As we look forward to a new academic year starting at DSHA, we are reflecting with gratitude on the thirteen years World Languages Faculty José Hurtado Pérez has served at the school. Since starting at DSHA in 2011, Hurtado Pérez has made a lasting impact on Dashers. In the spring semester issue of The Word Magazine, Hurtado Pérez reminisced on his time at DSHA, what he will miss the most, what he is looking forward to in retirement, and more.

Just last week, girls in rising grades 6-9 were storming the pitch to learn the basics of rugby from long-time Head Varsity Rugby A-Side Coach John “Chin” Klein during DSHA Summer Cool. Last spring, Klein led the Varsity A-Side team to secure another Midwest Championship title and the national-runner up trophy in the Single School National Invitational Championship. In his decades of coaching, he has led the Dashers to ten national championship titles. DSHA Alumnae—do you have a favorite Dash-A-Thon memory?! At the end of the 2023-24 school year, students were asked to submit their favorite photos and this Dash-A-Thon photo was submitted by Payton Josetti, DSHA ‘26. The “Swimming into the School Year” theme perfectly fit the rainy weather of the day on their 7 mile walk! The girls exceeded their $90,000 goal by raising $91,889 for the school that they love as the largest student-led fundraiser of the year.

“I love this photo because it shows how proud we were after the completion of the rainy walk! The photo means a lot to me because it was my second year being part of SPRIDE [an elected commission of DSHA Student Council] and helping plan Dash-A-Thon. It was surreal to complete the walk after months of endless planning.”

Last week at Summer Cool, girls in rising grades 4-6 rolled up their sleeves to make their own pudding parfaits in Cooks and Books. In this camp, students learn how recipes are written, how to create their own in handmade cookbooks, and how to make tasty treats.

“It’s been really fun to get to know the students here and to see them experiment. I want them to learn that it’s OK to make mistakes so that you can learn and grow. Baking is great practice for that!”

Last week, Summer Cool campers in rising grades 4-6 learned how they can make a positive impact in their communities in Service Dasher Style. In addition to organizing an end-of-week bake sale, food drive, and clothing donation day, these girls also learned how they can continue acts of service after camp — the same way Dashers perform service all year long. Kinship Community Food Center also made a visit and shared how kids under 14 can help alongside their families at the organization’s food center.
