The Wolf River Conservancy is pleased to see the historic RAISE grant funding awarded to the City of Memphis and the Wolf River Greenway project. This investment into areas of persistent poverty brings together transportation, recreation, and public safety improvements that will provide quality-of-life benefits for generations to come. We thank Representative Cohen and the Department of Transportation for their continued commitment to improving the lives of Memphians, and we look forward to breaking ground on these new phases of the Wolf River Greenway as soon as possible.

Join us as we welcome BOYCE UPHOLT on TUESDAY, JUNE 25 at 6:00 PM to celebrate the release of THE GREAT RIVER: THE MAKING AND UNMAKING OF THE MISSISSIPPI.

ABOUT THE BOOK:

Over thousands of years, the Mississippi watershed was home to millions of Indigenous people who regarded “the great river” with awe and respect, adorning its banks with astonishing spiritual earthworks. But European settlers and American pioneers had a different vision: the river was a foe to conquer. In this landmark work of natural history, Boyce Upholt tells the epic story of human attempts to own and contain the Mississippi River, from Thomas Jefferson’s expansionist land hunger through today’s era of environmental concern. He reveals how an ambitious and sometimes contentious program of engineering—government-built levees, jetties, dikes, and dams—has not only damaged once-vibrant ecosystems, but may not work much longer, and explores how scientists are scrambling to restore what’s been lost. Rich and powerful, The Great River delivers a startling account of what happens when we try to fight against nature instead of acknowledging and embracing its power.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR:

Boyce Upholt is a journalist and essayist whose writing has appeared in the Atlantic, National Geographic, the Oxford American, and Virginia Quarterly Review, among other publications, and was awarded the 2019 James Beard Award for investigative journalism. He publishes the Substack Southlands and lives in New Orleans.

Excellent video by our friends and partners over at TennGreen Land Conservancy!

PROTECTING TENNESSEE WETLANDS with Wolf River Conservancy: Every May, we celebrate American Wetlands Month, and this year’s has been a special one. Through a fruitful partnership, Wolf River Conservancy and TennGreen Land Conservancy have protected two additional critical areas: Lagrange Point and Pleasant Farm. Both are direct connections to the Wolf River and critical to the recharging of the Memphis Sand Aquifer—the grand feature West Tennesseans rely on for their drinking water.
Lagrange Point was made possible through the concern and cooperation of the adjacent neighborhood’s developer, who worked directly with Wolf River Conservancy and TennGreen to protect these 121 acres. The developer could have expanded onto these floodplains and wetlands, but followed through on the conscious, critical effort not to.
The second project, Pleasant Farm, adds 118 acres to over 1,800 acres of protected land within the Wolf River Wildlife Management Area (WMA), which was also generously funded by the Heritage Conservation Trust Fund and the North American Wetlands Conservation Act (NAWCA).
Like Lagrange Point, it ranks in the top 1% of critical areas in need of conservation by Wolf River Conservancy, is within the Memphis aquifer’s recharge zone, and falls within the critical areas TennGreen strives to protect in Tennessee.
“It is vitally important to protect spaces like this, not only for wildlife and creek and surface water quality, but for the drinking water in the aquifer below. What I really want to see is the continuing expansion of protection out from the Wolf River. Suburban development from East Memphis and Collierville, etc., is coming this way. So, we need to make sure that there is a solid buffer of aquifer recharge wetlands that is completely protected.”
– Ryan Hall, Director of Land Conservation, WRC
The alternative—as the latest data shows—is a West Tennessee void of clean water. Yet as these latest projects show, there is hope. Hope for our drinking water, our critical wildlife, and our priceless recreation.
For more information on these projects, be sure to watch the full video.
And thank you, again, from all

Our Land Stewardship Associate, Dylan Moreau, wading through the wetlands near the Wolf River on a conservation easement in Mississippi surrounded by Arrow arum Peltandra virginica.
This wetland plant is native across the southeast. It grows best in soils that are wet to submerged, and in full sun to part shade. It has large arrow-shaped leaves that can grow up to four feet tall. It is deciduous in most climates, but evergreen in the south. Yellow spathe flowers mature in the summer and attract pollinators. This plant provides cover for fish, and is a common plant for dragonflies and damselflies to lay eggs.

We want to give a huge shout-out to all the amazing folks who joined us for our unforgettable Mother's Day paddle last Sunday! We paddled along a picturesque three-and-a-half-mile stretch of the Wolf River, flanked by the Shelby Farms trails and the Wolf River Greenway Trail.

Ann, one of the winners of a free paddle drawing during our Last Drink a Beer Save a River, shared her heartwarming experience, paddling with her mom!

"My mom and I had a great time on the Mother's Day Paddle with the Wolf River Conservancy. Everyone was so nice and helpful. With probably a handful of paddling experience between the two of us, this was a perfect section for beginners. It is so amazing to have the Wolf River in the middle of the city, and I encourage everyone to try out a paddle with this group!"

The joy from our Mother's Day paddle truly warmed our hearts, and we can't wait for more incredible adventures with all of you!

🦅We are delighted to report that an active Bald Eagle nest has been observed on protected Wolf River Conservancy property near the Wolf River in Shelby County. We are not revealing the precise location to safeguard both birds and people from harm. It will suffice to say the eagles have chosen a spot which is difficult for people to access on private land near the Wolf River.

Not so long ago, Bald Eagles were absent from the Wolf River watershed, their numbers decimated by the effects of the pesticide DDT, hunting, and habitat loss.

The Bald Eagle, once near extinction, has made a remarkable recovery thanks to conservation efforts. Significant milestones such as the banning of DDT and the passage of the Clean Water Act and Endangered Species Act have contributed to their comeback. By 2007, the Bald Eagle was removed from the Federal Endangered Species List. In Tennessee, efforts by the TWRA and volunteers have led to the resurgence of the Bald Eagle, with an estimated population of 300-500 birds and 143 to 175 active nests. The Wolf River Conservancy has played a key role in protecting wetland habitats for Bald Eagles and other species.
