On Friday September 27th, Nick Winton Jr. will deliver the poignant narrative of the dire circumstances faced by families before WWII and how the rescue mission led by Sir Nicholas Winton, a London stockbroker, transformed countless lives. The impact of the story is heightened by the fact that the rescuer, often dubbed “The British Schindler,” is his father. Today, it’s believed that over 5,000 individuals owe their lives to his heroic deeds.

Today, September 16th, is Mildred Fish-Harnack Day.
Mildred Fish-Harnack, born in Milwaukee 122 years ago, moved to Germany after marrying Arvid Harnack. As the N**i Party came to power, Mildred and Arvid resisted. They helped to get persecuted Jews out of Germany, published underground newsletters, and fed information to the Allies. In 1942, their communications to the Allies were intercepted, and Mildred was captured. She became the only female American civilian to be executed on the direct order of Hi**er. Her last words were, “And I have loved Germany so much.” Today, and every day, we remember and honor Mildred and her legacy.
Included are images from Jewish Museum Milwaukee's 2011 special exhibit, Mildred Fish Harnack: The Story of a Wisconsin Woman's Resistance and a photograph of Mildred.

The Nathan and Esther Pelz Holocaust Education Resource Center presents "Remembrance of Things Present" a theater performance by The Braid on September 22nd at 4:00pm at The Ivy.
The story of the Holocaust continues far past liberation. These stories of the descendants of survivors, once kept secret, are now brought to life in a work of searing but ultimately inspirational theatre. Remembrance of Things Present, a Salon Theatre production from The Braid, the Go-to Jewish story Company, comes at a time of rising antisemitism. This curated collection of true stories, brought to life by professional actors, offers heroism, healing, and hope at a moment when they are sorely needed.

A History Lover's Guide to Milwaukee by by James Nelsen (2021) is an excellent resource for both locals and visitors.
Milwaukee is often described as a “big small town,” and its quirky character stems from its many neighborhoods–each with its own stories to tell. Early territorial disputes, for example, led to the horribly (or humorously) misaligned streets of downtown. The city’s signature rectangular pizza was born in the Third Ward.
In Kilbourntown, Teddy Roosevelt was saved from an assassin’s bullet by the smallest of items. Not far from that spot, eight baseball team owners formed the American League of Professional Baseball Clubs. And no matter the neighborhood, a fantastic glass of suds is never far away in this renowned beer city.

TITLE: Against the Grain: The Remarkable Life of Artist Bernard Perlin.
DESCRIPTION: Bernard Perlin was a minority, outsider, gay man, and pursuer of truth, beauty, and justice. Born to Russian Jewish immigrants in 1918, artist-activist Perlin was a talented painter, illustrator, war artist-correspondent, and photographer, who tackled stylistic genres, the horrors of WWII, issues of social justice, and homosexuality with conviction and bravery. Throughout his long, richly varied, well-traveled career, Perlin moved from Social Realism to Magical Realism and worked with the WPA (Works Progress Administration), OWI (Office of War Information), and Life and Fortune magazines among countless others. His art has been collected by major institutions including the Smithsonian American Art Museum, Museum of Modern Art, Whitney Museum of American Art, Art Institute of Chicago, Pritzker Military Museum & Library, and the Tate. This exhibit celebrates and brings deserved visibility to an artist who lived passionately and unapologetically against the grain. It explores the benefits and challenges of multi-faceted identities, immigration, and assimilation. Additionally, it delves into historical experiences of persecution and discrimination against minority groups that reflect similar attitudes that are still prevalent today.
DATES: This exhibit is on display from September 27th, 2024 until January 26th, 2025.
