About Mick Kolassa: “Michissippi Mick” Kolassa currently lives in Michigan, where he was born, but for over 30 years he lived in Mississippi and Memphis, where he was given his nickname. He has played blues in solo and duo acoustic formats and with his bands for years. Mick has performed in legendary blues venues such as Ground Zero, The Rum Boogie Café, Biscuits and Blues, Martha’s Midway Tavern, The Bradfordville Blues Club, Darwin’s, Blind Willie’s, Underground 119, The Capitol Oyster Bar, the National Blues Museum, and many more. He has also performed at multiple blues festivals in North America and Europe.

Each of Mick’s albums has received significant airplay and radio chart positions and they all included different styles of blues. Rather than staying within a single genre of blues, Mick loves and celebrates all styles of blues, and also loves to find the blues hidden in songs of other genres, “bluesifying” songs and doing what he calls “uncovers”. Mick can offer 4 different “flavors” of blues to an audience:

His solo acoustic shows feature Delta and Piedmont blues, as well as some surprise folk blues tune.
With his Endless Blues Band Mick delivers modern Mississippi, Memphis and Chicago Blues, with a taste of Rock
For a different feel, Mick teams up with Memphis guitarist Mario Monterosso Mario to deliver classic “old school” blues with a jazz influence in the styles of T-Bone Walker, Louis Jordan and Lowell Fulson.
Mick also delivers a soulful blues show flavored with a bit of rock by teaming up with Mississippi Bluesman Dexter Allen.
Regardless of the venue and configuration, Mick delivers lively and animated performances, assuring that the fans enjoy themselves as they listen to him playing his Free-Range Blues©.

Friday evening, July 05, 2024, 7-9pm, CDT (U.S.) the Radio-Memphis Friday Night Special is honored to have Kent Burnside live in the studio with host Ric Chetter! Kent will talk about his music, and perform live throughout the show!

About: Kent Burnside was born into the blues. Kent Burnside was born in 1971 in Memphis Tennessee, and spent his early years in Holly Springs, Mississippi. He is the oldest Grandson and one of the closest pupils of the legendary R.L. Burnside
Kent first heard the blues while watching his grandfather R.L. perform on the family farm to the locals. Kent used to sell sandwiches to audience members for a dollar a piece during these performances.

The first lesson RL taught Kent was that to be a bluesman you have to find your own rhythm on the guitar. You can't play someone else's rhythm - as rhythm comes from your heart.
It started with Buddy Guy. Kent got his real start in the music business playing with Jimbo Mathus (Fat Possum Records) and going on tour with Buddy Guy in the early 2000's. That was when he started developing his signature style of blues: dark, hypnotic, inviting and very danceable.

Kent performed for Samuel L. Jackson to help Jackson prepare for his role in Black Snake Moan (2007). He has also worked on The Blues Brothers' stage shows with Dan Aykroyd. Aykroyd is a huge fan and supporter of Kent's work.

Bruce Willis once played harmonica at a jam with Kent Burnside. Kent has spent decades performing at festivals and has toured all over the world. Most recently in 2019 he performed at the Blues Rules Festival in Switzerland, and played a two-week tour of Australia with The New Savages. Kent Burnside regularly performs at Festivals around the US with The Flood Brothers.

ABOUT: Eric Deaton is a torch-bearer of the North Mississippi Hill Country Blues tradition, having received an apprenticeship first-hand from the masters of this particularly hypnotic, backwoods strain of blues. With his band, the Eric Deaton Trio, he brings forth influences from his electric juke joint upbringing, interpreted with dashes of psychedelic funk, East Indian sitar drones, and a nod to the blues' West African roots.
Early Years and Influences:

Eric Deaton was born and raised in North Carolina. In 1989, he got his first guitar at age 13 and studied for several years under Carolina guitar guru Audley Freed.

In 1994, Eric moved from North Carolina to Mississippi straight out of high school and entered a higher education program of moonshine-fueled hill country blues at the world-renowned Junior Kimbrough's juke joint in the mid to late '90's, playing bass or guitar with trance-blues masters Junior Kimbrough and R.L. Burnside (and various other members of their extended families).
Touring and Recording Accolades:

Eric first toured the country as a member of the Fat Possum Juke Joint Caravan, backing up T-Model Ford and Paul 'Wine' Jones. In the years since, Eric has toured or recorded with such luminaries as Jimbo Mathus, Afrissippi, Shannon McNally, Alvin "Youngblood" Hart, Reverend John Wilkins, and Dan Auerbach.

Tab Benoit Embarks On His 2024 Night Train Tour
Performs Locally: RAILGARTEN IN MEMPHIS - Wed., March 6

(Memphis TN) - Acclaimed Louisiana Bayou blues guitarist Tab Benoit kicks off his epic 2024 Night Train Tour with a local performance at Railgarten, 2166 Central Ave., Wednesday, March 6. Show: 8pm. Tickets: $20. Info: (901) 504-4342 or visit www.railgarten.com. Also performing: JD Simo.

Tab Benoit Live! - Reviews:

"The final song of the night was “Night Train” from 2005’s Fever on the Bayou which Benoit jammed on for over ten minutes with explosive guitar licks. It was a bring-down-the-house conclusion
BLUES ROCK R***E

"Tab Benoit has been a frequent Lincoln visitor over the three-plus decades that he brought his brand of blues out of Louisiana. Known for his distinctive guitar tone and fiery playing, he’s a powerhouse vocalist who sounds something like Otis Redding."
LINCOLN JOURNAL-STAR

"On April 12th, 2023, blues fans filled the Intimate Tennessee venue of Hop Springs to experience the legendary Tab Benoit’s live performance...As soon as Benoit took the stage, the audience erupted in applause, ready to be taken on a soulful journey through the sounds of the Delta Blues." MY GLOBAL MIND

"Based on how early the capacity crowd filled The Coach House in San Juan Capistrano on a Thursday night, the world still loves a great guitar hero. The good news for concertgoers who came to the legendary venue last night was they got to see two guitar masters (Tab Benoit and JD Simo) on the same bill." ROCK 'N' ROLL TRUTH

"Benoit took the stage, and within ten minutes the rain slowed to a drizzle, then stopped completely. Blues From The Top 1, Mother Nature 0...From his set opening “Why Are People Like That” to his encore “Medicine”, Benoit had the delighted crowd swinging, singing, and swaying. Benoit’s set was the perfect culmination of three fabulous days of extraordinary music at an extraordinary venue in an idyllic location" DENVER ENTERTAINMENT HUB

"Louisiana blues great Tab Benoit hit The Warehouse and was welcomed with open arms by his adoring fans, and he didn't disappoint!, . "His 'swamp blues' was right at home on this very sticky and hazy evening, done right by a legend in the making." POWERPLAY ROCK & METAL MAGAZINE

The Memphis Blues Society congratulates Fuzzy Jeffries & The Kings of Memphis (band), Jason Freeman (solo/duo act), and Rising Stars Fife & Drum (Best Self-Produced CD) for representing the Memphis Blues Society at the 2024 International Blues Challenge this week!
It takes a lot of time, talent, and dedication to be a part of the annual IBC. Very few Blues musicians achieve this privilege!
The MBS is most proud of these musicians, their talent, and the professionalism they possess and convey in their performances!
Please take time to congratulate each!
