Good morning. Today Anna Daly tells readers about a 153-year-old Idaho church.: A 153-year-old building near Boise dates back to times before Idaho was even a state.

Our Lady, Queen of Heaven Catholic Church sits in Oreana, Idaho in Owyhee County.

Built in 1883, it was originally built to be the town’s first general store and post office.

“Our Lady, Queen of Heaven Church stands at a section corner where a saloon, school, hotel, and general store clustered to form the early Owyhee County community of Oreana,” the National Register of Historic Places statement of significance notes.

The store, which is made of stone, was paid for by the town of Oreana’s founder – cattleman Michael Hyde. The store had several owners up until 1961 when then-owner Albert Black donated the building to the Catholic Church. At that time, it needed a lot of updates, including a roof.

“The general store—remodeled into Our Lady, Queen of Heaven Church—is the only remaining building from this early group,” the statement of significance notes. “The church and storage building are architecturally significant as an excellent example of early localized masonry construction efforts.”

Volunteers from Nampa and other Southwestern Idaho towns worked together with Father Merzbach of Nampa to renovate the building.

“Although the renovation added a belfry, buttresses, and a new porch, the exterior stone appearance is retained,” the statement of significance notes. “The community effort demonstrated the value of the building as a local landmark.”

In 1980, the building was listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

Today, Catholic Mass continues to be held in the old building one Saturday each month at 10 am.

Idaho made wine before its PNW neighbors. Inside the state’s growing industry 🍇

Anna Daly writes: When thinking of ‘wine country,’ Idaho might not be the first place that comes to mind. But winemaking in Idaho has deep roots – dating back to the mid-1800s before grapes were planted in Oregon or Washington.

Today, more than 70 wineries and 8 cideries have over 1,300 acres of planted vineyards in Idaho.

“Thanks to their talents, Idaho is no longer an ‘up-and-coming’ wine growing destination,” the Idaho Wine Commission notes on its website. “We’re prime time, baby. And the best is yet to come.”

While Idaho is considered by many to be a newer wine-growing state, the first grapes in the state were grown in Lewiston in 1864 and Idaho became home to the first wineries in the Pacific Northwest. From 1865 to 1919, Idaho had a booming wine industry.

“Before any grapes were ever planted in Washington or Oregon, they were planted here in Idaho by immigrants—Louis Desol and Robert Schleicher from France, and Jacob Schaefer from Germany,” the commission’s website notes. “They were winning awards around the country before Prohibition took a debilitating toll on the industry and brought production to an absolute halt.”

Then in 1970, 45 years after Idaho repealed prohibition, grapes were planted in the southern part of the state in the Snake River Valley in Canyon County. It wasn’t until 2007 that the Snake River Valley became Idaho’s first American Viticultural Area (AVA).

“We have an incredibly unique growing region within the Snake River Valley, specifically in Sunny Slope where agricultural food production is feeding people around the world,” SCORIA Vitner Sydney Nederend said. “It should be no surprise that we produce award-winning wines out here.”

The Eagle Foothills and Lewis-Clark Valley are Idaho’s two other AVAs – federally designated wine grape-growing regions in the United States. The Snake River AVA is where most of Idaho’s wineries are located today.

“The Snake River Valley AVA covers more than 8,000 square miles and has a near-famous latitude for growing grapes, comparable to regions from around the world,” the commission’s website notes. “Its immense size is a great advantage, allowing for tremendous room to grow. In other words, there’s room for everyone here.”

Idaho also has a total of six wine-growing regions (the three AVAs are located within them) including the Coeur d’Alene & Sandpoint, Lewiston & Moscow, Western Treasure Valley & Sunnyslope, Eagle, Boise and Garden City, and South Central regions.
