What's going on around the Transgender world and community? WeCareTN checked in with a few other organizations, podcasters, and boss women. Hear how they're making an impact in the transgender community.

12/06/2023

2023 has been a year for transgender rights.

"Statehouses around the country this year have been consumed by fights over laws governing transgender people.

Seventeen states during their most recent legislative sessions passed restrictions on medical care for transgender people, joining just three other states that passed similar bans in the last two years. A series of other laws passed regulate which bathrooms transgender people can use and whether schools can affirm transgender children’s identities.

Already many of these laws are being challenged in court, and judges are scrutinizing their precise wording. A federal judge in Arkansas last week struck down that state’s law forbidding medical treatments for children and teenagers seeking gender transitions. Earlier this month, a Florida judge sided with families seeking to block the state’s law banning gender transition care for minors, saying that the ban is likely to be found to be unconstitutional.

Many of the bills denied certain medical care to transgender people, while others targeted bathroom use and preferred personal pronouns. Amid the fighting, it’s easy to overlook the text of the laws themselves, which can get clinical very quickly." - The New York Times

"Harm reduction is a practical and transformative approach that incorporates community-driven public health strategies — including prevention, risk reduction, and health promotion — to empower people who use drugs (and their families) with the choice to live healthy, self-directed, and purpose-filled lives. Harm reduction centers the lived and living experience of people who use drugs, especially those in underserved communities, in these strategies and the practices that flow from them.

Harm reduction emphasizes engaging directly with people who use drugs to prevent overdose and infectious disease transmission; improve physical, mental, and social wellbeing; and offer low barrier options for accessing health care services, including substance use and mental health disorder treatment.

Harm reduction is an important part of the Biden-Harris Administration’s comprehensive approach to addressing substance use disorders through prevention, treatment, and recovery — and empowering people to reach their own goals, through incremental change.

Harm reduction works by addressing broader health and social issues through improved policies, programs, and practices." - Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration

"To mark the pivotal impact communities have had in shaping the HIV response, as well as global health at large, the theme of World AIDS Day 2023 is ‘Let communities lead’.

World AIDS Day is an opportunity to reflect on the progress made to date, raise awareness about the challenges that remain to achieve the goals of ending AIDS by 2030 and mobilize all stakeholders to jointly redouble efforts to ensure the success of the HIV response." - World Health Organization (WHO)

11/30/2023

Tomorrow, December 1 is World AIDS Day.

"World AIDS Day arrives at a defining moment. AIDS-related deaths have fallen by almost 70 per cent since their peak in 2004, and new HIV infections are at the lowest point since the 1980s. But AIDS still takes a life every minute. We can — and must — end AIDS as a public health threat by 2030. Reaching this goal means heeding this year’s theme: Let Communities Lead.

The path to ending AIDS runs through communities. From connecting people to the treatment, services and support they need — to the grassroots activism pushing for action so all people can realize their right to health. Supporting those on the frontlines of the battle against AIDS is how we win. That means placing community leadership at the centre of HIV plans, programmes, budgets and monitoring efforts." - UNAIDS

The SCHD Ryan White Program, ViiV Healthcare, and community partner Friends for All are proud to welcome George M. Johnson as a special guest speaker at this year’s World AIDS Day event at the Cadre Building at 149 Monroe Avenue, Memphis, TN 38103. The program also features a catered dinner buffet, vendors, and giveaways, and will culminate with a balloon release to honor everyone in our community impacted by HIV/AIDS. Free parking will be provided at One Commerce Square Parking Garage at 61 S. Second Street, Memphis, TN 38103.
