot weather by bringing them outside in short increments, working your way up to more extended periods outside.
Avoid too much exercise or playing outside during hot months.
Groom your dog more frequently and consider shorter hair in the summer months, as a dog’s coat serves as insulation and makes them more vulnerable to overheating.
Make sure your home is air-conditioned, or fans are set up for pets if you work outside the home.
Be especially vigilant with senior pets, pets with respiratory issues, and brachycephalic (flat-faced) dogs since their shortened muzzles mean their airways are less efficient.
Keep your pets off of asphalt surfaces, as they radiate heat and will make your pet’s temperature rise even more rapidly.

FYI: What do you get when you cross a turtle with a porcupine?

Thank you to all those who give dogs a second chance to become a dog beyond the shelter walls.
7 Benefits to Rescuing a dog:
#1: Existing training - they are used to living in a family setting and could already be house-trained, crate-trained, or have experience riding in cars
#2: Shelter dogs are eager to please - they don’t just love you for being their person, they love you for giving their life stability.
#3: You are saving more than one life - you also open up a spot for another pet by adopting
#4: It can be cheaper - fees usually includes a spay or neuter, all required vaccinations, and microchipping. This means you’ll be able to safely get straight to cuddling and socializing your dog
#5: Any breed you like - many shelter dogs are the results of uncommon breeding pairs, which could result in a mixed-breed dog with a unique appearance
#6: Important information - the staff at shelters spend time with each pet that comes through their program; this means you can get insight into a dog’s personality before you adopt them
#7: Your health will benefit from it - playing with and petting your new four-legged family members gives both of you an elevated level of serotonin – meaning lower levels of stress

April is National Heartworm Awareness Month. Pets infected with heartworm can develop damage to their blood vessels, lungs and heart. Symptoms include coughing, difficulty breathing, decreased ability to exercise and weakness. Severe infections can result in heart failure or death. Heartworm affects an animal’s health and quality of life long after the heartworms are gone. The Charlotte area has a high incidence of heartworm. If your pet is not up to date on their heartworm prevention, please call us to schedule an appointment to speak to someone to go over your options. 704-841-2225. If you are a new client to Plantation Animal Clinic, please mention that and your first wellness exam visit fee is only $35 (other charges may apply). Www.plantationah.com
