Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated® remains at the forefront of social justice to promote fairness and equity.  To commemorate Juneteenth, Phi Lambda Omega Chapter partnered with NAACP Memphis Branch, Shelby County Voter Alliance, and New Sardis MB Church to send postcards with personalized notes to eligible voters in the Memphis community encouraging them to vote.  Additionally, we partnered with the Juneteenth Dream Summit to register voters.

We will continue to Advocate for Social Justice and increase voter engagement through Voter Education, Voter Registration, and Voter Mobilization to ensure that our communities are fully empowered! ✊🏽🖤

06/19/2024

Juneteenth honors the date that 250,000 enslaved Texans learned their freedom had been secured by the Emancipation Proclamation— two and a half years after it was signed. We invite you to join us in commemorating and celebrating Juneteenth because it allows us the opportunity to teach all Americans OUR history and celebrate African American culture.

Here are some simple things you can do to commemorate Juneteenth that align with our sorority's International Program Initiatives:

️🖤 Empower Our Families: Share the history of Juneteenth and your family history with the youth in your family.

🖤 Build Our Economic Wealth: Support and promote a black owned business in your community or online.

🖤 Enhance Our Environment: Plant a sustainable garden in an urban community and/or support a local farmer selling fruits and vegetables.

🖤 Advocate for Social Justice: Engage in meaningful dialogue with others about race, privilege, and the ongoing fight for civil rights in our country.

🖤 Uplift Our Local Community: Attend a local Juneteenth celebration in your community with family and friends.

May this Juneteenth be a celebration of freedom, resilience, and unity. Let us honor the past, acknowledge the present, and work together for a future where equality and justice prevail.

Pretty Girls Plant! 🩷💚🌿🌱
Thanks to our friends at the Memphis Botanic Garden for giving us the opportunity to be the first organization to host tours of The Jim Strickland Youth Education and Tropical Plant House. We learned about the various plants, how they benefit our environment, and got our hands dirty making terrariums with some of the plants we saw on the Tropical Plant House tour.🌺🌴
