On display this month in Barret, we celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month!
Hispanic Heritage Month is observed annually from September 15th-October 15th and recognizes the achievements of Hispanics everywhere.

Why September 15? It is recognized as the independence day of five Latin American countries: Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras and Nicaragua. Mexico celebrates its anniversary of independence on September 16th and Chile on September 18th.

Be sure to visit the display on the main floor of the library and for more information, scan the QR code for the Hispanic/Latinx American Heritage LibGuide - a great source of information about art, cuisine, media, Memphis Connects, music, dance and MORE!

A little Banned Books Week terminology:

From the American Library Association:
“A challenge is an attempt to remove or restrict materials, based upon the objections of a person or group. A banning is the removal of those materials.

Challenges do not simply involve a person expressing a point of view; rather, they are an attempt to remove material from the curriculum or library, thereby restricting the access of others.

Due to the commitment of librarians, teachers, parents, students and other concerned citizens, most challenges are unsuccessful and most materials are retained in the school curriculum or library collection.”

Yesterday was the Barret Senior Luncheon for the graduating students who have worked for the library and IT!

We had a fun time, sharing memories of our years together and future plans over a delicious meal.

One of the library’s other time-honored traditions is to chose a book for each student based on what they studied during their time at Rhodes. The book is added to the library’s collection with a bookplate dedicating it to the graduate so that they will always remain a part of the library. 📚

Can you guess which book was dedicated to each student? 🧐

We can’t thank our student coworkers enough for their dedication during their time here and for letting us be part of their college experience.

Congratulations to the Class of 2024! ♥️🖤♥️🖤

Charlaine has also written many short stories, and together with Toni L.P. Kelner she edited seven themed anthologies. Her books have sold over 39 million copies worldwide!

Charlaine details how being a Rhodes alum has impacted her, shares stories from her time here and gives young writers her insight on the field and craft.

On Lynx to the Past, Kahlila Bandele continues to explore the history of international students on campus. On this episode, Maggie and Kahlila discuss the relationship between Chinese students in the 1950s and American Cold War politics.

One of these students was David Wen-Wei Chang, class of 1955. While researching this episode, we learned that Dr. Chang had published an autobiography titled “The Scholar and the Tiger”. We recently added this book to our collection if you would like to read more about Chang’s life.

This photo of David with students Meredith Bollinger and Joan Stewart ran in the April 11, 1953 edition of The Sou’wester- 71 years ago today!

Are you excited to view the eclipse today? Take a stroll over to FJ to join the Rhodes community for the event.

In 1963, the Southwestern physics department faculty and students went on an expedition to Alaska to view the total solar eclipse.
Logistics for the expedition were mind-boggling. Large and fragile pieces of scientific equipment were transported from Rhodes College (Southwestern at Memphis) to Gulkana, Alaska (3,663 miles)
Much of the equipment was made or retrofitted from WWII surplus materials. The equipment for the expedition was flown to Seattle from Memphis and then placed on a barge for transport to the research site in Alaska.

Dr. Peyton Rhodes (namesake of the college), then president of Southwestern at Memphis, was part of the group of physics faculty and students.

While you are at FJ today for the eclipse, take a moment to note the sundial on the south wall of Rhodes Tower and listen to the episode of the Lynx to the Past podcast “Time on the Tower” which features former physics professor Dr. Jack Streete, a noted eclipse chaser.

Pictured in the group shot:
Front: Charles Robertson, Charles Brandon, Bill Boyd, Jack Aldridge, Shannon Ball,
Rear: Jack Streete, Robert MacQueen, Keith Watson, (High Altitude Observatory), G.P. Ruffin, Jack H. Taylor, Peyton N. Rhodes, A.C. Emery, Richard Grojean (Northwestern University)

Happy New Year! 🎊 🐉 🧧

The Lunar New Year is a major holiday celebrated in many parts of Asia and in Asian communities around the world. It marks the beginning of the year using the traditional Chinese lunisolar calendar. Typically, Lunar New Year is observed in late January or early February of the Gregorian calendar. The Year of the Dragon begins today, Saturday February 10. The only mythical creature in the Chinese zodiac, the dragon has long been associated with prosperity and power.

The origins of the Lunar New Year festival are thousands of years old and are steeped in legends. One legend is that of a hideous beast called Nian who was believed to feast on human flesh on New Year’s day. Because Nian feared the colour red, loud noises, and fire, red paper decorations were pasted to doors, lanterns were burned all night, and firecrackers were lit to frighten the beast away.

Approximately 10 days before the beginning of the new lunar year, houses are thoroughly cleaned to remove any bad luck that might be lingering inside. Traditionally, New Year’s eve and New Year’s day are reserved for family celebrations, including religious ceremonies honoring ancestors. Also on New Year’s day, family members receive red envelopes (lai see) containing small amounts of money. Dances and fireworks are prevalent throughout the holidays, culminating in the Lantern Festival, which is celebrated on the last day of the New Year’s celebrations. On this night colorful lanterns light up the houses, and delicious traditional foods are served.

In honor of the Year of the Dragon, here are some dragons in art that can be found in our special collections. 🐉

Barret Library’s exhibit hall presents “Celebrate African-American History”.
The library invites the community to visit the exhibit which highlights African-American tourist attractions, events, and literature from the past and present.

Be sure to explore the section on African-American Travel! In the past, African American travelers faced significant challenges. The “Green Book” was created by Victor H. Green in 1936 as a crucial resource for providing information on safe places to stay, eat, and visit as well as tips on navigating areas where racial tensions were high.

For modern travelers, be sure to scan the collection of QR codes that highlight some of the best historical collections in the US.
