We have been so blessed with abundance from Good Shepherd. Our shelves now are filled with enough hygiene items to share with all of our community members. Thank you so much to Good Shepherd Catholic Church for your support this Lent!
Even though we will not have baskets on the altar during offertory this weekend, you can still bring Lenten almsgiving donations for the Jim Luther New Hope Center to the display in narthex when you come for Palm Sunday Mass. Thank you for your overwhelming generosity of our Good Shepherd Lenten Almsgiving Project!

Lentils are considered a staple in Indian cuisine, used to make a variety of delicious and flavorful foods like curry, soups, and other dishes that pair nicely with rice.
If you’re not familiar with cooking this type of cuisine it can seem intimidating… but actually many recipes are easy, simple, and above all delicious! If you have lentils in your pantry, try out this recipe! it will take less than 30 minutes and keep you full all day.
All these ingredients are often choices we have available at our pantry, so be on the lookout for these ingredients if shopping with us!
Dal Tadka
Ingredients:
- 1 cup lentils
- 2 cups water or broth
- 2 tbsp turmeric powder (optional)
- ½ onion sliced into half circles
- ½ can of crushed tomatoes(can use diced tomatoes)
- A little cooking oil
- 2 tbsp cumin (crushed or seeds)
- 1 Hot pepper chopped (optionally can use a bell pepper for flavor)
- Salt (to taste)
You'll also need a frying pan and a pot for cooking the materials.
Recipe-
Place all the lentils and water/broth into a pot and turn up the heat until its boiling. Add the turmeric (optional) and let it simmer on a low heat for 20 minutes, or until the lentils have absorbed most of the water and are soft.
While the lentils are cooking, you can make the flavorful sauce. Use a frying pan, put in some cooking oil, and wait for the pan to heat up. Once it’s hot, put the chopped pepper in the pan for 10 seconds. The peppers only need to be fried for a short period of time.
Throw the chopped onions and cumin into the pan with the peppers and cook for about 4 minutes on medium heat until the onions begin to turn brown. After that, put ½ a can of crushed or diced tomatoes into the pan and let that simmer for 30 seconds. Stir frequently to mix the sauce together. Then the sauce is complete!
Once the lentils are cooked, pour the flavored sauce into the pot with the cooked lentils. Stir it together and put salt into the dish to what level you'd like. Salt is an important component of this dish, because it brings out the flavors that are in this dish.
Once you've stirred it all together, it's ready to eat! You can eat it with some cooked rice, bread, or on its own.

The best part about cooking is that you can add as much spice and seasoning as you like, so get creative! You can also double the recipe to make more food for later!
If you’re don’t have some of the spices, you can often find them at the store for cheap, or you can check out this list of substitute spices: https://swirlsofflavor.com/substitutions-for-turmeric/
